As we mentioned back in March, our own Peter Bagge, Bob Fingerman, Charles Forsman, and Miss Lasko-Gross will be special guests this year!

And we're also happy to share that Miss will be part of a special edition of R. Sikoryak's celebrated Carousel series! Get ready for laughs on Saturday, April 12th at 5:00 PM. Miss will be reading alongside Dean Haspiel, Danny Hellman, Seth Kushner & Christa Cassano, Kriota Willberg, and, of course, host R. Sikoryak!

Carousel will be held in the Berkeley Oceanfront Hotel [ 1401 Ocean Blvd ], in the lower level of the east side (ocean side) of the first floor in Room F. (Hotel staff refer to it as "The Steinbach Room.")

Sam Hill returns in The Mysterious Case
Written by Jen Vaughn | Filed under Rich Tommaso 10 Apr 2014 12:31 PM

Mysterious Case Cover
Our friend and private investigator Sam Hill has returned in The Mysterious Case. This comic by Rich Tommaso follows Sam Hill on a whole new mystery in the city! The year is 1939, where Hill is living in Los Angeles and working as an investigator for the D.A.'s office. On the very cusp of the noir genre in film, Sam finds himself in the middle of a double murder case involving oil industry magnates, con men, crooked cops and a budding movie starlet.

Sam Hill
Tommaso's gentleweaving of the darkest parts of the human mind is not his only talent, he's also our colorist on the Carl Barks' Duck books! Order Sam Hill: The Mysterious Case today from Tommaso's site for $7.95! The character you fell in love with in The Cavalier Mr. Thompson will not disappoint. It is much like Cavalier, but heavier on the crime [read: blood!], The Mysterious Case should satisfy readers interested in pulp fiction and historical fiction alike.

There's a unicorn out there and Uncle Scrooge wants it! So Donald and the boys embark on a perilous quest to an exotic land of mystery and danger. (But if you catch a unicorn, what, exactly, do you do with it?)

Next, how could a simple letter to Santa set off not only a riotous moneybag fight between Donald and Scrooge but a cacophonous battle between dueling steam shovels, too?

Then, Donald takes on an impossible assignment to sell — well, something — to the natives of the North.

The ever-clever Carl Barks surprises and delights with mythical mayhem, frigid fun, and feathered foibles on every page!

Introduction by Jeff Kinney, author of Diary of a Wimpy Kid.

Carl Barks, one of the most brilliant cartoonists of the 20th century, entertained millions around the world with his timeless tales of Donald Duck and Uncle Scrooge. Walt Disney's Donald Duck: Trail of the Unicorn continues Fantagraphics' acclaimed color series that exquisitely re-presents all of Barks's classic Duck stories to a new generation.

As we mentioned back in February, Fantagraphics has not one, but two, books nominated in the Graphic Novel/Comics category of the 34th annual Los Angeles Times Book Prizes!

This Friday, April 11th, the winner will be awarded in a sold out event. Is it corny to say they're already winners to us? 'Cause it's true!

Depending on how things go, you can stop by the Festival of Books on Saturday, April 12th to either congratulate or console Anders Nilsen, who will be in town to participate in the panel "Illustrating the Point: The Art of the Graphic Novel" at noon, alongside fellow artists Mimi Pond, Ben Katchor and Vanessa Davis. The panel will be held in the Seeley G. Mudd. Auditorium, Room 123.

Unlovable Vol. 3 by Esther Pearl Watson - Photoset Preview
Written by Mike Baehr | Filed under previewsnew releasesEsther Pearl Watson 9 Apr 2014 11:12 AM

"Esther's consistently original, hilarious and heart-felt work evokes the travails of puberty with painful accuracy. After perusing Unlovable Vol. 3 we immediately broke out in zits and had clumsy beginner sex." – Megan Mullally and Nick Offerman

"Tammy's enchanting smile and dazzling eyes are a gift of grace from Esther Watson." – Pendleton Ward, creator of Adventure Time

"Unlovable is the great teen comic tragedy of our time!" – Matt Groening

"A modest masterpiece, affecting and funny." – Booklist

“GOOD!!!” – Lynda Barry

Unlovable is why we all want to forget about our high school years, but we just can't help but reliving parts again to feel the pain.” – Eric Nakamura, GIANT ROBOT Co-Founder

"I love Unlovable. Take that, book title. ... It’ll remind you of how stupid you were and also of suburban sadness and realizing that your high school crush will probably never love you back." – Nick Gazin, Vice

"Like a Wimpy Kid older sister but more poignant and painful, this features jagged, unpretty art capturing the diarist’s inner chaos. For Lynda Barry fans craving a new read and professionals seeking an unvarnished glimpse of female adolescence.” – Library Journal's "Graphic Novels for Women’s History Month"
