Wuvable Oaf by Ed Luce - Cover Uncovered

Wuvable Oaf by Ed Luce - Cover

Cats galore adorn the final cover design for our eagerly awaited debut graphic novel from alternative comics creator Ed Luce. Starring a gay ex-wrestler on a quest to find true love, Wuvable Oaf is a "fairy tale" of sorts set in modern-day San Francisco. Also, there might be a few cats throughout.

Luce has been a well-known indie cartoonist in the Bay Area since he began Wuvable Oaf in 2008, and we are excited to collect his first 4 issues, plus additional short stories and extra material, into this hardcover volume and give it a wider audience!

You can pre-order Wuvable Oaf on our site now, and it is slated to be released in March 2015.

late child jhu

Wednesday, November 26th

New York - The official release of the brand new graphic novel from Marguerite Van Cook and James RombergerThe Late Child and Other Animals, kicks off at Jim Hanley's Universe (or JHU) with a signing from 6-8 pm. Amidst all the other new comic releases this Wednesday, Late Child sticks out as a gorgeously illustrated tale of generational struggles and growth. The poetric lyricism of Van Cook and Romberger is swift and harrowing, told through a collage of memories and intimate moments that are often uplifting despite the difficult endeavours. So catch this and probably an X-Men book this Wednesday! (More Details)

sub pop

Saturday, November 29th

Seattle, WA - If you were born in Washington, or have ever landed at SeaTac airport, chances are you're familiar with the music of Sub Pop Records. But before the iconic label, there was Sub Pop USA, a fanzine of underground sound, and proponents of bands that would soon be national icons (Nirvana, Mudhoney, Sonic Youth, just to name a few), and featured cover by artists like Charles Burns and Lynda Barry. Fantagraphics Bookstore and Gallery will be hosting the release of Sub Pop USA: The Subterranean Pop Music Anthology, 1980-88, published by Bazillion Points. We will also be joined by Calvin Johnson, founder of K Records in Olympia and main man of Beat Happenings, who will be dropping some of those beats live in store. Event begins at 6 pm! Blue Friday and Small Business Saturday
Written by Larry Reid | Filed under rockFantagraphics historyFantagraphics Bookstoreevents 24 Nov 2014 3:52 PM

 Blue_Friday

Don't miss another wild weekend at Fantagraphics Bookstore & Gallery. It begins with our annual Blue Friday celebration of all things Smurf. See our holiday Smurf Village and pick up a copy of the brand new Return of Smurfette, Finance Smurf, and other blue wonders, designed by former Fantagraphics art director Adam Grano for our good friends at Papercutz.

 Small_Business_Saturday

Come back the following day for Small Business Saturday, a national marketing effort aimed at encouraging holiday shoppers to patronize locally owned enterprises. Aside from the obvious irony of huge multinational corporations promoting a "Shop Small" campaign, we appreciate the sentiments. Please get out and support local independent businesses on Saturday - and every other day!

 Samll_Sub_Pop

Fantagraphics Bookstore commemorates Small Business Saturday with a party focused on an independent Northwest enterprise that changed the world. Sub Pop USA: The Subterranean Pop Music Anthology, 1980 - 1988 lavishly documents the early years of the legendary Seattle label. The zines, cassettes, and columns preserved in the book are prescient relics of a regional movement that left an indelible mark on our cultural landscape. Join author and Sub Pop founder Bruce Pavitt, DJ Dub Narcotic, and live music by K Records founder Calvin Johnson for this unforgettable celebration of creative independence on Saturday, November 29 at 6:00 PM.

In award-winning artist Peter Bagge's Sweatshop, Mel Bowling is a an out-of-touch cartoonist with a studio full of slave workers assistants who must cater to his every whim. When Bowling receives a letter informing him that he has been nominated for the "Ham Fisher Award," his arrogance and ego fly through the roof, much to the chagrin of his studio assistants.

Sweatshop is due to arrive in stores in February, but you can (and should) pre-order this first-time collection of Bagge's six-issue series now.

Saint Cole by Noah Van Sciver - Cover

We are pleased to reveal for you the final cover design for Ignatz-nominated cartoonist Noah Van Sciver's (Blammo, The Hypo: The Melancholic Young Lincoln) new upcoming graphic novel, Saint Cole. Continuing his interest in pathos and the human condition, Van Sciver is back with a story of 28-year-old Joe, a pizza server with a girlfriend and infant child who retreats further and further into alcohol as life continues to throw curve balls in his path.

Saint Cole is due to arrive in February of the new year, but why wait? It's up for pre-order now!

Zak Sally's Comic Experiment continues
Written by Jen Vaughn | Filed under Zak Sally 24 Nov 2014 10:29 AM

Sally
Zak Sally sent over some samples of his new comic in his Eisner-nominated series, RECIDIVIST Vol. IV, an experiment in comics. It's a gorgeous work of art following/not following a man, a place, a time, a house. The comic also comes with a great soundtrack to read to, it is most akin to a genre of ambient terror music (if that exists) and works smashingly well with reading the book. Like I mentioned, this comic is an experience, not your literal and linear reading experience but something to absorb--maybe not even read front to back. It is well worth the price of admission and just a gorgeous object to hold and feel.

You can buy a copy here for $20 smackaroos. There's also a preview flip through of the book. Recidivist vol. IV has 56 pages, on a couple different paper stocks, printed in 8 colors on the Risograph, and then metallic silver on the offset press. It is all written, drawn, printed, recorded, hand collated, stapled, and assembled by THE Zak Sally. There was also a sweet print that is not included but worth totally showing off!

Sally Stuff
Zak continues to make comics with his micropress, Le Mano, in Minneapolis and is one of the organizes behind the hot show Autoptic, coming up in August 2015. You can find other Zak Sally work here on our site.

Run Like Crazy Run Like Hell by Jacques Tardi - Video/Photo Slideshow

Run Like Crazy Run Like Hell
by Jacques Tardi; adapted from the novel by Jean-Patrick Manchette and translated by Doug Headline

104-page black & white 7.5" x 10.75" hardcover • $19.99
ISBN: 978-1-60699-620-1

Ships in: January 2015 (subject to change) — Pre-Order Now

After the teeth-rattling one-two punch of West Coast Blues and Like a Sniper Lining Up His Shot, Jacques Tardi makes a third appointment with ace crime writer Jean-Patrick Manchette for his wildest adaptation yet.

Peter Hartog, a rich industrialist, hires a troubled young woman, Julie, straight out of the psychiatric asylum to which she has been consigned for several years, to work as a nanny for his bratty kid Peter. But Hartog's seemingly altruistic impulse to help rehabilitate a troubled soul hides a darker motive: He plans to stage a fake kidnapping of his son, and use Julie as a scapegoat.

Unfortunately for Hartog, Julie proves infinitely more tough and resourceful than he expected, the kidnapping goes horribly, bloodily wrong, and now Julie and Peter are on the run, pursued both by the police and by Hartog's goons, led by the aging but fantastically dangerous contract killer Thompson — one of Manchette's most unforgettable creations, a golem of Terminator-like tenacity who is barely slowed down by physical punishment that would instantly kill a lesser man (he does not end the book with the same amount of eyes and feet as he started).

As with the other Tardi/Manchette books, Run Like Crazy... is full of moments of pitch-black humor, and a strong current of socio-political satire runs beneath its bleak surface. It's a ride to hell, but a devilishly fun one.

ISBN: 978-1-60699-806-9

In Ofelia, the sisters, the kids, and the cousins are all settled comfortably in California after leaving Palomar in Luba and Her Family. Luba and her cousin Ofelia’s relationship has always been fraught, but when Ofelia threatens to write a book about Luba, past memories, secrets, resentments, and pain resurface. Meanwhile, Luba’s children—genius Socorro, recently out-and-proud Doralís, and prickly Maricela—show that a talent for trouble may be hereditary. Luba’s sisters, Fritz and Petra, swap lovers (as usual), but…are Fritz and family friend Pipo sittin’ in a tree? These vividly drawn characters are charged with Hernandez’s trademark complexity; they live, love, age, fight— and die—in this sweeping, multigenerational saga.
