January Book-A-Day Sale: Interiorae
Written by Sonia Lei | Filed under sales specialsGabriella Giandelli 10 Jan 2015 9:15 AM

Interiorae by Gabriella Giandelli - CoverToday's Book-A-Day title comes to us from Italy, and it is described thusly:

"A high-rise apartment building in an unnamed European city. Its inhabitants come and go, meet each other, talk, dream, regret, hope... in short, live. A ghostly, shape-shifting anthropomorphic white rabbit roams from apartment to apartment, surveying and keeping track of all this humanity... and at the end of every night, he floats down to the basement where he delivers his report to the 'great dark one.'"

Yes, it's Gabriella Giandelli's Interiorae, praised both in her native Italy and in the U.S, in Boing Boing's "Best Damn Comics of the Year" survey. And, for today only, you can purchase this moody graphic novel for 40% off its retail price!

Saturday, January 10th

Seattle, WA - Our very own Fantagraphics Bookstore and Gallery is overflowing with events and community this Saturday where we will be opening our newest exhibit, Blacklight: The World of L.B. Cole. Joined by Fantagraphics editor, Mike Catron who will be giving a slide show presentation on the beautifully reprinted covers by L.B. Cole, a master of primary colors. If you thought that was enough for one day, you thought wrong. French artist collective Le Cagibi brings with them an engaging, entertaining, and FREE workshop that delves into the process of screenprinting. Their inventive techniqes on printing and binding have made them an important fountain of information for anyone looking to DIY their own work. All the festivities begin at 6 PM! (More Details)

Brooklyn, NY - The Scott Eder Gallery doesn't hold their art collection back, and it's only the best for their fans and patrons! Which is why they're premiering a new collection of paintings and drawings from the dreamworld master himself, Jim Woodring. The exhibit You Drive! begins with an opening reception on January 10th at 6 pm with Woodring in attendance. If you can't make it to this star studded appearance, the exhibit will be running until February 27th, where you can gawk, get inspired, and even purchase original art! New Orleans, LA - Marguerite Van Cook and partner, James Romberger are special guests at this year's Wizard World: NOLA edition. The pair have been blazing across the country showcasing their newest release, Late Child and Other Animals, a gorgeous semi-autobiographical tale of generational relationships, history, and how we move forward. They will be there Saturday AND Sunday; show floor is open from 10-7. I expect an ol' fashioned New Orleans parade with cosplay, and trust that someone will get one started. (More Details)

January Book-A-Day Sale: Angelman
Written by Sonia Lei | Filed under sales specialsnicolas mahler 9 Jan 2015 3:00 AM

Angelman by Nicolas Mahler - CoverToday's January Book-A-Day title was named the "Best Funny Comic of 2012" by Paul Gravett.

Nicolas Mahler's Angelman turns the superhero trope directly on its head. The titular character is created by Korporate Comics in a flash of money-grubbing cynicism appalling even by their standards. However, Angelman’s powers (which include empathy and the ability to be a good listener) prove less than adequate to deal with the sinister threat of the insane plastic-surgeon villain Gender Bender — or with the fickleness of fashion, the rapacious super-heroine Lady Dentata, the increasingly desperate re-boot attempts by Korporate Comics, his oddly twin-like wife, a disastrously bad movie adaptation that single-handedly brings the vogue for super-hero movies to a screeching halt… all delineated in Mahler’s trademarked ultra-minimalism (albeit this time in spectacular color), and with his drier-than-dry wit.

For today only, Angelman is available from our mail-order department at 35% off!

Our thoughts are with the families of the cartoonists and their colleagues senselessly killed in Paris. We trust that in the end, the pen will prove mightier than the sword. By coincidence, Fantagraphics Bookstore & Gallery is hosting an appearance by French cartoonist collective Le Cagibi this Saturday, January 10 from 6:00 to 9:00 PM. Under the circumstances, this event takes on special significance.

La_Cagibi2

The visiting artists, from Lille, France, will conduct a free workshop on their inventive techniques and present their handcrafted publications. They encourage people to bring tee shirts to be silkscreened on site with their designs. The evening will also include an exhibition of Golden Age comic book covers by L. B. Cole with a slide talk by editor J. Michael Catron.

Please join us for this intriguing international cultural exchange on Saturday. This event coincides with the colorful Georgetown Art Attack featuring visual and performing arts presentations throughout the historic district. Fantagraphics Bookstore is located at 1201 S. Vale Street, only minutes from downtown Seattle. Phone 206.658.0110.

SAN FRAN: ZAP crew to rock City Lights

Zap Poster
The party you've been waiting your whole lifetime is here! On Thursday, January 22nd join Victor Moscoso, Robert Williams and Paul Mavrides at City Lights in San Francisco. They'll be in discussion with Gary Groth and Ron Turner (of Last Gasp) about The Complete Zap Comix. These legends start talking at 7pm on the dot, be there five minutes early if you need a smoke break. This nearly sold-out collection will be yours for the buying, theirs for the signing and for your family to argue about who will carry it home.
Zap Covers
In 1968, when underground comics were just strating to emerge, Robert Crumb's released his classic solo first issue of Zap. By the second issue, he had assembled a Seven Samurai of the best, the fiercest, and the most stylistically diversified cartoonists to come out of the countercultural kiln. Together they created a mind-blowing anthology of abstract hallucination, throat-slashing social satire, and shocking sexual excess, that made possible the ongoing wave of alternative cartoonists like Daniel Clowes, Chris Ware, and Charles Burns. The Complete Zap Comix collects every issue of Zap - every cover and every story, and even the Zam mini comic jam among the Zap artists - in a multi-volume, slipcased hardcover set. It will also include the 17th unpublished issue with work by Crumb, Moscoco, Wilson, Rodriguez, Shelton, Mavrides, and Williams.

"While the early issues stand as rowdy documents of the 1960s counterculture, Zap was also more. In reinventing the comic book, it set off legal battles and conversations over censorship, brought attention to cartoonists as artists, and set an example for generations of alternative comics creators like Charles Burns, Daniel Clowes, Joe Matt and the Hernandez Brothers." -Dana Jennings, The NY Times
