ACES HIGH (EC Comics Library) by George Evans on comiXology
Written by Jen Vaughn | Filed under George EvansEC Comicsdigital comicscomiXology 26 Nov 2014 4:14 PM
Aces High
Now soaring through the air waves and wifi networks to land safely on your digital reading device is ACES HIGH illustrated and some written by George Evans. This EC Comics Library is filled from wing tip to landing equipment with aviation war stories, including the titular comic of the same name, now available digitally thanks to comiXology. As a bonus, we present a rarity: Evans's never-before-reprinted 3-D story of World War I ace Frank Luke (in regular, easy-on-the-eyes 2-D). This volume also includes numerous Evans crime and shock stories, including "As Ye Sow...," "...My Brother's Keeper," and "Cadillac Fever." Other war stories, many done in collaboration with Harvey Kurtzman, include "Napoleon!" and "Flaming Coffins" (which Evans wrote, about the inherent perils of WW I aircraft). Like all books in the Fantagraphics EC line, Aces High features essays and notes by EC experts on these superbly crafted, classic comic book masterpieces.
Napoleon
With 210 pages of adventure, this $22.99 collection of masterwork comics with thrill you. The perfect digital comics for EC fans and WWI enthusiasts during the centennial of the Great War.

"All of these books are essential purchases for comics fans... These are the books that best show off how EC took genre stories seriously, striving to create comics that didn't treat readers as naive or ignorant." - The Los Angeles Times

"...I am not only appreciative...but also very impressed. [The books] are spectacular packages of their featured artist and their stories." - Al Feldstein

Be Early for The Late Child at KGB Bar in NYC

nyc late child

Sunday, November 30th

New York, NY - The KGB Bar & Lit Journal of NYC is an institution, just ask any literary arts lover or writer. Serving the community by hosting free readings almost every night of the week, showcasing the talents of poets, fiction authors, non-fiction authors, and on very very very special occassion, graphic novelists. For this year's Annual Thanksgiving Comix and Graphic Novelist Night KGB is welcoming two other NYC institutions, Marguerite Van Cook and James Romberger, creators of their new book, The Late Child and Other Animals

Piecing together the narrative of her life, and that of her mother's in The Late Child, Marguerite Van Cook writes a generational biography that reflects the past, present and future in every story; this book is definitely required reading. Van Cook and Romberger will be joined at KGB by a handful of other artists including Karen Katz, Jon Allen, and Seattle native Laura Knetzger. Gives thanks this Sunday to the almighty Comix Spirit, that we may continue to be blessed with books such as these, that can be enjoyed at places like KGB.

FREE, from 7 pm - 9 pm.

SEATTLE: Eroyn Franklin + Tim Lane in the Fanta Store
Written by Jen Vaughn | Filed under Tim LaneFantagraphics BookstoreeventsEroyn Franklin 26 Nov 2014 11:31 AM
Lonesome GO
Next Saturday, December 6th with the crisp air at your heels, warm yourself in the light of the Fantagrapahics Bookstore as two cartoonists present their modern comics. Neo-noir cartoonist Tim Lane and prolific self-publishing cartoonist Eroyn Franklin will fill the dark night with their tales of trouble and woe from 7pm on at the bookstore in Georgetown.
Dirt Bag
The event is also the Marathon II closing party! This is your last chance to ogle the curated work of Short Run Comix and Arts Festival exhibitors including John Porcellino, Pam Wishbow, Josh Simmons, MariNaomi, Ed Piskor, and Tom Neely.

Tim Lane Lonesome Go
Alternative cartoonist and illustrator Tim Lane resides in St. Louis, a bleak urban landscape that provides the backdrop for his austere suspense stories. Inspired by midcentury film noir, pulp adventure, and early EC crime comics, Lane constructs unflinching narratives with a seductively stark rendering technique. His acclaimed anthology, Abandoned Cars from Fantagraphics Books, is now available in trade paperback editions. Lane will present his latest collection of new American mythology, The Lonesome Go.

Eroyn
Eroyn Franklin
is a Seattle-based comics artist, illustrator, and co-founder of Short Run Comix and Arts Festival. As Short Run's final events come to a close, and everyone wants a little more comics culture, Eroyn will present a sneak preview of her upcoming graphic novel, Dirtbag. The book is filled with ink wash illustrations that evoke a palpable sense of place and cinematic nostalgia. After escaping the monotony of suburban Texas, Eroyn embraces a dirtbag lifestyle fueled by idealism and the search for authenticity in the world of drunks, radicals, and sundry riffraff. She embarks on a lowbrow grand tour - dumpster diving, scamming rides, and squatting her way through Europe. Dirtbag is Eroyn's third graphic novel and is being produced with a CityArtist grant from The Seattle Office of Arts and Culture.

Wuvable Oaf by Ed Luce - Cover

Cats galore adorn the final cover design for our eagerly awaited debut graphic novel from alternative comics creator Ed Luce. Starring a gay ex-wrestler on a quest to find true love, Wuvable Oaf is a "fairy tale" of sorts set in modern-day San Francisco. Also, there might be a few cats throughout.

Luce has been a well-known indie cartoonist in the Bay Area since he began Wuvable Oaf in 2008, and we are excited to collect his first 4 issues, plus additional short stories and extra material, into this hardcover volume and give it a wider audience!

You can pre-order Wuvable Oaf on our site now, and it is slated to be released in March 2015.

late child jhu

Wednesday, November 26th

New York - The official release of the brand new graphic novel from Marguerite Van Cook and James RombergerThe Late Child and Other Animals, kicks off at Jim Hanley's Universe (or JHU) with a signing from 6-8 pm. Amidst all the other new comic releases this Wednesday, Late Child sticks out as a gorgeously illustrated tale of generational struggles and growth. The poetric lyricism of Van Cook and Romberger is swift and harrowing, told through a collage of memories and intimate moments that are often uplifting despite the difficult endeavours. So catch this and probably an X-Men book this Wednesday! (More Details)

sub pop

Saturday, November 29th

Seattle, WA - If you were born in Washington, or have ever landed at SeaTac airport, chances are you're familiar with the music of Sub Pop Records. But before the iconic label, there was Sub Pop USA, a fanzine of underground sound, and proponents of bands that would soon be national icons (Nirvana, Mudhoney, Sonic Youth, just to name a few), and featured cover by artists like Charles Burns and Lynda Barry. Fantagraphics Bookstore and Gallery will be hosting the release of Sub Pop USA: The Subterranean Pop Music Anthology, 1980-88, published by Bazillion Points. We will also be joined by Calvin Johnson, founder of K Records in Olympia and main man of Beat Happenings, who will be dropping some of those beats live in store. Event begins at 6 pm! (More Details)

 the collective

Sunday, November 30th

Seattle, WA - Hopefully you're still satiated from Tofurkey, and have let the black friday dust settle before venturing out of the house. And hopefully your first stop will be to Melrose Market Studios where you'll join us and dozens of other local crafters, designers and businesses in a celebration of buying small and local! The Seattle Collective Holiday Bazaar presents hand crafted and wholly loved items, which truly make the best presents for yourself (and I guess your loved ones) during the holidays. Stop by between 11 am - 6 pm where we'll have a gathering of new titles and well beloved ones to keep you company during these dark and rainy months. If that doesn't sound like a deal, there's also liquor. 'Nuff said? (More Details)

Blue Friday and Small Business Saturday
Written by Larry Reid | Filed under rockFantagraphics historyFantagraphics Bookstoreevents 24 Nov 2014 3:52 PM

 Blue_Friday

Don't miss another wild weekend at Fantagraphics Bookstore & Gallery. It begins with our annual Blue Friday celebration of all things Smurf. See our holiday Smurf Village and pick up a copy of the brand new Return of Smurfette, Finance Smurf, and other blue wonders, designed by former Fantagraphics art director Adam Grano for our good friends at Papercutz.

 Small_Business_Saturday

Come back the following day for Small Business Saturday, a national marketing effort aimed at encouraging holiday shoppers to patronize locally owned enterprises. Aside from the obvious irony of huge multinational corporations promoting a "Shop Small" campaign, we appreciate the sentiments. Please get out and support local independent businesses on Saturday - and every other day!

 Samll_Sub_Pop

Fantagraphics Bookstore commemorates Small Business Saturday with a party focused on an independent Northwest enterprise that changed the world. Sub Pop USA: The Subterranean Pop Music Anthology, 1980 - 1988 lavishly documents the early years of the legendary Seattle label. The zines, cassettes, and columns preserved in the book are prescient relics of a regional movement that left an indelible mark on our cultural landscape. Join author and Sub Pop founder Bruce Pavitt, DJ Dub Narcotic, and live music by K Records founder Calvin Johnson for this unforgettable celebration of creative independence on Saturday, November 29 at 6:00 PM.
