Sam Zabel, a struggling cartoonist with an enormous creative block, hasn't actually drawn a comic in years. His world is reduced to the bare minimum of lifes necessities, and one day he discovers a word that perfectly captures the void he feels: "anhedonia." The absence of pleasure, of joy.

Acclaimed cartoonist Dylan Horrocks is back with this all new, long-awaited graphic novel, titled Sam Zabel and the Magic Pen, and we've got a 15-page downloadable excerpt for your viewing pleasure.

Fantagraphics Bookstore & Gallery, in association with Short Run Comix and Arts Festival, is pleased to present Marathon II, the second annual Short Run art show featuring Tom NeelyEd Piskor, Josh Porcellino, MariNaomiJosh Simmons, and Pam Wishbow. The exhibition and book signing on Friday, November 14 serves as a reception for participants and fans of the lively Short Run comix convention held the following day at Washington Hall in Seattle's Central District.

The exhibition title references the daunting challenge of establishing a viable career in alternative comix. Marathon II showcases a diverse group of gifted artists that defied the odds. John Porcellino is one of the pioneers of the minicomics movement. His primitive King-Cat Comics, which debuted in 1989, document his determination to change perceptions of contemporary cartooning.  Porcellino will present his new graphic novel, The Hospital Suite. Tom Neely similarly struggled to fashion a livable income in self-publishing. His fortunes turned when he began producing Henry & Glenn Forever & Ever, which follows the fictional romance of rock personalities Henry Rollins and Glenn Danzig. This modest minicomic series became a pop culture sensation, and has since been collected into a full-length graphic novel featuring Neely and other independent cartoonists, including fellow Los Angles artist MariNaomi, who will present her new collection Dragon's Breath at the event.

Pittsburg's Ed Piskor collaborated with seminal self-publisher Harvey Pekar on American Splendor and other projects. He current series, Hip Hop Family Tree from Fantagraphics Books, follows early practitioners of the inner city idiom through their rise to international notoriety. Seattle-based artist Josh Simmons also self-published comix prior to his association with Fantagraphics Books. Pam Wishbow represents an emerging artist at the outset of her career.

Don't miss this opportunity to meet exhibiting artists and other participants in the Short Run Comix and Arts Festival on Friday, November 14 from 6:00 to 8:00 PM. Fantagraphics Bookstore is located at 1201 S. Vale Street in the heart of Seattle's historic Georgetown arts community. Open daily 11:30 to 8:00 PM, Sundays until 5:00 PM. Phone 206.658.0110.

piskor wild style

Wednesday, November 12th

Seattle, WA - In conjuction with our favorite video store non-profit, Scarecrow Video, Fantagraphics is pleased to host an in-store screening of the film, Wild Style, with an intro and signing to follow with Hip Hop Family Tree cartoonist, Ed Piskor

Wild Style was first released in 1983 and featured the hottest graffiti artists of the day. Not only that, it captured a perfect snapshot of Hip-Hop culture of New York City in the early '80s. Breakdancing, freestyle, scratching by Grandmaster Flash, and of course some of the most classic and notorious graffiti artists and their work.

And in the 2000's, Ed Piskor has been able to illustrate these moments and more in his New York Times Graphic Bestseller series, Hip Hop Family Tree. Engaging, funny, historical speak to HHFT and Wild Style, making their pairing at Scarecrow Video all the more perfect.

Put down the can of spray paint for a few hours, and join us for a night of art, friends, and a little boom bap. Screening begins at 7 PM!

The time is nigh to get your sea legs so strap on your cutlass and step aboard the good ship Criminal Records this coming Saturday, November 8th. Nefarious outlaw among the waves, Drew Weing will be signing and sketching in copies of his freshly reprinted graphic novel, Set to Sea. This rollicking adventure and ballad follows the life of an aspiring poet (and big lug) as he is shanghaied aboard a ship bound for Hong Kong, changing his notions on the romantic sea life. Weing will also give a small presentation about life under the stars and above the murky depths.
Set to Sea   How to Be Happy
But what's this? The fine and true, Eleanor Davis, has stowed away aboard Criming Records and the penalty for such crimes is signing copies of her NY Times Best Seller, How to Be Happy! This collection of tales twists and turns about all genres with gorgeous full-color dystopians to two color fairy tales.
