Héctor Oesterheld

Héctor Germán Oesterheld is best known for his authorship of The Eternaut. In Latin America, it’s considered both a groundbreaking work of science ction and a comics masterpiece. An Argentine journalist, he collaborated with the best artists of his time, including Hugo Pratt, Alberto Breccia, and Francisco Solano López. He also created the characters Sergeant Kirk, Bull Rocket, Ernie Pike, Sherlock Time, and Mort Cinder. Oesterheld’s work became increasingly politicized in the 1960s and 1970s: his 1968 graphic Che Guevara biography was banned and the printing plates destroyed. In 1977, the military government arrested him—along with his four daughters (two of whom were pregnant at the time). There is no information about what happened to them, but they are all presumed dead.
