Destiny City Comics opens in Tacoma
Written by Jen Vaughn | Filed under internsField Tripeventsart 30 Sep 2014 11:55 AM

Destiny Comics
We love all our interns, hell we've hired more than a few like Eric Reynolds, Kristy Valenti and Anna Pederson. But some move on and spread the magic to other parts of the country. Michael Fitzgerald fits into the category as on Wednesday, October 1st, he is opening up a NEW comics store in Tacoma, Washington called Destiny City Comics.

Right next door to King's Books on St. Helens Avenue, Destiny City Comics will offer the latest in comics, acclaimed graphic novels, and works by local creators. On opening day, comics like Thor #1 will be available, a new series by Marvel featuring a female Thor. There will also be a choice collection of graphic novels like Batman: the Long Halloween, the Walking Dead, and Guardians of the Galaxy. Plus, works by local cartoonists like members of the C.L.A.W. (Cartoonist's League of Absurd Washingtonians) and some fabulous Fantagraphics titles.

"King's Books is terribly excited to have a comic book store as a neighbor," says bookstore owner sweet pea Flaherty. "For years we have had both a Graphic Novel Book Club and hosted C.L.A.W., so it's a natural fit for the space. Destiny City Comics will enhance the literary landscape by offering variety of comic art forms that will bring more appreciation for the craft to Tacoma."

To make it easier for customers to enjoy even more books, Destiny City will offer 15% off all graphic novels every day and a subscription service featuring a sliding scale discount. Here's a sneak peak inside the store Michael gave us while setting up)display
Destiny City Comics' opening will include a Halloween ComicFest party on October 25. This event will feature an assortment of free comics, including the popular Afterlife with Archie, Scooby Doo Meets Batman, Marvel Super Heroes Secret Wars, and more.

As a member of the creative enterprise cohort with Spaceworks Tacoma, Fitzgerald evolved the concept of Destiny City Comics from a rough idea to a solid plan and we look forward to seeing it thrive. Destiny City Comics will be open for business Wednesday, October 1. More information about the store can be found at destinycitycomics.com.

Sometimes getting together with friends and family for Thanksgiving isn't all that it's cracked up to be, as Snoopy learns when his brother Spike invites him to spend Thanksgiving in the desert, and things don't quite work out as planned. At least it's a change of pace for Snoopy, who spends most Thanksgivings with the ol' supper dish (and one lonely one at the malt shoppe as Joe Cool). It's also a tense time of year to be a bird who’s afraid of being mistaken for a turkey and roasted, and Woodstock copes with his anxieties in various ways, including by donning a disguise with Snoopy's help. Meanwhile, Peppermint Patty, Marcie, and Franklin all get sick over their Thanksgiving vacation. Snoopy's Thanksgiving is the perfect gift book for anyone whose idea of the holiday is more Charlie Brown than Norman Rockwell.

Arsène Schrauwen by Olivier Schrauwen - Excerpt
Written by Sonia Lei | Filed under previewsOlivier SchrauwenComing Attractions 29 Sep 2014 4:00 PM

Arsène Schrauwen is boarding a boat and sailing across the wide ocean to land in the Belgian Congo, where he is to meet his cousin and help him create a utopia in the jungle wilderness there. In these first few pages of Olivier Schrauwen's surreal biography of his grandfather, Arsène helps rid a fellow passenger of a flying fish that has somehow landed in her quarters, meets a chatty older man with ceaseless advice about life in the colony, and, finally, prepares to disembark by donning new clothes and waiting, hand poised on the door handle of his room, for the entire two hours it takes the boat to reach its port.

You can download the entire 14-page 10 MB excerpt right here, and you can find more info and pre-order the book here for delivery by late November.

Arrrrrrr, ye scallywags. Our office copies of the softcover Set to Sea have washed ashore, and we are thrilled to show them off! For those of you who weren't at SPX to see these in person, here is our first look. In one densely rendered panel: a deep, dark sky with its smattering of stars. In the next, a beautifully detailed closeup of the poet's book, showing the detail of his cracked, sea-worn fingernails.

We're expecting the book out on time for an October delivery, so go ahead—you can pre-order your copy here.

Poster
This weekend, October 4th and 5th, Boston's going to host it's annual indie comics party masquerading as a comics show! The Massachusetts Independent Comics Expo (MICExpo) is being held at University Hall at 1815 Massachusetts Ave. in Cambridge's Porter Square. The event is free, family friendly, and offers a weekend of activities as the Boston area's only show dedicated to independent and alternative comics. Our own Paul Hornschemeier is a special guest and even designed the poster! He'll be on the Atrium level, table 31. MICE even conducted a pre-con interview
with Paul.

Paul is also on a Saturday panel from 1:00 PM - 2:00 PM "MICE special guests Raina Telgemeier, Emily Carroll and Paul Hornschemeier will discuss their processes in turning disparate comics material into published graphic novels. Each of these creators has worked in various formats: webcomics, serialization, anthologies. The panel will look at how the specific themes and qualities of their work come into play as short stories or serialized narratives come together into single books, exploring the definition of the term 'graphic novel.'"

Artists Authors Paul
Saturday, October 4th, 10 am - 6 pm, and Sunday, October 5th, 11 am - 4 pm at Lesley University in Porter Square. Be there! For more information visit the MICE website.
