"The loose, stream-of-consciousness narrative showcases Mattotti’s flowing, delicate black-and-white art and the endlessly imaginative settings. His world is developed with clarity, originality, and a touch of poetry.” — Publishers Weekly
“Garlandia's art is so virtuosic, so gorgeously replete, it almost doesn't matter what the book is about. Its inexorable momentum is entirely visual. Things like character motivations and plotting merely provide a frail scaffolding for page after page of billowing, ecstatic linework.” — NPR Books

The gars are carefree animals living in harmony alongside all kinds of wondrous creatures in their Edenic home of Garlandia. Their shaman, Zachariah, interprets the spirits that foretell their future, but when a strange vision bodes ill, a repellant but charismatic newcomer arrives and plays upon the gars’ fears, endangering their halcyon existence. To save his homeland, the shaman’s well-intentioned son, Hippolytes, must leave his wife, Cochineal, and their newborn cub and embark on a perilous odyssey. This sweeping epic takes our unlikely hero to dangerous, faraway lands where he encounters a host of mythical creatures and strange characters.
Garlandia is the newest collaboration between master cartoonist Lorenzo Mattotti, whose stunningly realized pen and ink drawings paint a vivid, phantasmagorical portrait of Garlandia, and Jerry Kramsky, who has written a graphic poem of mythic scope and surprising political relevance.
