Can_Y_I

This summer ends with a blast at Bumbershoot! The Northwest's foremost arts festival features the premiere of Fantagraphics Follies, showcasing diverse works from some of Seattle's most notorious cartoonists. Don't miss your favorite Fantagraphics artists appearing on stage in the lively variety show format of a late-night talk show at the colorful Labor Day weekend event.

 Jim_Giant_Pen

The entertainment begins big with Jim Woodring demonstrating his prowess with a giant quill pen. Fine artist (and finer cartoonist) Eroyn Franklin puts on a shadow puppet show, followed by the hilarious comix comedy routine of Kelly FrohEllen Forney plays Marbles before her stint on the couch, and Danny Bland reads In Case We DiePeter Bagge's pop combo Can You Imagine? featuring Steve Fisk performs the role of house band as Fantagraphics Bookstore curator Larry "Letterman" Reid plays host. Big fun for all ages.

New School by Dash Shaw

April 23, 2013 – Seattle, WA. One of America’s most provocative cartoonists and animators will appear at Fantagraphics Bookstore & GalleryDash Shaw will discuss his work, screen animated shorts, and sign copies of new publications at a reception on Saturday, May 4 at 6:00 PM at Fantagraphics’ lively space at 1201 S. Vale St. in Georgetown.

Shaw is the creator of several highly regarded comix and graphic novels including Bottomless Belly Button in 2008. The artist followed that success with The Unclothed Man in the 35th Century A.D., a collection of short stories combined with documentation of his dazzling animated shorts for IFC.com.

Dash Shaw

The artist will discuss his work and screen short animations including Seraph, which premiered at the recent Sundance Film Festival. He’ll sign copies of his new comic book 3 New Stories and his ambitious hardcover graphic novel New School.

This event coincides with Free Comic Book Day, a national promotion intended to expose new audiences to the joys of comix. Fantagraphics Bookstore will issue an exclusive 16-page Freak Comic Book mini featuring a stellar cast of local alternative artists. Edited by Intruder contributor Marc Palm, the book includes new works by Max Clotfelter, Kelly Froh, Eroyn Franklin, Tom Van Deusen, Ben Horak, Darin Shuler, David Lasky, Aidan Fitzgerald, Pat Moriarity, John Ohannesian, Max Badger, and James Stanton. As May 4 is also widely recognized as “Star Wars Day” – (ahem, “May the Fourth Be With You”) – the mini concludes with touching tributes to Yoda by Peter BaggeEllen ForneyJim Woodring, and Kazimir Stzrepek. Freak Comic Book is limited to 100 copies. Many of the contributing artists will be in attendance to sign their work. “This is the comic you’re looking for.”

Fantagraphics Commemorates Sub Pop's Silver Jubilee
Written by Larry Reid | Filed under rockPeter BaggeFantagraphics historyFantagraphics BookstoreeventsDanny BlandDaniel ClowesCharles Burnsart shows 18 Apr 2013 2:27 PM

Make hotel reservations now for the alternative music event of the decade. Sub Pop celebrates 25 years of rockin' the world with a free concert featuring 15 bands right outside our Georgetown bookstore on July 13. The official line-up as announced by Tad Doyle, Kim Thayil, Mark Arm, and Jack Endino will be complemented by some amazing guests. (We'll leave it to your imagination, but read Tad's lips at the end of the video for a clue.)

While serving as director of Seattle's Center on Contemporary Art in 1989, I somehow coerced Sub Pop moguls Bruce Pavitt and Jonathan Poneman into programming a weekend of music at our downtown space. The show featured Nirvana, Mudhoney, Gwar, TAD, Dwarves, Dickless, Supersuckers, and other awesome acts. CoCA intern Owen Connell created this memorable poster and wheat pasted them all over town. These shows seemed cathartic somehow. Maybe you had to be there. If you weren't, you're in luck...

 Soda_Pop

I'm reviving this concept for an exhibit at Fantagraphics Bookstore coinciding with Sub Pop's Silver Jubilee on July 13. Focusing on the formative years of Sub Pop, the show examines the intersection of comix and music in Seattle beginning with the birth of Sub Pop in 1980. It includes art and artifacts by Charles Burns, Lynda BarryPeter Bagge, Art SpiegelmanCharles PetersonDaniel Clowes, and many more. Danny Bland will read from his new novel In Case We Die set in Seattle's grunge era. This'll rock hard! More details will be revealed later, but schedule your summer vacation accordingly.

Sub_Pop1000

You don't have to wait until summer to enjoy Sub Pop's contribution to modern music. This Saturday is Record Store Day and our retail partners Georgetown Records will have the special Sub Pop 1000 vinyl LP, as well as exclusive Record Store Day offerings from local label Light in the Attic including Roky Erickson, PiL, and Mercury Rev. Please come by, and wherever you are -- support your local record store!

Lucy Knisley Presents Relish: My Life in the Kitchen at Fantagraphics Bookstore

April 11, 2013 - Seattle, WA. New York cartoonist Lucy Knisley will appear at Fantagraphics Bookstore & Gallery on Friday, April 19 at 7:00 PM to discuss her new graphic memoir Relish: My Life in the Kitchen.

As the daughter of a chef, the artist examines her life in the context of cooking, from casual childhood comfort food to exotic gourmet cuisine. Knisley's engaging narrative is interspersed with appealing recipes, resulting in readers working up quite an appetite. With that in mind, her slide talk will be followed by a tasting of some of the delicious offerings in the book: Sautéed mushrooms, pasta carbonara, chocolate chip cookies, and more. The perfect complement to a comic book about food!
