Summer Vacation
(Image: Summer Vacation 1999 © 1988 Argo Pictures)

A student has committed suicide at a boys-only boarding school leaving only an enigmatic note behing. During the summer vacation of 1999, only three students remain and one day, a boy who looks exactly like the dead student shows up...

Starting this week, the Japan Society in NYC is hosting a film series titled A Tribute to Donald Richie, Part 2: Richie's Electric Eight: The Bold & The Daring. On Thursday, March 13th at 7pm the opening night film is SUMMER VACATION 1999 better known to you as The Heart of Thomas! The 1988 film adaptation of Moto Hagio's seminal manga is a must-see especially since they made the decision to cast young girls (14 to 15 years old) in the roles of the young men the books is based on. After the film is a yaoi party, so feel free to dress up like the students in The Heart of Thomas & Summer Vacation 1999 while dancing to a live performance by the high-energy glam jazz pop band Ideal Orkestra.

Ideal

"This profoundly romantic, beautifully realized independent production is one of the most original Japanese films of the year....One watches these young people, so young that a degree of androgyny is expected, and it is as though one is watching adolescence for the first time." –Donald Richie "New Japanese Cinema" report to Japan Society, 1988

Buy tickets here! Now! $15 for adults, $12 for Japan Society members, sassy seniors and students.

Fantagraphics at the 2014 Asbury Park Comicon!
Written by janice headley | Filed under Peter BaggeMiss Lasko-GrossHarvey KurtzmaneventsCharles ForsmanBob Fingerman 11 Mar 2014 9:39 AM

Yo, Jersey! Several Fantagraphics artists will be guests of honor at the 2014 Asbury Park Comicon on Saturday, April 12th and Sunday, April 13th!

This year's special guests include Peter Bagge, Bob Fingerman, Charles Forsman, and Miss Lasko-Gross, among many others, but these are clearly the best.

Not only can you get your books signed by these folks, but you can also catch some panels throughout the weekend, particularly on Saturday, on the lower level of the Berkeley Oceanfront Hotel. Such as:

Saturday

•  1:00 PM // The World of Harvey Kurtzman: Denis Kitchen on the life and art of the incredible Harvey Kurtzman, creator of Mad magazine, Little Annie Fannie, Frontline Combat, Help Magazine and much more.

•  4:00 PM // The Neat Stuff in Mind of Peter Bagge: Funny book creator Peter Bagge in conversation with Jon B. Cooke.

There's some other panels, but y'know, those are clearly the best.

And, just when you think it can't get better: performing at the Comicon After-Party on Saturday night, it's The Julie Ruin, a project from Kathleen Hanna, former lead singer of Bikini Kill and Le Tigre! Holy crap!

The Asbury Park Comicon runs from 10 AM to 6 PM each day at the Berkeley Oceanfront Hotel, located at 1401 Ocean Blvd. Visit their website for travel help, including the tip: "Have some self-respect -- don't take the bus."

The Amateurs by Conor Stechschulte - First Look
Written by Mike Baehr | Filed under Conor StechschulteComing Attractions 10 Mar 2014 3:53 PM

The Amateurs cover photo

The Amateurs pages photo

A beautiful little book about god-awful occurrences, Conor Stechschulte's debut The Amateurs has arrived at the office in a bundle of advance copies. Two butchers in rural, pre-industrial America are afflicted with mysterious selective amnesia and an inexplicable dedication to their job; the results are absurd and disastrous, and the story is framed with hints of the supernatural. It would be a comedy of errors if it weren't all so horrifying.

This unsettling, kinetic, and breathtaking graphic novella arrives in stores in May; read an 8-page excerpt and pre-order your copy right here.

M.K. Brown is one of the funniest cartoonists of the last four decades — or ever, take your pick — and her body of work has long been savored by aficionados but never comprehensively collected — until now. Stranger Than Life is the first retrospective of Brown's cartoons and comics from their original appearances in the National Lampoon, Mother Jones, The New Yorker, Playboy, and other magazines and underground comics.

M.K. Brown's comics stories satirize suburban anxiety and post-modern ennui by the sheer force of her gentle but piquant, off-kilter observations, along with her slightly pixilated but winsome characters, all of which are perfectly captured in her restless pen line and delicate jewel-tone watercolors.

In these pages: Read instructions for the use of glue, making a pair of pants, home auto repair, coping with chainsaw massacres, and jackknifing your big rig. "Another True-Life Pretty Face in the Field of Medicine" introduces Virginia Spears Ngodátu, who (with a bit of a name change) would go on to star in "Dr. Janice N!Godatu," Brown's series of animated shorts that appeared on The Tracy Ullman Show alongside the first incarnation of The Simpsons. Plus, enjoy aliens, old people, pilgrims, mermen, monitor lizards, tiny floating muggers and other weirdos in Brown's side-splitting single-panel gag strips.

The Amazing Art of Jim Flora Exhibit in Connecticut!
Written by janice headley | Filed under Jim Floraeventsart shows 10 Mar 2014 9:39 AM

In celebration of what would've been Jim Flora's 100th birthday, the Rowayton Arts Center in Rowayton, CT, presents the exhibit The Amazing Art of Jim Flora.

This wonderful show is truly a family affair: it's curated by Jim's son, Joel Flora, and both Jim and his wife, Jane, were founding members of the RAC, and active members until their deaths (she in 1985; he in 1998).

About a dozen large pieces that represent just a fraction of Flora's long career will be displayed in the Portside Gallery.

Of his father's work, Joel Flora says, “My father had a wonderfully open and fertile imagination and I admired how he could access this store of fantastic images at will.”

The Rowayton Arts Center is located at 145 Rowayton Avenue. This wonderful exhibit will be on display through through March 29th. Can't make it to Connecticut this month? Feast your eyes on our collections of Flora's vibrant work, including our most recent collection, The High Fidelity Art of Jim Flora!

Yes yes, y'all! Acclaimed young cartoonist Ed Piskor (Wizzywig) schools you on the old school in this essential, explosively entertaining, encyclopedic cultural chronicle of an American art form that changed the world. Hip Hop Family Tree (originally serialized online at Boing Boing) takes you from the parks and rec rooms of the South Bronx to the night clubs, recording studios and radio stations where the scene started to boom, in panels bursting with obsessively authentic detail.

The vivid personalities and magnetic performances of early stars like Grandmaster Flash, Afrika Bambaataa, Kurtis Blow, DJ Kool Herc, The Sugarhill Gang, and Funky 4+1 come to life, as do the no-less-charismatic players behind the scenes like Russell Simmons, Sylvia Robinson and Rick Rubin. And graffiti master Fab 5 Freddy meets Debbie Harry, Keith Haring, and Jean-Michel Basquiat as the music and culture begin to penetrate downtown Manhattan and the mainstream at large.

Nijigahara Holograph by Inio Asano

[The Umpteen Millionaire Club is our series which puts forth book club discussion questions for Fantagraphics titles. The Comics Journal interns Keith Barbalato, Lucy Kiester, and Daniel Johnson put together this set of questions. As this is intended for those who have read the book and may contain spoilers, questions can be found behind the jump. - Ed.]

Inio Asano's Nijigahara Holograph cuts back and forth between two timelines, filling in details bit by bit: events ripple throughout a town and take their toll for years to come, resulting in violence and sexual guilt. A foreboding force circulates among a community following a woman's suicide. A group of students put a classmate, Arié, into a coma. As troubled new student Amahiko attempts to make friends at school, his life intertwines with the cycle of assault and death.
