André Franquin was born in 1924 in Etterbeek, Belgium. After taking over Spirou magazine's title character in 1946, he introduced a number of popular supporting characters including the Marsupilami. He also created the gag strips Gaston Lagaffe and, for Tintin magazine, Modeste et Pompon. Franquin died in 1997.
