meltdown

Saturday, July 19th

To call this a mega signing might actually be selling this Meltdown Comic event short. Their week of preview events leading up to San Diego Comic-con is kicking off with a signing that literally has too many people to fit on a marquee, and they're not even done adding more comic super stars!

But here are just a few of the people you can expect to chit chat with this Saturday:

Jaime HernandezGilbert Hernandez, Gerard Way, Becky Cloonan, Jim Mahfood, Eric Esquivel, Joshua Hale Fialkov, Felipe Smith, Hannah Partlow, Tom Pinchuk, and the best up-and-coming comic talent, Natalie Hernandez. Plus many others yet to be added.

Both Hernandez bros have some new books out that have been blowing up the critics lists and quickly becoming fan favorites. Pack up your copies of The Love Bunglers, and Luba and Her Family, and head on down to Meltdown Comics. If you're going to SDCC, this will give you a little preview of what's to come, and if you're not going, this will ensure you get to hang out with some of the best. Everyone's welcome!

Party starts at 2 pm. LA. Meltdown Comics. Be there.

Saturday, July 12th

Just because it's last minute, doesn't mean it's not worth the mention, because according to this flyer, it's going to be the GREATEST SIGNING OF ALL TIME.

Beloved Chapel Hill Comics is switching ownership hands, but before current owner, Andrew passes off the keys, he's going out with a bang. Come help support local comic books stores, artists and the industry by hanging out with some of the best in the biz. We're patiently waiting for the second volume of Ed Piskor's New York Times BestsellerHip Hop Family Tree. But in the mean time, he's taking the time to sign books with fellow comic artists Jim Rugg, who contributed to Mome Vol. 22, Tom Scioli, and Adhouse publisher, Chris Pitzer.

Celebrate the old, ring in the new, and party with Piskor and the gang (the name of my new hip-hop crew).

Party kicks off at 6 pm! With food!

Thursday, July 10th

Beloved multi-media Brooklyn gallery, Cinders, is celebrating 10 years of not just existing, but of bringing a community together through their diverse group of artists. This special anniversary show, A Decade of Decadunce (+10 pun points), features an impressive list of artists who have helped shape them over the past 10 years into the non-profit art organization they are today. Check out this lineup:

Maya Hayuk, Brian Chippendale, Diane Barcelowsky, Allyson Mellberg, Jocko Weyland, Jungil Hong, Esther Pearl Watson, Kyle Ranson, Blok, Jim Tozzi, Travis Egedy, Matt Furie, Anna Hellsgard, Ron Rege Jr., and Ric Ocasek (lead singer of the CARS!), plus many many many more. This list just scratches the surface.

Ron Rege Jr. was also the gallery's June Artist of the Month (an excellent choice), and you should read their interview with him to hear more about his airy, and magical cartooning style.

Opening reception party kicks off Thursday, July 10th, from 7-10 pm, with DJ Dave Potes, at the Dossier Outpost on the South Street Seaport in Manhattan. A beautiful, colorful building that's the perfect location for a beautiful Thursday night party!

Park City, UT: Kevin Avery Signing

Saturday, July 12

Paul Nelson was a pioneer of music criticism and discovering acts of immeasurable talent during the '60s and '70s; shinning a dirty light on acts like Bruce Springsteen and Neil Young.  When he mysteriously stepped out of his own journalistic spotlight, he left behind hundreds of unanswered questions and as many writings. Kevin Avery has spent years trying to answer those questions and does so through hundereds of interviews with those who knew Nelson best: friends, family, and artists, culminating in the anthology/biography, Everything is an Afterthought: The Life and Writing of Paul Nelson.

On Saturday, July 12th from 6 to 7:30 pm you can catch up with Kevin Avery at the lovely, and esteemed, Dolly's Bookstore of Park City, Utah, complete with the cutest bookstore kitties you ever did see. (Bookstore cats are only second to bodega cats.)

Avery will also be signing copies of his book Conversations with Clint: Paul Nelson's Interviews with Clint Eastwood, 1979-1983

Your Guide to Pride (Comics)

Seattle loves parades. But what we love more than parades is PRIDE! In downtown Seattle this Sunday, June 29th, you can found yourself doused with glitter, families, and suggestive floats. (The gay goth one is my favorite). We at Fantagraphics have always been committed to publishing stories of the daily lives, the complexities, the struggles, and the joys that have been represented through our diverse artists, drawing light on an ever-changing LGBTQ community.

Looking to dip your toes, or dive head first into our collection that's as diverse at the people who created them? We've got a spectacular list to fit any book lover!

No Straight Lines

  • The most comprehensive collection of queer comics covers FORTY YEARS of struggle, hope, pain, sex, identity, and love. Edited by Justin Hall, No Straight Lines embraces history, culture and the future in this impressive anthology.

 b&w   mags
  • One of the most interesting love stories I have ever come across. An autobiographical memoir about a professor who befriends, and then falls in love, with a man living on the streets. Full of tenderness, and enduring partnership admist the most unlikely of circumstances.

wandering   drunken

  • Being a tween is hard enough, but when you add gender identity, and transsexualism to the normal pains of puberty, you get a story that is loving and heartbreaking. Written with poetic sensitivity in spades, you might want to read this series with a tissue, or ten.

 7   thom

  • Eisner nominee, GLBT Roundtable selection, and New York Times Bestseller. Artist David Wojnarowicz did not go silently into the night when he penned his story of living, and eventually dying of AIDS in NYC. This book is a testament to Wojnarowicz fierce advocacy for marginalized voices to be heard by friends, family, and the government.

And our newest addition: Wuvable Oaf! Which is now available for pre-order
