2:00-2:45 pm // WILD MAN: A Confluence of Art, Science and History: T Edward Bak's natural history-oriented graphic novel-biography, WILD MAN: The Strange Journey and Fantastic Account of the Naturalist Georg Wilhelm Steller was serialized from 2009-2011 in the Fantagraphics comics anthology MOME. The artist has conducted his own research throughout SE Alaska and the Aleutian archipelago, as well as St. Petersburg (Russian Federation) where he recently delivered presentations of his work for this ongoing project. Mr. Bak will relate his travel experiences, share WILD MAN artwork, relate the challenges of his process and research, and discuss his recent collaboration with writer Sarah Mirk on the Oregon History Comics project, "Voices from Celilo Falls", which further explores his interest in North Pacific natural history. 1:00-1:45 pm // Frank Santoro's Comic Book Layout Workshop: Frank Santoro (Cold Heat, The Comics Journal) will present a Layout Workshop for comic book makers via Skype. Borrowing lessons from his Correspondence Course, Frank will lead an informal talk and workshop which will revolve around formats available to makers in 2012 - and how comics composed for print might be translated to the web. 1:00-1:45 pm // Spotlight on Peter Bagge: Best known for his comic-book series Hate, which helped to define the grunge generation, and his recent contributions to Reason magazine, Peter Bagge is always willing to confront hard-hitting societal issues with intelligence, wit, and funny bone intact. Join us for a conversation with the multiple Harvey and Eagle Award-winning cartoonist, whose newest series, Reset, has just been launched in the Dark Horse Originals line. Fantagraphics is thrilled to announce that the Austrian Cultural Forum in New York City will host an evening with award-winning Austrian cartoonist and animator Nicolas Mahler this Thursday, April 26th!

Join Nicolas at 6:30 PM as he chats with fellow Austrian, author and journalist JM Stim, about his work, including his brand new book Angelman, his first book to be released in English in six years!  This book will be making its worldwide debut at the event, so come by and purchase a copy for Nicolas to sign for you!

It's a homecoming tonight for our editor Pat Thomas, who is back in town in the middle of his book tour for Listen, Whitey! The Sights and Sounds of Black Power 1965-1975!

And it's an extra special event, because it's also a benefit for the Life Enrichment Bookstore, Seattle's only Black-owned and operated bookstore. It has been in business for more than 17 years and has provided healing, history, support, and transformation through educational workshops, book clubs, and celebrations.

Join Pat there tonight, Friday, April 20th, from 6:00 to 9:00 PM! He will be doing a reprise of the tremendous multimedia presentation for Listen, Whitey! that he did at Washington Hall last month.

He will be joined by special guest, Aaron Dixon, the founder of the Seattle Black Panther Party back in the '60s.  His lecture will capture first-hand knowledge of the legendary Black Panthers, as well as Seattle’s contemporary African-American landscape.

Pat will also be joined by Dr. Maxine Mimms, founder of the Tacoma campus of Evergreen State College, which has provided the Black community of Tacoma the opportunity of the Evergreen college experience. In the early 1960’s, when she taught in Seattle, one of her students was Jimi Hendrix!

This is sure to be a very special night to benefit a very special bookstore!  Proceeds will help keep the Life Enrichment Bookstore thriving as a business and gathering place for village building activities. The Life Enrichment Bookstore is located at 5023 Rainier Avenue South in Seattle.

Hey, remember that exhibit I told you about last month? The one curated by our own Eisner Award-winning graphic novelist, artist and editor, Paul Karasik? Over at the Northern Illinois Unversity Art Museum in DeKalb, IL? Yes, “Graphic Novel Realism: Backstage at the Comics,” that's the one!

The show is still open through Friday, May 25th, but if you can't make it to Dekalb (me neither), check out this video Paul shot featuring a walk-through of the exhibit! You'll spot source materials, sketches, and finished work by Joyce Farmer, Jaime Hernandez, Mark Newgarden and Megan Montague Cash, as well as Jason Lutes, Seth and James Sturm. Thanks, Paul!

A "moving hold" is an animation technique that involves cycling several drawings of a stationary character, giving the drawn lines a sense of vibration and energy. And it's also the title of the Lilli Carré exhibit opening in Chicago this week!

Moving Holds opens this Friday, April 20th at Western Exhibitions. For the show, Carré has created three different sets of work that all incorporate moving holds, as an idea, a technique, or both. Don't miss the opening reception from 5:00 to 8:00 PM this Friday!

Western Exhibitions is located at 119 N Peoria St, 2A, in Chicago, IL.  Moving Holds runs through May 19, 2012.
