Buddy Buys a Dump: The Complete Buddy Bradley Stories from "Hate" Comics Vol. 3
by Peter Bagge

144-page full-color 6" x 9" softcover • $19.99
ISBN: 978-1-60699-745-1

Ships in: April 2014 (subject to change) — Pre-Order Now

He's back! Now in his 30s and married with child, onetime slacker hero Buddy Bradley gets a "real" job, shaves his head, dons an eyepatch, quits his "real" job and buys the local dump — because what better place to raise a toddler? Peter Bagge's iconic character is to alternative comics what Homer Simpson has been to television animation over the past quarter-century: a generation-defining slacker and the greatest comedic character of its form and era. Featuring stories originally published in the comic book series Hate Annual from 2000–2011, as well as an all-new 20-page conclusion to the story arc, this book marks the first new book of Buddy stories since the now-perennial classics Buddy Does Seattle (2005) and Buddy Does Jersey (2007).

Buz Sawyer Vol. 3: Typhoons and Honeymoons by Roy Crane - Video/Photo Slideshow Preview

Buz Sawyer Vol. 3: Typhoons and Honeymoons
by Roy Crane

232-page black & white/color 9.25" x 9.25" hardcover • $39.99
ISBN: 978-1-60699-703-1

Buz Sawyer — adventurer, bon vivant, and former bachelor — can't let a little thing like romance and marriage slow him down. Buz knows that Christy is the only woman for him — brave, beautiful, and able to handle herself when the going gets tough, and just the kind of woman Buz needs when the chips are down — a lover and a fighter.

And indeed, Christy has her mettle tested, because the road to marriage is a rocky one. First, Buz has to survive a hurricane in the Caribbean, a typhoon in the South Seas, and a stone cold killer with a deceptively mild manner and the innocuous-sounding name of Harry Sparrow. As if that weren't enough, Buz gets himself caught in a political hurricane when he gets trapped behind the Iron Curtain just as the Cold War heats up. And if you think Buz and Christy's African honeymoon is a picnic... think again.

All of this is brought vividly and gorgeously to life through Roy Crane's sure-footed writing and stunning storytelling, a rollicking series of adventures filled with knock-out women, brutal assassins, and extremely bad weather.

This volume also includes some of the best Buz Sawyer Sunday strips (starring Buz's pal Rosco Sweeney), in full color!

Stranger Than Life
Stranger Than Life: Cartoons and Comics 1970-2013

by M.K. Brown

248-page black & white/color 8.5" x 11" softcover • $35.00
ISBN: 978-1-60699-708-6

"Brown has a natural feel for the kind of raised-consciousness-twist gags on which so much of the best panel cartooning depends after 1960, but she also has a unique sense of color and pacing and very sweet outlook on what people value and why that makes her longer narratives a joy." -Tom Spurgeon, Comics Reporter

Young Romance 2
Young Romance 2: The Early Simon & Kirby Romance Comics
by Joe Simon & Jack Kirby

200-page full-color 7.75" x 10" hardcover • $29.99
ISBN: 978-1-60699-732-1

"...a testament to our culture's appetite for kitschy, kitschy love. The only surprise is that, somehow, these comics don't feel passé...Sexual attraction, like other forms of danger, is doled out in carefully measured portions. And that's really the secret behind romance comics' continuing retro appeal. Like their very first readers, we crave a paradox: Passion united with control." -Etelka Lehoczky, NPR

Cork High and Bottle Deep by Virgil Partch

Our recent book Vip: The Mad World of Virgil Partch, massive as it is, still only skims the surface of Partch's work. With Cork High and Bottle Deep, coming this summer, we plunge a swizzle stick into the depths of one aspect of his prolific career: boozy cartoons! Nothing amplifies the human comedy more than liquorous libations, and nobody captured mankind's firewater-fueled foibles like Vip. We've bottled the bacchanal up in this classy, minimalist cover worthy of your top shelf. Put it on your tab now and we'll serve it up to you as soon as it's available.

A student has committed suicide at a boys-only boarding school leaving only an enigmatic note behing. During the summer vacation of 1999, only three students remain and one day, a boy who looks exactly like the dead student shows up...

Starting this week, the Japan Society in NYC is hosting a film series titled A Tribute to Donald Richie, Part 2: Richie's Electric Eight: The Bold & The Daring. On Thursday, March 13th at 7pm the opening night film is SUMMER VACATION 1999 better known to you as The Heart of Thomas! The 1988 film adaptation of Moto Hagio's seminal manga is a must-see especially since they made the decision to cast young girls (14 to 15 years old) in the roles of the young men the books is based on. After the film is a yaoi party, so feel free to dress up like the students in The Heart of Thomas & Summer Vacation 1999 while dancing to a live performance by the high-energy glam jazz pop band Ideal Orkestra.

Ideal

"This profoundly romantic, beautifully realized independent production is one of the most original Japanese films of the year....One watches these young people, so young that a degree of androgyny is expected, and it is as though one is watching adolescence for the first time." –Donald Richie "New Japanese Cinema" report to Japan Society, 1988

Buy tickets here! Now! $15 for adults, $12 for Japan Society members, sassy seniors and students.

Fantagraphics at the 2014 Asbury Park Comicon!
Written by janice headley | Filed under Peter BaggeMiss Lasko-GrossHarvey KurtzmaneventsCharles ForsmanBob Fingerman 11 Mar 2014 9:39 AM

Yo, Jersey! Several Fantagraphics artists will be guests of honor at the 2014 Asbury Park Comicon on Saturday, April 12th and Sunday, April 13th!

This year's special guests include Peter Bagge, Bob Fingerman, Charles Forsman, and Miss Lasko-Gross, among many others, but these are clearly the best.

Not only can you get your books signed by these folks, but you can also catch some panels throughout the weekend, particularly on Saturday, on the lower level of the Berkeley Oceanfront Hotel. Such as:

Saturday

•  1:00 PM // The World of Harvey Kurtzman: Denis Kitchen on the life and art of the incredible Harvey Kurtzman, creator of Mad magazine, Little Annie Fannie, Frontline Combat, Help Magazine and much more.

•  4:00 PM // The Neat Stuff in Mind of Peter Bagge: Funny book creator Peter Bagge in conversation with Jon B. Cooke.

There's some other panels, but y'know, those are clearly the best.

And, just when you think it can't get better: performing at the Comicon After-Party on Saturday night, it's The Julie Ruin, a project from Kathleen Hanna, former lead singer of Bikini Kill and Le Tigre! Holy crap!

The Asbury Park Comicon runs from 10 AM to 6 PM each day at the Berkeley Oceanfront Hotel, located at 1401 Ocean Blvd. Visit their website for travel help, including the tip: "Have some self-respect -- don't take the bus."

The Amateurs by Conor Stechschulte - First Look
Written by Mike Baehr | Filed under Conor StechschulteComing Attractions 10 Mar 2014 3:53 PM

The Amateurs cover photo

The Amateurs pages photo

A beautiful little book about god-awful occurrences, Conor Stechschulte's debut The Amateurs has arrived at the office in a bundle of advance copies. Two butchers in rural, pre-industrial America are afflicted with mysterious selective amnesia and an inexplicable dedication to their job; the results are absurd and disastrous, and the story is framed with hints of the supernatural. It would be a comedy of errors if it weren't all so horrifying.

This unsettling, kinetic, and breathtaking graphic novella arrives in stores in May; read an 8-page excerpt and pre-order your copy right here.
