David Levine, R.I.P.
Written by Eric Reynolds | Filed under David Levine 29 Dec 2009 8:29 AM

I was very sorry to read this morning that the great David Levine passed away yesterday. Fantagraphics was fortunate to publish Levine's AMERICAN PRESIDENTS last year, and it's a wonderful showcase of his singular talent. Our heart goes out to Mr. Levine's family. For more on Mr. Levine, I highly recommend this excellent VANITY FAIR feature from last fall.

Merry Christmas to Me
Written by Eric Reynolds | Filed under Jeremy Eaton 28 Dec 2009 12:27 PM

My totally awesome and amazing wife commissioned this "jumble" of iconic cartoon characters from our good pal Jeremy Eaton as a Christmas gift to me. I am a lucky man. Can you name them all? Sorry for the glare.

Colonel Groth in the Boudoir with an Xacto Knife
Written by Eric Reynolds | Filed under staff 28 Dec 2009 10:31 AM

Shortly before Christmas, we had a Fantagraphics holiday party hosted by yours truly and Mrs. Truly. I forgot to take any pictures, which is a shame, because a splendid time was had by all. Most of the Fanta staff was in attendance, with the noticeable exception of Ms. Kristy Valenti, although her presence was most certainly felt, thanks to a gift delivered via partner-in-crime Gavin Lees (apologies in advance for the crappy photo evidence):

Kristy created a Fantagraphics-themed custom version of the ol' CLUE board game, featuring representations of most of the Fanta office staff and set in the palatial mansion of FBI HQ. As the story begins, Kristy herself has been the victim of foul play, and one of these characters done it:

The remaining questions are of course WHERE and HOW did he/she do it? The board was redesigned to feature all of the main rooms in the office. These two are my favorites:

Gary's Boudoir of course needs no explanation; Kim's office is called the kennel because he shares his office with Ludwig, the Fanta dachshund. The game is rounded out with various potential weapons from the office and custom location cards featuring locations in the mansion.

What else can I say? Kristy rules.

Gahan Wilson was on WNYC's Leonard Lopate show today, promoting GAHAN WILSON: 50 YEARS OF PLAYBOY cartoons. The show is archived here. There's even a slideshow!

Best News of the Week
Written by Eric Reynolds | Filed under Gilbert Hernandez 15 Dec 2009 9:46 AM
Gilbert Hernandez receives a United States Artist Fellowship. A finer recipient there could not be. Jim Woodring, Joe Sacco and Chris Ware were recipients of the same grant in 2006. Hooray for United States Artists!
Upcoming in MOME
Written by Eric Reynolds | Filed under Nate NealMomeJosh Simmons 15 Dec 2009 7:49 AM

2010 will mark the fifth year of our anthology MOME and we've got some good stuff lined up for the next few issues. We just sent MOME 18 (Spring 2010) to the printer and are already prepping MOME 19 (Summer 2010), and I thought I'd share the covers to both.

The MOME 18 cover is by Nate Neal, who delivers "The Neurotic Nexus of Creation," a 15-page explication of the creative process that calls to mind his "Reality Comics Quartet" from MOME 12. The MOME 19 cover is by Josh Simmons, and the issue will feature the first part of his psychedelic extravaganza "The White Rhinoceros," written by co-conspirator The Partridge In a Pear Tree.

I don't want to give up too much about either issue, but MOME 18 also includes the first new comic in several years by Dave Cooper, the MOME debuts of Tim Lane, Ivan Brun, Joe Daly, and Jon Adams, as well as returning stalwarts Lilli Carré, Ben Jones, Frank Santoro, Jon Vermilyea, Nicolas Mahler, Ted Stearn, Renée French, Conor O'Keefe, Derek Van Gieson, and T. Edward Bak.

MOME 19 will have some very exciting surprises, including an all-new, 12-page story by some guy named Gilbert Hernandez, as well as returning regulars such as Dash Shaw, Tom Kaczynski, and Olivier Schrauwen. Plus, an amazing 21-page debut by Seattle cartoonist DJ Bryant, riffing on an old horror comic by Steve Ditko.

I recently calculated that with MOME 18, we have now published over 2000 pages of comics in the series over the last four and half years (2109, to be exact). By our count, this may be a record for an English-language alternative comics anthology (and no, I'm not counting Dark Horse Presents).

UPDATE: Olivier Schrauwen has a preview page up from his 25-page story for MOME 19 here. This guy is amazing.

That's right, choose any two cartoon characters and the artist will create an 8" x 10" Custom Jumble on heavyweight manila drawing paper, featuring both of your favorites in an exclusively-styled combination. I own one of these and you should, too. Contact him through his website.

This is the last Prison Pit Book Two preview you're gonna get for awhile. Savor it, and look for the book next summer.
