Dash Shaw in ArtForum March 2015
Written by Jen Vaughn | Filed under Dash Shawartistsart 2 Mar 2015 2:13 PM
Artforum
Cartoonist pioneer, Dash Shaw, is forever reaching beyond what we perceive and accept as comics. In the current issue of ArtForum, new on the stands this week, Shaw made a Top Ten list of his favorites in the art, publishing and just whole damn world. Here's a pic Dash took of the first page featuring Breakdown Press, a Quaker comic, a 3-D musuem artists use as a modern morgue (files of reference art), and our favorite Billy Ireland Cartoon Library and Museum. Grab a copy at your local bookstore to read the rest of the Top Ten or visit the website!

Dash is currently a Cullman Center Fellow and is spending much of his time researching his own graphic novel on Quakers at the New York Public Library.

The Late Child
Need some Monday night fun? James Romberger and Marguerite Van Cook will be appearing at the United Citizen's Brigade Village East for Nat Townsen's Downtown Variety Hour! They'll be reading from The Late Child and Other Animals, taking the same stage as Janeane Garofalo, Cipha Sounds from Chapelle's Show, and comedian Brendan McLaughlin! Pictured below, comedian and native New Yorker Nat Towsen (VICE, CollegeHumor) welcomes hilarious comedians, local artists, and Village luminaries for a regular variety show in the eclectic tradition of the disappearing downtown Manhattan culture. Every show also features a "Downtown History" segment, music from classic local musicians, and free giveaways from local businesses. New Yorkers, transplants, and tourists are all welcome.

Sponsored by Two Boots and Forbidden Planet. Tickets are a steal at twice the price but are only $5! The fun starts at 8pm sharp.

Black River by Josh Simmons - Inside Page

Our printer copies of Black River have arrived, and the sun just disappeared behind a large, grey cloud.

Coincidence?

Josh Simmons' newest long form work since his 2007 acclaimed graphic novel House is a post-apocalyptic tale that, at its core, embodies despair and the most basic, primal graspings of survival. Don't go looking for a happy ending here.

Black River hits bookstores this May. Fans of Simmons, horror, and post-apocalyptic stories, pre-order this book here.

Drinkable Oaf
Written by Jen Vaughn | Filed under Ed Lucearbitrary cuteness 2 Mar 2015 11:55 AM

Wuvable oaf
We have a thing for drinks and comics here. Whether it's Elysian's 12 Beers of the Apocalypse (with Charles Burns) or the right Love and Rockets cocktails to a glass of bourbon only Scrooge McDuck could afford.... if there's a glass we'll fill it! The site Women Write About Comics recently created some character drinks and made a bit of a tasty one based on Ed Luce's upcoming book.

The Wuvable Oaf

Jalapeno vodka (lots of it), Crush strawberry soda, Cointreau, Looza cherry nectar, a dash of rosewater and....a dash of cumin on the top..... serve in a frosted pint glass/pitcher with several lime wedges. Like ten lime wedges. Enjoy entire beverage vessel while listening to The Smiths with your 27 cats. Try not to shed body hair into the drink. –Colleen

Try not to shed body hair? Pfff, only if it's in a sippy cup, lady. Pre-order a copy of Wuvable Oaf today and check out the advance copies of Luce's comic we'll have at Emerald City Comicon at the end of the month.

If you've never been to a PechaKucha event, prepare yourself for a whirlwind of informative speakers, engaging content, and new perspectives on a wide variety of content. 20 images are shown for 20 seconds each while presenters talk about corresponding topics. The format of has gone global, and PKN Seattle never disappoints.

Seattle, as many readers are probably aware, has a deep and rich history of being what many consider to be the birthing ground of alternative comics in the 1970's with creators like Charles Burns, Matt Groening, and Lynda Barry. With remarks from their contemporaries, and from those who have been influenced by them, like Max Clotfelter, Tom Van Deusen, and Kelly Froh, this event is a must go to for any fan of the history of comics, art, and Washington State.
