Frank is, as everyone knows, Jim Woodring's bestselling cartoon character. Jim, on the other hand, is Woodring's cartoon alter ego, the fictional doppelganger who has for 30 years inhabited Woodring's alternate universe where shifting, phantasmagoric landscapes, abrupt, hallucinatory visual revelations, and unexpected eruptions of uninhibited verbal self-flagellation are common- place. Jim is a mind-bending collection of all of Woodring's best non-Frank creative work — comics stories, prose stories, drawings, and paintings, with a new introduction and afterword by the man himself. Abounding in metaphors if you choose to see them and naked self-disclosure if you don't, this volume of comics, prose, and images — collected here for the first time — is a bounty of Woodring's inspired artistry.

(From Panter's 2013 Fredericks & Frasier exhibit)

Thursday, September 4th

Influential cartoonist, painter, and professor, Gary Panter, will be celebrating his newst work during an art exhibition at Fredericks & Frasier Gallery with an opening reception on September 4th, from 6-8 PM!

Surreal pop art, with a day-glo vibe. Or expressionistic sci-fi and punk cartoons. Maybe imaginative, and super saturated set designs. How about shoe illustrator? All of these things describe the award winning artist throughout his extensive and impressive career. Be a part of the brilliant madness with his third exhibition installment at the Chelsea gallery, that will open early on August 26th, and run through September 27th. Featuring original paintings and bead lists, which aesthetically sounds like the best thing ever.

An Age of License
by Lucy Knisley

196-page black & white/color 5.5" x 7.5" softcover • $19.99
ISBN: 978-1-60699-768-0

Ships in: September 2014 (subject to change) — Pre-Order Now

Acclaimed cartoonist Lucy Knisley (French Milk, Relish) got an opportunity that most only dream of: a travel-expenses-paid trip to Europe and Scandinavia, thanks to a book tour. An Age of License is Knisley's comics travel memoir recounting her charming (and romantic!) adventures. It’s punctuated by whimsical visual devices (such as a "new experiences" funnel); peppered with the cute cats she meets along the way; and, of course, features her hallmark — drawings and descriptions of food that will make your mouth water. But it’s not all kittens and raclette crêpes: Knisley's experiences are colored by anxieties, introspective self-inquiries, and quotidian revelations — about traveling alone in unfamiliar countries, and about her life and career — that many young adults will relate to. An Age of License — which takes its name from a French saying — is an Eat, Pray, Love for the alternative comics fan.

Visionary Artist Jim Woodring at Fantagraphics Bookstore
Written by Larry Reid | Filed under Jim WoodringFantagraphics Bookstoreeventsartists 5 Aug 2014 11:45 AM

Jim by Jim Woodring - Cover

July 30, 2014 – Seattle, WA. Jim Woodring is often described as among the most important cartoonists of his generation. This assessment is confirmed in the pages of JIM, the latest anthology of Woodring’s work. Meet this amazing artist at Fantagraphics Bookstore on Saturday, August 9 from 6:00 to 8:00 PM.

The eclectic content of JIM ranges from confessional autobiographical stories to the idiosyncratic allegorical comix that have come to define this prolific artist. This collection, available for the first time at Fantagraphics Bookstore, spans 30 years of spellbinding creativity.

Join us on Saturday, August 9 to commemorate the publication of this monumental work. The book signing coincides with the Georgetown Art Attack, which features challenging visual and performing arts presentations throughout the neighborhood's historic arts community.

And don’t miss our reception on Wednesday, August 6 from 6:00 to 9:00 PM for emerging Canadian cartoonist Georgia Webber with her compelling comix serial Dumb. This event will also serve to celebrate the City Arts Award bestowed upon Seattle cartoonist Max Clotfelter for his work in last April’s Intruder art exhibition at Fantagraphics Bookstore.

Fantagraphics Bookstore & Gallery is located at 1201 S. Vale Street (at Airport Way S.) just minutes south of downtown Seattle. Open daily 11:30 to 8:00 PM, Sundays until 5:00 PM. Phone 206.658.0110.
