Josh Simmons returns with his first full-length graphic novel since 2007's acclaimed House. A group of women, one man, and two dogs are making their way through a post-apocalyptic world in search of a city that supposedly still has electricity and some sort of civilization. Along the way, they go to a comedy club, take a drug called Gumdrop, and encounter gangs of men who are fools, lunatics, or murderous sadists. In other words, all manner of terrors.

Josh Simmons is one of the field's most distinctive voices in the genre of horror (The Furry Trap, House),and this full-length graphic novel is his best work yet, echoing director John Carpenter's perfect tick-tock pacing, as well as Shirley Jackson's ability to transcend genre and turn it into literature.

Daniel Clowes Unveils the Complete Eightball at Fantagraphics Bookstore
Written by Larry Reid | Filed under The StrangerFantagraphics historyeventsDaniel Clowes 15 Apr 2015 12:15 PM

Please join us in welcoming a truly gifted artist, Daniel Clowes, to Fantagraphics Bookstore this Saturday, April 18 from 6:00 to 8:00 PM as we unveil the anxiously anticipated Complete Eightball 1 - 18.

Complete-Eightball2

With his long running Eightball series, Clowes combined enigmatic long-form stories with biting satire to create an enduring cultural milestone. In a cover feature in the current issue of The Stranger, Clowes recalls, "Almost everything in the comic is based on something, a joke I had with one of my friends or a real-life experience, and all the characters are based vaguely on people I know... It all feels like reading a diary almost, even though it's entirely fictional."

Clowes will be available to sign advance copies of the Complete Eightball as well as his other sensational graphic novels. Don't miss this rare opportunity to meet one of the country's most accomplished cartoonists. Bonus: It's Record Store Day at neighboring Georgetown Records.

Fantagraphics Bookstore is located at 1201 S. Vale Street in the heart of Seattle's historic Georgetown arts community. Open daily 11:30 to 8:00 PM, Sundays until 5:00 PM. Phone 206.658.0110. See you on Saturday.

The Kurdles and Angry Youth on comiXology
Written by RJ Casey | Filed under Robert GoodinJohnny RyancomiXology 15 Apr 2015 10:38 AM
Whether you are closer to infant or infantile, we've got you covered this week at comiXology!

First up is the release of Robert Goodin's The Kurdles.
Kurdlesipadcover.jpg

In the spirit of Hergé's Tintin or Carl Barks' Uncle Scrooge, The Kurdles is a comic for both parents and children spiced with a teaspoon of strange. Sally is a teddy bear who gets separated from her owner while on a drive in the country. Desperate to find her way home, she stumbles upon Kurdleton, a place in the midst of a peculiar crises; the inhabitants' forest home has grown hair, eyes, and a mouth! Can the creatures work with their new friend to keep Kurdleton from growing legs and running away? Goodin, an animation industry veteran (American Dad, Rugrats), delivers a timeless classic in his debut graphic novel. Capture the imagination on your own personal reading device for only $17.99!

Shifting from "all age" to "all rage", we are also proud to present Johnny Ryan's Angry Youth Comix.
angryyouthcomixipad.jpg

Johnny Ryan's utterly unpretentious taboo-tackling is an infectious and hilarious bombardment of political incorrectness, taking full advantage of the medium's absurdist potential for maximum laughs. In an age when comics are growing up and aspiring to more mature and hoity-toity heights, Ryan builds on the visceral tradition that cartooning has had on our collective funny bone for over a century. Now, for the first time, all fourteen issues of Ryan's career-defining series Angry Youth Comix (2000-2008) are collected in one place. Get your screen-scrolling (or nose-picking) finger ready because you can have the comics, the covers, and even the contentious letters pages, all for $26.99 at comiXology.

Fantagraphics Bookstore & Gallery is pleased to present the debut of Josh Simmons' latest work, Black River, with an art exhibition, short film screening and book signing on Saturday, April 25 from 6:00 to 8:00 PM.

 Black_River_large

Simmons returns with his first full-length graphic novel since 2007's acclaimed House. A group of women, one man, and two dogs make their way through a post-apocalyptic nightmare in search of civilization in this epic horror comic. Simmons will display original pages from the book together with prints, two film shorts, and a book signing at the reception. Adding to the atmosphere, Fantagraphics Bookstore is located along the former banks of Seattle's Black River, which dried up after the dredging of the Lake Washington Ship Canal in 1916.

Joining Josh Simmons on April 25 will be his colleagues from Seattle's adventurous Intruder comix tabloid celebrating the release of their 15th issue. The Intruder regularly publishes the work of the region's most accomplished cartoonists. Simmons contributes a story to the latest issue, illustrated by Joe Garber.
