This blood-pumpin', needle-stickin' collection features comics on social politics like racial activism, harassment, prison, black culture, ghetto life, the and the sex trade. It portrays the unpleasant realities of life in the inner city, where opportunities were limited and being on the lowest end of the economic ladder meant that one's vision of the American dream was more about survival than lifestyle choices.

Colwell will be in conversation with author Bob Levin about his journey from cartoonist/painter to radical activist who utilized his craft to pass along a message. The talk starts at 7pm with a book signing to follow.

vispo show

 Thursday, January 22nd

New York, NY - Visual poetry is often description as the intersection of word play and art. But whether you approach the medium as a poet or an artist, the renderings are often moving, playful, and linguistically creative. Because this form of poetry IS visual, there's no better way to experience it than through the latest exhibition at the AC Institute in NYC. The exhibition, titled "The Future is Here Again" will run from January 22nd-Februrary 7th, but this opening night reception will feature music from the alternative chamber music string trio, Speed Bump.

Currated by ACI director, Holly Crawford and The Last Vispo editor Nico Vassilakis, the event will feature dozens of artists and their works that were previously featured in the seminal visual poetry books Coldfront, and The Last Vispo Anthology: Visual Poetry 1998-2008

January Book-A-Day Sale: Celluloid
Written by Sonia Lei | Filed under sales specialsDave McKean 16 Jan 2015 2:00 AM

Celluloid by Dave McKean - CoverStarting with today's Book-A-Day sale title, we'll be starting a new theme: "Inside Your Locker." For the next seven days, delve deep inside Fantagraphics' locker for some sensual, decadent books to brighten your day and stimulate the senses.

Dave McKean dipped his (vastly talented) artistic toe into erotic waters with his graphic novel, Celluloid, a 2011 Fantagraphics release about a woman's discovery of a film projector in an apartment, and the mysterious doorway it opens when the film burns out.

As the artist says: "There are so many comics about violence. I'm not entertained or amused by violence, and I’d rather not have it in my life. Sex, on the other hand, is something the vast majority of us enjoy, yet it rarely seems to be the subject of comics. Pornography is usually bland, repetitive and ugly, and, at most, 'does the job.' I always wanted to make a book that is pornographic, but is also, I hope, beautiful, and mysterious, and engages the mind."

Bringing to bear the astonishing range of illustrative and storytelling skills that have served him so well on his collaborations with Neil Gaiman and his own solo projects, Dave McKean forges into new territory with this unique work of erotica.

For today only, Celluloid is on sale at 35% off!

A thrilling, kinetic bio-epic about Michael "Air" Jordan, the greatest basketball player of all time and most influential athlete in history, from the creator of the acclaimed and best-selling 21: The Story of Roberto Clemente. This tour de force explores Jordan's public successes and private struggles, with the depth of Santiago's passion for his subject shining through on every full-color page.

Jordan became a national celebrity at the age of 19, scoring the winning jump shot in the final seconds of the 1982 NCAA Championship, earning him the moniker "Air." He was drafted by the Chicago Bulls in 1984, a team with a decade-long history of dreadful performances. By 1991, Jordan disproved doubters when he finally led the Bulls to their first NBA championship over Magic Johnson and the L.A. Lakers.

In 1992, Michael Jordan joined the Dream Team, an assembly of 12 legendary NBA players who steamrolled everyone at the Barcelona Olympics and brought the gold back home. Despite taking a season off to try his hand at professional baseball, Jordan still led the Bulls to three consecutive NBA Championships twice.

Despite his success, his life in the limelight and his private life were not without controversies or calamities, and no amount of success or money could shield him from it. But everyone wanted to be like Mike, and Santiago comes closer than anyone to putting you on the parquet floor of the Chicago's United Center in your very own pair of Air Jordans.

Acclaimed cartoonist Dylan Horrocks returns with a long-awaited new graphic novel, the first since his perennial classic, 1998's Hicksville (new edition, VUP 2010).

Cartoonist Sam Zabel hasn't drawn a comic in years. Stuck in a nightmare of creative block and despair, Sam spends his days writing superhero stories for a large American comics publisher and staring at a blank piece of paper, unable to draw a single line. Then one day he finds a mysterious old comic book set on Mars and is suddenly thrown headlong into a wild, fantastic journey through centuries of comics, stories, and imaginary worlds. Accompanied by a young webcomic creator named Alice and an enigmatic schoolgirl with rocket boots and a bag full of comics, Sam goes in search of the Magic Pen, encountering sex-crazed aliens, medieval monks, pirates, pixies and—of course—cartoonists. Funny, erotic, and thoughtful, Sam Zabel and the Magic Pen explores the pleasures, dangers, and moral consequences of fantasy.

His panels are too crowded!"), and bemoan their erratic careers.
