Murder by High Tide
Another never-before-translated classic from the Golden Age of Franco-Belgian
comics, finally brought to American readers. Imagine the beautifully crisp
images of Hergé (Tintin) put in service of a series of wise-cracking, fast-paced
detective stories — punctuated with scenes of spectacular vehicular mayhem
(including in this volume a dockside pursuit via car and bulldozer) — and
you’ll see why 50 years later Gil Jordan is still considered a masterpiece in
Gil Jordan is a nattily-dressed but tough-as-nails private eye, seconded by
his trusty ex-burglar assistant Crackerjack and his eccentric friend Inspector
Crouton (as well as the invaluable Miss Midge).
Fantagraphics’ first Gil Jordan book combines two of Gil’s finest yarns in
one splendid hardcover. In “Murder by High Tide,” Gil and his associates are
hired to investigate the suspicious disappearance (death?) of an antiques dealer,
while in “Leap of Faith” they get involved in trying to protect an attorney
from Joe the Needle, a mysteriously escaped convict with apparent superhuman
powers who has sworn vengeance.
Read Kim Thompson's informative Editor's Notes for the book!
"[Murder by High Tide is] excellent,
...showing off the strengths of the Eurocomics tradition,
with its sprawling narratives spread across small panels,
mixing cartoony characters and elaborate backgrounds."
– Noel Murray, The A.V. Club
"[Murder by High Tide is] a ton of fun
and the full-color art, beautifully produced and fairly bursting with sweat beads, stink lines, and other
emanata, is an animated delight."
– Keir Graff, Booklist
"...[T]hese insouciant, stylish, and thrilling dramas should appeal to readers of all ages. If they don't hook a whole new batch of bande dessinée fans, France needs to take back the Statue of Liberty in a huff.... If Spielberg is looking for a second franchise after Tintin, he couldn't go wrong with Gil Jordan." – Paul Di Filippo, The Barnes & Noble Review
"...Tillieux's plotting and deft hand at action, figures, and environments make Murder by High Tide a thrilling read." – Garrett Martin, Paste

Fantagraphics is proud to follow up 2010’s inaugural edition of Maurice
Tillieux's classic early-1960s Gil Jordan adventures Murder by High Tide with a
new double dip.
"Ten Thousand Years in Hell" marks a sharp departure from the moody,
urban detective thrillers of Jordan's previous adventures: Instead, after a feint
in that direction, it turns into a rollicking, comedic South American prison escape
yarn as Jordan and his assistant Crackerjack, who have followed a
case all the way to the banana republic of Xique-Xique, end up in dire straits
indeed. The second story, "Boom and Bust," finds the duo's countryside
jaunt turned into an ad hoc investigation by a spectacular vehicular washout
(Tillieux did love destroying cars) and a suspiciously noisy
enclosure. And in both adventure the eccentric but lovable
Inspector Crouton eventually becomes part of the story,
reuniting the wisecracking trio.
Even sporting a more free-wheeling, humorous style,
Tillieux's masterful graphics remind the reader why he was
considered one of the top Franco-Belgian cartoonists of the
time — indeed, any time.
