Since their original publication, Peanuts Sundays have almost always been collected and reprinted in black and white. But many who read Peanuts in their original Sunday papers remain fond of the striking coloring, which makes for a surprisingly different reading experience. These late-1950s strips comprise the first golden age of Peanuts Sundays in one gorgeous, full-color coffee table book. Linus, Charlie Brown, Pig-Pen, Shermy, Violet, Sally, Patty, and Schroeder are all present, but the rising star is undoubtedly Snoopy. Peanuts Every Sunday: 1956-1960 has been scrupulously re-colored to match the original syndicate coloring — allowing readers once again to plunge back into Charles Schulz's marvelous world.

In 1947, the author's grandfather, Arsène, traveled across the ocean to a mysterious, dangerous jungle colony at the behest of his cousin. Together they would build something deemed impossible: a utopia of modernity, in the wilderness — but not before Arsène falls in love with his cousin's wife, Marieke. Whether delirious from love or a fever-inducing jungle virus, Arsène's loosening grip on reality is mirrored by the reader's uncertainty of what is imagined or real by Arsène. This first full-length graphic novel from the critically-acclaimed Olivier Schrauwen is an engrossing, sometimes funny, slightly surreal and often beautiful narrative.

The Stranger Genius Awards TOMORROW
Written by Jen Vaughn | Filed under Gary Grothevents 17 Oct 2014 6:00 PM
Stranger Genius
The time has come, the Seattlelite said, to pick a frickin' Genius! The alt-weekly paper in town, The Stranger, is hosting it's annual Genius awards tomorrow after a few events where the genius nominees show it off. Fantagraphics co-founder and editor Gary Groth is nominated in the literature category alongside comics writer/novelist G. Willow Wilson and poet Shin Yu Pai.

The event tomorrow night is F.R.E.E. but you have to reserve and download tickets. SO join the huge, drunken party for all 15 finalists at the Moore Theatre (tickets here), with the Seattle Rock Orchestra and other live performances, and five of the finalists (one from each category) will go home with $5,000 each, no strings attached. To read more about all the Genius nominees in their categories (film, literature, music, performance, visual art), visit The Stranger articles on it.

NY Times Best Seller: MEGAHEX

MEGAHEX
Congratulations are in order for Simon Hanselmann because his book MEGAHEX just showed up on the New York Times Best Sellers' list sandwiched inbetween Bryan Lee O'Malley and Jules Feiffer. Grab a copy from your local comic shop, bookstore, our online store or your local library. Trade weed for it, do what you have to do to read it because not ONLY is it a best seller but it is almost sold out!

The description is also too perfect in it's simplicity. "Meet Megg. She's a witch and has a black cat named Mogg. She is also depressed and addicted to drugs." This sweeter-than-the-real-thing book has to be seen to be believed but check out what everyone is saying about it.

"...not only do I find Megg, Mogg, Owl et al bloody funny at times in that first half, as the book wore on I found myself becoming more and more absorbed and fascinated by the darkness, the progression of the comedy into misery and despair, handled really well by Hanselmann." - Richard Bruton, Forbidden Planet

"Every page is beautiful. Every joke is funny. Every character is a complete asshole. The book itself is a nice chunky hardcover with some good heft and a cover design that is made to resemble a DVD box set of a TV show." - Nick Gazin, VICE

New South Convention in Austin Needs Help
Written by Jen Vaughn | Filed under art shows 17 Oct 2014 2:10 PM
New South
The beautiful and well-printed Foxing Quarterly is attempting to host a new convention in Austin, Texas, an area nearly bursting to the seems with comic and illustrative talent, called NEW SOUTH. They have a Kickstarter set up with some amazing awards like a Jim Rugg Tote Bag (if you don't like Street Angel, you obviously have no soul). And they need your help to meet the goal in the next day. From Danithan's mouth, "Two years ago I co-founded Foxing Quarterly, a literary & arts magazine based here in Austin, Texas. My goal with Foxing was to spotlight literature and comics within our city and beyond. We've done this through readings, art shows, concerts, book swaps, and even a small-scale literary festival." See below:
Foxing Quarterly
Danithan Mejia is one of the most earnest souls in comics, trying to make something from nothing, whether it is their FQ publication, stickers featuring Steven Weissman and Sam Alden or gorgeous jaw-dropping prints by Eleanor Davis. FQ is hosting a LitCrawl along with the Texas Book Festival next weekend featuring our own Tim Lane, celebrating his new book, The Lonesome Go. FQ is also somewhat tied to local community pillar store Book People, another sign that New South and Foxing Quarterly will not be disappearing anytime soon. See Ben Sears made a great illustration for a shirt.
FQ shirt
Austin has another show called Staple that expanded from one to two days many years ago (I haven't been since 2008 when I spent most of the time talking to a cartoonist who let me know they made more money as an anthropomorphic porn illustrator....) but the spirit behind NEW SOUTH is fervent and would showcase a lot of new talent, despite leaning on well-known Rugg and Box Brown for design. They also want to keep the festival free to the public so more goes to the artists, cartoonists and writers (who also are paying cheaper table fees). So please read their own pitch on the Kickstarter page and help be a part of the New South

Run Like Crazy Run Like Hell by Jacques Tardi - Cover

Jacques Tardi is back with another action-packed, neo-noir graphic novel adaptation of a Jean-Patrick Manchette novel. In Run Like Crazy Run Like Hell, a rich industrialist attempts to fake the kidnapping of his nephew and blame it on the nanny he's recently hired straight out of a psychiatric asylum.

Of course, the plan goes horribly, horribly awry. We've got the final cover design for you to ogle over until the book's debut in January.
