January Book-A-Day Sale: Locas II
Written by Sonia Lei | Filed under sales specialsLove and RocketsJaime Hernandez 22 Jan 2015 3:00 AM

Locas II: Maggie, Hopey & Ray by Jaime Hernandez - CoverToday's Book-A-Day Sale features Eisner award-winning artist Jaime Hernandez in an omnibus collection of stories featuring his main characters, Maggie, Hopey, and Ray. Locas II picks up shortly after Maggie and Hopey’s long-awaited reunion at the end of the first Locas.

Even though her love life remains as chaotic as ever, Hopey takes her first few steps toward responsible adulthood with a real job (as a teacher), while a demoralized, divorced Maggie ends up as the manager of a fleabag apartment building where she continues to wrestle with the demons of her past — most prominently in the stunning centerpiece of the volume, the graphic-novel-length “Maggie” serial, with its stunning, hallucinatory dream finale.

Meanwhile, Ray still carries a major torch for Maggie, but falls in with the “Frogmouth,” the volatile bombshell whose ties to local thugs cause him no small amount of grief.

Of course, Maggie, Hopey, and Ray’s paths continue to intersect in Hernandez’s increasingly complex, intricate, and always vitally realized world.

For today only, pick up a copy of this book, called a "landmark in comics literature" by Publishers Weekly, for 40% off!

Thursday, January 22nd

San Francisco, CA - This blog post may as well be called 'This Thursday in Fanta Events' because your 4th favorite day of the week is stacked with events to tide you over until the weekend comes. Kick it off in San Francisco with the men of Zap Comix as we continue to celebrate the release of The Complete Zap Comix Collection, a physical and emotional undertaking that is beautiful to behold. Join Gary Groth and Ron Turner of Last Gasp as they moderate a dicussion with Zap cartoonists Paul Mavrides, Victor Moscoso, and Robert Williams at City Lights Booksellers beginning at 7 pm. This very-nearly sold out book will be available for purchase and signage at City Lights (just don't try to carry it home in your NPR tote bag.) (More Details)

New York, NY - Humans can be split into two ages; a time where we communicated with pictures, and a time where we communicated with words. The blending of these worlds comes in the form of visual poetry, a fully immersive brain exercise in the conveyance of emotions, ideas, and beauty. The Future is Here Again is an exhibit opening today at AC Institute in NYC, and it will feature dozens of works by noted visual poetry artists whose works had been previously collected in the books Coldfront and The Last Vispo. Niko Vasilakis, editor of The Last Vispo has currated this new exhibit with ACI director, Holly Crawford. To continue this night of magnetic mashups, the alternative chamber music string trio, Speed Bump will be providing mingling music. Festivities begin at 6 pm! (More Details

Washington, D.C. - Obama did a pretty good job delivering his State of the Union address this past week, but he had one glaring oversight, he forgot to talk about how the Massive team will be at Fantom Comics this Thursday from 7-9 pm! The biggest and sexiest gay manga anthology is coming to our nation's capitol to announce their new policy on having a good time, and dropping some knowledge about the men who make gay erotic manga. Addressing their adoring constituents are editors Anne Ishii, Graham Kolbeins, and designer extrodinare Chip Kidd. Pick up one of the hottest books of the season tonight, because it'll be on next years comic citizenship tests. (More Details)

January Book-A-Day Sale: Young Romance 1 and 2
Written by Sonia Lei | Filed under sales specialsJoe SimonJack Kirby 21 Jan 2015 4:00 AM

Young Romance 1 + 2 Gift Set by Joe Simon & Jack Kirby - CoversToday's January Book-A-Day sale features a bundled package of our two definitive books on artists Joe Simon and Jack Kirby's romance comics: Young Romance 1 and Young Romance 2.

Together, Joe Simon and Jack Kirby created such classic two-fisted comic series as Captain America, Boys' Ranch, The Newsboy Legion, and The Boy Commandos. But few people realize that one of their greatest successes — from 1947, when they singlehandedly created the genre, to the end of the 1950s — was... romance comics!

In such best-selling titles as Young Love and Real Western Romances, Simon and Kirby delighted a generation of girls and women (and probably a fair number of boys and men as well) with hundreds of charming and endlessly inventive stories of love and heartbreak.

And, for today only, you can get this lovestruck bundle at 40% off!

Willard Mullin's Casey at the Bat and Other Diamond Tales - Video/Photo Slideshow

Willard Mullin's Casey at the Bat and Other Diamond Tales
by Willard Mullin and Ernest Thayer; introduction by Yogi Berra

52-page two-color 6.25" x 6.25" hardcover • $9.99
ISBN: 978-1-60699-814-4

Ships in: March 2015 (subject to change) — Pre-Order Now

In 1953, in conjunction with the fiftieth anniversary of the World Series, legendary cartoonist Willard Mullin created images illustrating one of America's best-loved poems: Ernest Thayer's "Casey at the Bat." These images were then put on a series of drinking glasses that were given away as premiums at various major and minor league ballparks across America. The first set was issued on April 15, 1954, at the very first home game for the modern day Baltimore Orioles.

The illustrations by Mullin were for years thought to have been lost, but were found at an auction in 2002. They have been meticulously reproduced to create this stunning edition of "Casey at the Bat." This edition will include additional Mullin material like the "Fan's Alphabet" from 1953 and the poems "Iron Horse Lou" and "O Brooklyn, My Brooklyn" from 1947. With a preface by Yogi Berra and an essay on the history of both "Casey" and Mullin's images by noted baseball historian Tim Wiles, this edition of "Casey" is the most authentic ever produced. A keepsake for the ages.

After the teeth-rattling one-two punch of West Coast Blues and Like a Sniper Lining Up His Shot, Jacques Tardi makes a third appointment with ace crime writer Jean-Patrick Manchette for his wildest adaptation yet.

Peter Hartog, a rich industrialist, hires a troubled young woman, Julie, straight out of the psychiatric asylum to which she has been consigned for several years, to work as a nanny for his bratty kid Peter. But Hartog's seemingly altruistic impulse to help rehabilitate a troubled soul hides a darker motive: He plans to stage a fake kidnapping of his son, and use Julie as a scapegoat.

Unfortunately for Hartog, Julie proves infinitely more tough and resourceful than he expected, the kidnapping goes horribly, bloodily wrong, and now Julie and Peter are on the run, pursued both by the police and by Hartog's goons, led by the aging but fantastically dangerous contract killer Thompson — one of Manchette's most unforgettable creations, a golem of Terminator-like tenacity who is barely slowed down by physical punishment that would instantly kill a lesser man (he does not end the book with the same amount of eyes and feet as he started).

As with the other Tardi/Manchette books, Run Like Crazy... is full of moments of pitch-black humor, and a strong current of socio-political satire runs beneath its bleak surface. It's a ride to hell, but a devilishly fun one.

Portraits shot at the right moment are like the fermata on a pitch perfect note. Master photographer and jazz pianist Les McCann was able to catch such moments from the greatest of jazz singers and musicians. YOU now have a chance to meet him! Author and historian Pat Thomas (Listen Whitey! The Sights and Sounds of Black Power 1965-1975) curated the new McCann retrospective: Invitation to Openness: The Jazz & Soul Photography of Les McCann 1960-1980 and will be with McCann at the book release party at Book Soup on Saturday, March 28th. 5pm is when DJ Adam Dorn starts spinning the soulful tunes to images by McCann. Pat Thomas will host a roundtable with McCann and A. Scott Galloway, music journalist and introduction writer.

The new book featuring his photographs comes out at the same time as rerelease of Les McCann's Invitation to Openness album from Omnivore Records. The Invitation To Openness album (originally from Atlantic Records) has "remained a landmark statement in free-form improvisation mixed with soulful grooves, featuring a 26-minute continuous track with expressive instrumentation from the likes of Yusef Lateef, Ralph McDonald, Cornell Dupree, Bernard Purdie, and Alphonse Mouzon." These beautiful photographs still resonate to this day, an un-diminished harmony of beautiful black and white.
