Robert Pollard in Group Art Show in Phoenix, AZ!
Written by janice headley | Filed under Robert Pollardeventsart shows 23 Apr 2014 9:13 AM

We're thrilled to see Robert Pollard is still at it!

We don't mean his band, Guided By Voices -- the indie rock veteran released seven albums just last year, and have at least five new releases planned for 2014... No, we're thrilled to see that among touring and recording, he's still making his gorgeous collage-based artwork, as featured in our 2008 collection Town of Mirrors: The Reassembled Imagery of Robert Pollard!

A few of his pieces are being featured in the exhibit, Chimerical, now on view at the Modified Arts gallery in Phoenix, Arizona -- this group art show is on view through May 10th, with a closing reception on Friday, May 2nd, from 6:00 to 10:00 PM.

Modified Arts is located at 407 E. Roosevelt St. in Phoenix, AZ.

- This just in! The New York Public Library's Dorothy and Lewis B. Cullman Center for Scholars and Writers has picked its sixteenth class of Fellows: fifteen extraordinarily talented independent scholars, academics, and creative writers whose work will benefit directly from access to the collections at the Stephen A. Schwarzman Building. Chosen from a pool of 288 applicants from 24 countries, the 2014 class of Cullman Center Fellows Dash Shaw will be the David Ferriero Fellow. While at the Cullman Center he will work on a graphic novel about a Quaker during the American Civil War.

"I am tremendously proud to welcome the Cullman Center's new class of Fellows to The New York Public Library," said NYPL President Tony Marx. "The Cullman Center offers these talented individuals access to our world-renowned collections within an environment that inspires and supports their exciting work. I congratulate the new Fellows and look forward to seeing the unique and creative ways they engage with our collections."

The 2014 class of Fellows will be in residence at the Cullman Center from September 2014 through May 2015. Each Fellow receives a stipend, a private office in the Cullman Center's handsome quarters at The New York Public Library's landmark Stephen A. Schwarzman Building at Fifth Avenue and 42nd Street and full access to the incomparable research collections and online resources there, as well as the invaluable assistance of the Library's curatorial and reference staff.

We look forward to seeing the results of Shaw's work and wish him a whole lotta luck!

Unlovable Vols. 1-3 Gift Set
Price: $68.98 $55.18

Summer vacation is here and Tammy Pierce is back with more sometimes ordinary, often humiliating, occasionally poignant, and usually hilarious exploits! Her hopes, dreams, agonies, and defeats are brought to vivid, comedic life by Watson's lovingly grotesque drawings, filled with all the eighties essentials — too much mascara, leg warmers with heels, and huge hair, etc. — as well as timeless teen concerns like acne, dandruff, and the opposite sex (or same sex, in some cases). Unlovable addresses the mysteries of high school through Tammy's naivete; girls and women in particular will find much that resonates, but men will also relate to Unlovable's universal humor and loser cast of characters. Tammy's life isn’t pretty, but it is endlessly endearing and hilarious.

"There are certain things about my family Mom always preferred to keep hush hush."

The suppression of family history and the cumulative effects of these secrets are the initial threads that tie together this masterful graphic novel from Jaime Hernandez. Much like John Updike in his four Rabbit novels, Hernandez has been following his longtime heroine, Maggie Chascarillo, for several decades, all of which has seemed to build towards The Love Bunglers.
