The Accidental Love God
Written by Larry Reid | Filed under staffPeter BaggeJessica AbelFantagraphics historyFantagraphics BookstoreeventsDame Darcy 9 May 2014 12:42 PM

About the time I began working for Fantagraphics as marketing and promotions director, Peter Bagge ran a contest in the third issue of his wildly popular Hate comic book. "Win a Date With Stinky" urged female readers to "Send in one or more glamorful photos and/or drawings of yourself" and "Explain in 25 words or less why you're worthy of Stinky's affection." What self-respecting woman, I wondered, would enter a contest to win a date with a comic book character? Named Stinky? I was about to find out. I spent several months acting as Peter's unwitting accomplice on a series of surreptitious "Stinky Dates" that saw me playing Leonard the Love God opposite lovely and talented young artists like Jessica Abel and Dame Darcy. This buffoonery was documented in the pages of Hate, much to amusement of my wonderful wife, not to mention the fashionable alternative rock band Babes in Toyland. (Don't ask.)

Hate_3Hate_9

Like countless members of my generation, Peter Bagge's Hate was a funny and affectionate chronicle of my misspent youth. Beyond that, his work played a pivotal role in shaping the ideology of a youth movement that penetrated popular culture on a global scale. His comix have enriched our lives in ways we can only now begin to appreciate.

Join us in celebrating the many accomplishments of this incredibly gifted artist on Saturday, May 10 at Fantagraphics Bookstore & Gallery as we debut the latest, and perhaps final chapter of the Buddy Bradley story, Buddy Buys a Dump. See you all at 6:00 PM on Saturday.

Fantagraphics Bookstore & Gallery Presents Peter Bagge

Join us at Fantagraphics Bookstore & Gallery this Saturday at 6:00 PM to celebrate the publication of Peter Bagge’s new book with a show of original drawings, book signing and live music. The evening also marks the 10th anniversary of our retail partner Georgetown Records.

Peter Bagge’s Hate has chronicled the misadventures of Buddy Bradley and his crew of lovable losers since the formative period of the grunge era. Buddy Buys a Dump contains the last nine issues of Hate Annual and completes the current story arc with a new twenty-page conclusion, many of them on display for the occasion.

Visitors to the bookstore are invariably greeted with a delightfully esoteric soundtrack courtesy of Georgetown Records. Over the course of the last decade, they’ve earned a reputation as one of the region’s premier purveyors of vintage vinyl specializing in punk, prog, goth, garage, psychedelic, international, and other rare recordings. Come celebrate their 10th anniversary with Peter Bagge and live music by Kelli Frances Corrado and The Hinges.

These events coincide with the festive Georgetown Art Attack featuring colorful visual and performing arts presentations throughout the historic neighborhood. Fantagraphics Bookstore & Gallery is located at 1201 S. Vale Street, just minutes south of downtown Seattle. Open daily 11:30 to 8:00 PM, Sundays until 5:00 PM. Phone 206.658.0110.

A 10-Year Record!

Georgetown Records

Visitors to Fantagraphics Bookstore & Gallery are invariably greeted with a delightfully esoteric soundtrack courtesy of our retail partners at Georgetown Records. For seven and a half years, they've cheerfully accommodated our nerdy comix parties, panels, and presentations. Come celebrate their 10th anniversary this Saturday, May 10 from 6:00 to 9:00 PM, coinciding with Peter Bagge's Buddy Buys a Dump exhibition and book signing.

Over the course of the last decade, Georgetown Records has earned a reputation as one of the region's premier purveyors of vintage vinyl, specializing in punk, prog, goth, garage, psychedelic, international, and other rare recordings. It's a popular stop for both local and touring musicians as well as other cultural connoisseurs.

The party on Saturday features live music by Kelli Frances Corrado and The Hinges. It begins a series of events commemorating ten years of contributions to Seattle's music milieu. The Fantagraphics family congratulates our colleagues at Georgetown Records and encourages our customers to patronize their awesome store.

Support Your Local Shops on Free Comic Book Day!

The comix community celebrates the colorful diversity of our often-marginalized medium this Saturday, May 3 with Free Comic Book Day. In a show of appreciation unique to our industry, publishers and retailers go to great expense to make exclusive editions available at no charge to consumers. The goal is to attract new customers or introduce regular readers to books they might otherwise overlook. With that noble intention in mind, allow us to suggest that Free Comic Book Day in no way prevents patrons from purchasing comics on Saturday.

It would be wonderful to see comic book enthusiasts emulate the example of music fans on Record Store Day, when thousands of people flock to independent record retailers and stock up on product in a remarkable display of affection for their favorite shops. Your local comic book stores deserve similar support. So enjoy the free comic books and remember to purchase a few as well.

If you're near Seattle, complete your Free Comic Book Day adventure at Fantagraphics Bookstore & Gallery where we'll be hosting a tasty Intruder barbecue from 2:00 to 5:00 PM with hot dogs, refreshments, of course, and free comix.

Fantagraphics Bookstore & Gallery Presents Peter Bagge

Seattle cartoonist Peter Bagge, one of the founding fathers of the alternative comix movement, returns with another chapter in the continuing saga of his signature character, Buddy Bradley. Fantagraphics Bookstore & Gallery celebrates the publication of Buddy Buys a Dump with a show of original drawings, a book signing, and music performance on Saturday, May 10 from 6:00 to 8:00 PM.

Peter Bagge’s Hate has chronicled the misadventures of Buddy Bradley and his crew of lovable losers since the formative period of the grunge era. His observations went beyond satire to help define the attitude and aesthetics of the most significant youth movement of the 1990s. Buddy Buys a Dump is the third collection of Buddy stories from Bagge’s Hate comic book serial. It contains material from the last nine issues of Hate Annual and completes the current story arc with a new twenty-page conclusion.

The opening reception features a display of original art from the book. Bagge will be present to sign copies of recent publications. Musical entertainment will be provided by Seattle singer-songwriter Kelli Frances Corrado at 7:30 PM. This event coincides with the colorful Georgetown Art Attack featuring visual and performing arts presentations throughout the historic arts community. Don’t miss this opportunity to celebrate an impressive work by one of America’s most important and influential cartoonists.

Music lovers everywhere support their local independent record retailers on Record Store Day this Saturday. In recognition of the pivotal role played by record shops in the music industry, many labels release special limited edition recordings and merchandise, attracting throngs of shoppers to their neighborhood stores.

RSD_Georgetown

The Pacific Northwest chapter of the Recording Academy teams with Georgetown Records and Fantagraphics Bookstore to commemorate Record Store Day with Grammy Breakout Sessions: Vinyl Vault. This fascinating program features two of Seattle's most prominent musician/producers, Jack Endino and Steve Fisk, playing records and discussing their creative process. Endino is widely credited with engineering the "Seattle Sound" that influenced generations of musicians. In addition to performing with countless bands, he has produced records by groups like Nirvana, Soundgarden, Mudhoney, Tad, and The Sonics. Fisk has worked with eclectic acts like Nirvana, Soundgarden, Screaming Trees, Joan Osborne, Beat Happening, Low, Reggie Watts, Tangerine Dream, and many more, as well as playing keyboards with Pigeonhed and Peter Bagge's Can You Imagine? Both of these artists have been closely affiliated with Seattle's storied Sub Pop Records, so it's fitting they will be joined by label founder Bruce Pavitt spinning records throughout the evening.

The festivities begin at 6:30 PM on April 19 at Georgetown Records and Fantagraphics Bookstore, located at 1201 S. Vale Street in the heart of Seattle's historic Georgetown arts community. Arrive early to peruse the record bins, and maybe pick up a signed copy of Pavitt's wonderful memoir Experiencing Nirvana: Grunge in Europe, 1989. Wherever you are, go out and support your local record store on Saturday.

Intruder 10 postcard

The Intruder cartoonist collective is at the forefront of Seattle’s flourishing comix community. On Saturday, April 12 from 6:00 to 9:00 PM, Fantagraphics Bookstore & Gallery celebrates the publication of the 10th issue of the Intruder anthology ("The flagship anthology of Seattle's comics boom" – The Stranger) with a lively party including an art exhibition, music performance, and book signing.

The Intruder is a free quarterly tabloid featuring an eclectic group of contributors from the fields of comix, illustration, fine art, and graphic design. Issue #10 includes the work of Max Clotfelter, Aidan Fitzgerald, Billis Helg, Ben Horak, Tim Miller, John Ohannesian, Marc Palm, Darin Shuler, James Stanton, Tom Van Deusen, and more. In addition to the debut of the latest Intruder, original art, prints, and handcrafted books by these artists and others will on display at the bookstore though May 7.

The Intruder reception will be preceded from 4:00 to 6:00 PM by Michael O’Driscoll presenting his new self-published comic, Bedbug’s Book of Wisdom. At 7:00 PM, Georgetown Records and Fantagraphics Bookstore welcome a musical performance by Lori Goldston and Kyle Hanson. Goldston is Stranger Genius honoree who has performed with countless bands, including new Rock and Roll Hall of fame inductees Nirvana. Lori and Kyle will perform songs from their recently released album. This event coincides with the colorful Georgetown Art Attack featuring challenging contemporary art presentations throughout the historic district (including an arty Easter egg hunt.)

No Apologies Necessary
Written by Larry Reid | Filed under rockFantagraphics historyFantagraphics Bookstore 3 Apr 2014 1:10 PM

It's with sadness and a certain measure of pride that we commemorate the tragic loss of Kurt Cobain 20 years ago. Sadness in that many of our staff had the honor of associating with this brilliant artist; pride in knowing that his work impacted popular culture on a global scale. Nirvana's accomplishments will be recognized on April 10 with their formal induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Those of us that were here will never forget the time Fantagraphics staff was invited backstage for their triumphant return in front of fifteen thousand fans at the Seattle Coliseum in September of 1992. Prior to that, most of us had only seen them play in little bars and dance halls around town. The stage alone that night was bigger than many of those early venues!

Please note that cellist Lori Goldston, seen on this MTV Unplugged video, will perform with Kyle Hanson on Saturday, April 12 at Fantagraphics Bookstore & Gallery for the opening reception of the Intruder 10 art exhibition. Come as you are.

Kurt Cobain. February 20, 1967 - April 5, 1994.
