Al Capp was an American cartoonist best known for the satirical comic strip Li'l Abner. The popularity of his comic strip and his controversial personality gave him an unprecedented amount of celebrity status for a cartoonist of his time. He worked on Li'l Abner for 43 years from 1934 to 1977. According to M. Thomas Inge, Capp's stories featuring hillbillies living in the fictional Southern town of Dogpatch "had a profound influence on the way the world viewed the American South."
