100-page color 6.625" x 10.5" hardcover • $14.99

Author Joe Sacco promises that, in the vein of underground comix like ZAP or Weirdo, "Bumf will go where it needs to go, and do what it needs to do." Though Sacco is world-famous for his serious, journalistic books like Palestine, Safe Area Gorazde, and Footnotes in Gaza, Bumf promises to echo back to his earlier days as a satirist and underground cartoonist. Bumf is a project that Sacco has been working on in between larger projects like Footnotes in Gaza, indulging his love of satire and cartooning. Often puerile, disgusting, and beyond redemption, Sacco apologizes in advance, saying he couldn't help himself. "They expect better things from me. They’ll never put me on a stamp now."

The latest book from the author of THE HIDDEN and DELPHINE contains the epic 115-page tale of a modern master-criminal. Following in the bloody footsteps of super-fiends such as Fantomas, Fu Manchu, or Professor Moriarty, Super-Enigmatix is ruthless, cunning, and thoroughly evil. His only goal is to spread fear and cause chaos — but does he want to destroy civilization, or save it? Not even his loyal army of female commandos can guess his real motives, or his true identity. The fast-moving "picture story" is told with sly humor and all the mayhem is depicted in Sala's trademark colorful watercolor washes and sharp, detailed line-work. Also included in this collection are three shorter stories, appearing in print for the first time, from Richard Sala's archive of strange and offbeat tales!

An Evening of Spontaneous Creation with James McNew, Bill Frisell, and Jim Woodring!
Written by janice headley | Filed under Jim Woodringevents 1 Oct 2014 9:13 AM

James McNew, Bill Frisell, and Jim Woodring!!! Seriously, what more do I need to say?

I've written before about the creative synergy between our dear Uncle Jim and McNew and his band, Yo La Tengo. They've collaborated before on everything from CD illustrations to tattoos to plastic figurines of the band... yet, somehow, they had never collaborated ON STAGE.

This Sunday, October 5th, this monstruous injustice will be put to rest at Seattle's Town Hall.  McNew will be joined by legendary jazz guitarist Bill Frisell, who collaborated with Woodring himself on the (now sold out) 2002 "children's" book, Trosper.  Together, these two musical madmen will create catastrophic beauty with an "in-the-moment collaboration."

Inspired by the music, Woodring will create his otherworldly artwork, projected on a screen for everyone to witness unfolding. TL; DR? Simply put, minds will be blown

Tickets are a ridiculously cheap $5. If ever there were a time to take advantage of the insanity of artists, this is it. Doors open at 6:30 PM, and the Fantagraphics Bookstore crew will have Jim's stunning books in stock. (And Jim reports he'll have some of those limited-edition hard-to-find Yo La Tengo Presspop Dolls with him!)

This once-in-a-lifetime (oh, fine, maybe it'll happen again someday) performance begins at 7:30 PM. The beautiful, historical Town Hall is located at 1119 8th Avenue.

To celebrate the resounding critical and commercial success of the first two volumes of Ed Piskor's unprecedented history of Hip Hop, we are offering the two books in a mind-blowingly colorful slipcase, drawn and designed by the artist, featuring exclusive all-new cover art on each volume. As if that's not enough, in addition to the two books and the slipcase itself, Piskor has drawn a 24-page comic book — Hip Hop Family Tree #300 — specifically for this boxed set that elegantly reflects the confluence of hip hop and comics, which was never more apparent in the early 1990s than with the famous Spike Lee-directed Levi Jeans commercial starring Rob Liefeld, who went on to create Youngblood and co-found Image Comics, not to mention ending up on the radar of gangster rapper Eazy E. Piskor tells this story as a perfect parody/pastiche/homage to ’90s Image comics.

Tim Lane continues his exploration of the Great American Mythological Drama that began with his first book, the critically acclaimed Abandoned Cars. This collection of stories is broadly linked together by the experience of wandering — both literally and figuratively. With compelling verisimilitude, the lives of his characters are depicted by way of rich mixtures of obscure myths and documented facts, dreams and reality, belief and disbelief, throughout a haunted landscape populated by the ghosts of a complex and rich fictional tapestry. You'll witness a young man's dubious quest to discover the myth of the protagonist from an obscure vintage comic strip; encounter sociopathic hobos in boxcars and misled young men whose facial pores sprout worms and who throw up babies into gas station toilets; visit modern "Hoovervilles"; and experience the life and death of an undocumented immigrant bookstore doorman, former boxer, and expert hustler.

One of the world's best veteran cartoonists is joining forces at Cosmic Comics with some of the world's best cartoonists from the internet this Saturday, October 4th from noon-4pmSimon HanselmannMichael DeForge and Patrick Kyle will be signingalongside 30 year comics veteran Gilbert Hernandez of Love and Rockets. Gilbert's newest collection, Luba and Her Family, follows the matriarch as she moves her family north to the U.S. when Palomar gets leveled by an earthquake.

Luba and Her Family Gilbert
Nearing the end of their world tour, Simon is celebrating the release of his 'stoner tragedy' Megahex, made popular on his Girl Mountain Tumblr, now available in a sexy hardback from Fantagraphics. Poverty, misanthropy, depression all fogged up in substance abuse grace these watercolored pages but you'll still be rolling in tears laughing so hard by the end of it. Meanwhile, Michael DeForge is continuing his long line of one-person short story anthologies, Lose #6 (first published online 5 years ago) out from Koyama Press. Often hailed as the next Daniel Clowes, DeForge is a prolific cartoonist with only more great ink to flow from his pen. Also from the Toronto-based publisher, illustrator and cartoonist Patrick Kyle is signing his newest comic, Distance Mover, a collection of sci-fi stories featuring the improbable vehicle of the same name that moves a Mr. Earth across the world.

So bring your comics and some of your favorite gambling game suggestions for the guys.

Written by Sonia Lei | Filed under previewsDon RosaDisneyComing Attractions 30 Sep 2014 4:15 PM

In the first adventure that Don Rosa takes us on in Walt Disney's Uncle Scrooge and Donald Duck: Return to Plain Awful, titled "The Crocodile Collector," Uncle Scrooge enlists Donald Duck and the intrepid trio, Huey, Dewey, and Louie, on a quest to find the fabled sacred crocodiles of Emperor Nero.

This goose—er—crocodile chase takes the ducks from the bustling capitol city of Cairo, Egypt to the fetid, bug-infested swamps north of Lake Victoria, Africa. To quote Donald Duck: "Oh, my aching duckfeathers!"
