Fidus was the pen name of the German illustrator and painter Hugo Reinhold Karl Johann Höppener (1868 - 1948). A prominent Symbolist, Fidus drew posters, decorations, and illustrations, through his career growing more mystical and abstract. He was drawn to pagan and mythological themes; forgotten at his death, his work was revived in the 1960s, when it inspired the psychedelic poster movement. This drawing refers to the ancient May Day advent of St Walpurga, associated with witches, bonfires, and Spring Rites in Nordic lands. (“Opfer” means “victim.”)
