Based on a 1920s Austrian novella by Stefan Zweig, this story is a reaction to the politics of the time. Stefan Zweig was a humanist and after seeing what became of his beloved Europe when the Nazis took over he eventually committed suicide in Brazil in 1942 when he couldn't bear it any longer.
