Written by Larry Reid | Filed under staffLB ColeFantagraphics Bookstoreevents 30 Dec 2014 1:59 PM

Fantagraphics Bookstore & Gallery begins a new year of lively programming on Saturday, January 10 with the fascinating exhibition Black Light: The World of L. B. Cole and a workshop by French comix collective Le Cagibi.

 Black-Light_World_of_Cole

L.B. Cole created some of the most stunning, proto-psychedelic comic book covers of all time. Black Light: The World of L. B. Cole is the first retrospective of his career, featuring the largest collection of Cole artwork ever assembled. He became famous for his brilliant primary colors - often over black backgrounds - which he used on alluring covers for crime, suspense, science fiction, and romance comics and pulp magazines. Editor J. Michael Catron will give a brief slide presentation on the remarkable career of this amazing artist from the golden age of comic books.

Cagibi

Le Cagibi is an art gallery, publishing house, screenprint and engraving studio in Lilli, France. In its 5 years of existence, Le Cagibi has produced handcrafted books with inventive printing and binding techniques. These resourceful visiting artists will conduct a free workshop at Fantagraphics Bookstore. Patrons are encouraged to bring their own garments for screenprinting. There will also be a presentation of Cagibi's unique books.

January_Art_Attack

This event on Saturday, January 10 from 6:00 to 9:00 PM coincides with the colorful Georgetown Art Attack, featuring visual and performing arts presentations throughout the historic arts community. Seahawks fans can check out the playoff action on large screens at one of several bars in the neighborhood. Fantagraphics Bookstore & Gallery is located at 1201 S. Vale Street (at Airport Way S.), only minutes south of downtown Seattle. Open daily 11:30 to 8:00 PM, Sundays until 5:00 PM. Phone 206.658.0110.

The Late child
Trot out of your flat and shake off the holiday malaise Wednesday, January 14th as Marguerite Van Cook and James Romberger make a guest appearance at Gosh! Comics in London. On a world tour for The Late Child and Other Animals, Van Cook and Romberger will join the monthly comics discussion group at Gosh! called Process and discuss this beautiful, poignant graphic memoir.

The good stuff starts at 7pm on the nose so don't be late for The Late Child, lest we make some terrible Big Ben jokes from across the pond. The Late Child and Other Animals is not only a gorgeous graphic novel by this comics power couple but damn good read as the generational struggles of a mother and daughter come to light after WWII. See you there!

Happy Boxing Day! Our Fantabucks Sale is BACK!
Written by Sonia Lei | Filed under sales specials 26 Dec 2014 12:00 AM

Fantabucks 2-for-1 Sale!

Time for a last hurrah for 2014! This has been a very good year for Fantagraphics. Over the past 12 months, we have published more than 100 books, thanks to our hardworking staff and our amazing Kickstarter supporters—and a dozen of those books have become New York Times Bestsellers! Two of our longstanding favorite artists, Jaime and Gilbert Hernandez, were both awarded their first Eisner Awards (long-overdue, in our not-so-humble opinion); Charles Burns' Black Hole got a cameo in the sci-fi action film Dawn of the Planet of the Apes; and our very own Gary Groth received The Stranger's Genius Award in Literature. And that's really just the tip of the iceberg.

To celebrate another year of publishing the world's greatest cartoonists, we'd like to share the love back with you, our loyal Fanta readers.

Remember that one time we offered a Fantabucks 2-for-1 Coupon? Here's a refresher:

Each FantaBucks 2-for-1 Coupon costs just $55 and gets you a unique coupon code worth $110 toward your next purchase of $110 or more (not including shipping) here on Fantagraphics.com! That's like getting half off $110 worth of merchandise! You can buy as many coupons as you like, but you can only use one coupon per order and you must redeem each coupon entirely in a single purchase. You can also buy coupons as gifts — just tell us the recipients' email addresses at checkout. Beginning on Tuesday, December 30, we will email you your personalized coupon code(s).

Important note for 20/20 Club members: with your standard discount, you pay only $44, and so you will receive a coupon in the amount of $88, which, with your discount, is still good for that $110 worth of merchandise. (Paying attention in math class is paying off!)

Monday, December 29, 2014 is the last day to grab this amazing deal, so don't miss out!

Creeping Death from Neptune: The Life and Comics of Basil Wolverton Vol. 1
by Basil Wolverton, edited by Greg Sadowski

304-page full color 8" x 10.5" hardcover • $39.99
ISBN: 978-1-60699-505-1

"A revolutionary and a genius with a troubled life and a horrific career path, this volume is the first of two that print his 'serious' works as well as detailing his life during the making of them. Looking for a gift for someone who loves the darker side of the history of comics? Look no further." –Menachem Luchins (of Escape Pod Comics), 13th Dimension

"It's remarkable to see art so twisted applied to such vivid pulp tales - almost as though Wolverton was trying his hardest to be Alex Raymond, but couldn't help turning out images to rival Salvador Dalí." - The A.V. Club

NYC: Lucy Knisley at The Strand
Written by Jen Vaughn | Filed under Lucy Knisleyevents 23 Dec 2014 1:28 PM
Lucy Knisley
There are still dinners to stretch your pants, holidays songs to sing, brightly lit-balls to drop but that doesn't mean you can't start planning parties for next year! On Monday, January 12th in the sparkling new year of 2015, cartoonist Lucy Knisley will be throwing one hell of a new year for a new book, Displacement, at The Strand in New York City. Lucy's last travelogue, An Age of License, featured the whimsical travels of a 20-something with time stretching infinitely in front of her. But in the pretty-yet-gritty Displacement, Lucy takes her two 90 year-old grandparents out on a cruise. It explores ageism, mortality and life-long love in gorgeous watercolors, all bookended in a small WWII biography from Lucy's grandfather's journals.

So join Lucy in conversation with Marie Anello from The Absolute, at 7pm on January 12th and get a copy of the fully watercolored Displacement before it is out in stores. Buy a copy of Displacement or a $15 Strand gift card in order to attend this event. All options admit one person. Please note that payment is required for all online event orders at the time of checkout. The event will be located in the Strand's 3rd floor Rare Book Room at the store at 828 Broadway at 12th Street.
Displacement
Marie Anello is a writer, comics enthusiast, and book reviewer located in New York City. Her reviews of webcomics and small press publications can be found in the online magazine The Absolute. She also happens to be a professional opera singer, but that's another story.

Get Zapped at Fantagraphics Bookstore

Our tribute to S. Clay Wilson at Fantagraphics Bookstore & Gallery on Saturday was a blast! Highlights included an entertaining presentation on the underground master by Patrick Rosenkranz, after which our friend Blaine Cook, frontman for metallic punk pioneers The Accused, showed Wilson's artwork for their More Fun Than an Open Casket Funeral LP. This marked the first time the original artwork had been publicly displayed. (Beware: Blaine is opening the Georgetown location of his award-winning Zippy's Burgers in January just three blocks from the bookstore.) A little later John Doe of X arrived ahead of their show at El Corazon. Good times.
