No Apologies Necessary
Written by Larry Reid | Filed under rockFantagraphics historyFantagraphics Bookstore 3 Apr 2014 1:10 PM

It's with sadness and a certain measure of pride that we commemorate the tragic loss of Kurt Cobain 20 years ago. Sadness in that many of our staff had the honor of associating with this brilliant artist; pride in knowing that his work impacted popular culture on a global scale. Nirvana's accomplishments will be recognized on April 10 with their formal induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Those of us that were here will never forget the time Fantagraphics staff was invited backstage for their triumphant return in front of fifteen thousand fans at the Seattle Coliseum in September of 1992. Prior to that, most of us had only seen them play in little bars and dance halls around town. The stage alone that night was bigger than many of those early venues!

Please note that cellist Lori Goldston, seen on this MTV Unplugged video, will perform with Kyle Hanson on Saturday, April 12 at Fantagraphics Bookstore & Gallery for the opening reception of the Intruder 10 art exhibition. Come as you are.

Intruder 10 postcard

Intruder Alert! Talented Emerging Seattle Cartoonists Featured at Fantagraphics Bookstore & Gallery on April 12.

The Pacific Northwest enjoys a long tradition as a breeding ground for innovative illustrators and cartoonists. At no time has this been more evident than now. The Intruder comix collective is at the forefront of this new movement. On Saturday, April 12, Fantagraphics Bookstore & Gallery celebrates the publication of the 10th issue of the Intruder anthology with a lively party including an art exhibition, music performance, and book signing.

The Intruder is a free quarterly tabloid featuring an eclectic group of contributors from the fields of comix, illustration, fine art, and graphic design. Issue #10 features the work of Max Clotfelter, Aidan Fitzgerald, Billis Helg, Ben Horak, Tim Miller, John Ohannesian, Marc Palm, Darin Shuler, James Stanton, Tom Van Deusen, and more. In addition to the debut of the latest Intruder, original art, prints, and handcrafted books by these artists and others will on display at the bookstore though May 7, 2014.

The Intruder reception will be preceded from 4:00 to 6:00 PM by Michael O’Driscoll presenting his new self-published comic, Bedbug’s Book of Wisdom. This limited edition hardcover follows the exploits of O’Driscoll’s pesky protagonist, cleverly mimicking the format of a children’s book. Additionally, Georgetown Records and Fantagraphics Bookstore welcome a musical performance by Lori Goldston and Kyle Hanson. Cellist Goldston is Stranger Genius honoree who has performed with Nirvana, Earth, and countless others. She’ll be joined on accordion by frequent collaborator Hanson performing songs from their recently released album. This event coincides with the colorful Georgetown Art Attack featuring challenging visual and performing arts presentations throughout the historic district.

Join us on Saturday, March 8, at Fantagraphics Bookstore & Gallery as we celebrate the publication of Tony Millionaire's Sock Monkey Treasury with an art exhibition, book signing, and music concert.

Tony Millionaire's Sock Monkey is one of the great all-ages comics of the new millennium. The precocious sock monkey Uncle Gabby and his innocent pal Mr. Crow are the heroes of this endearing new collection. The festive show on Saturday, March 8, from 6:00 to 9:00 PM features 15 original Millionaire drawings and music by Ashley Eriksson. As a child in Los Angeles, Eriksson sang on the Ren and Stimpy Christmas Album; as an adult she sings "Island Song," the closing credits for Cartoon Network's cult-sensation Adventure Time. On Saturday she’ll sing from her recent K Records release Colours.

"In his surrealist impulse and draftsman's brio, Millionaire is the closest thing we have to George Herriman of Krazy Kat." – John Hodgman, The New York Times

"Like Joe Strummer, like Prince Buster and more grandly, John Wayne, Mark Twain and Lewis Carroll, some aliases simply announce the true personality and imaginative potential of the bearer. Tony Millionaire is no exception..." – Elvis Costello

"Tony Millionaire is worth a thousand Tony Thousandaires." – Conan O'Brien

"I think Tony Millionaire can only do important things." – Dave Eggers

The Mad World of Virgil Partch at Fantagraphics Bookstore this Saturday!
Written by Larry Reid | Filed under Virgil PartchFantagraphics Bookstoreevents 7 Feb 2014 1:24 AM

Vip: The Mad World of Virgil Partch

Fantagraphics Bookstore & Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition by Virgil Partch, one of mid-century America’s most influential humorists. Vip: The Mad World of Virgil Partch celebrates the legacy of this notorious cartoonist. A display of art and artifacts from the book opens Saturday, February 8 from 6:00 to 9:00 PM.

Virgil Partch burst onto the pages of the nation’s magazines with his captivating cartoons virtually overnight. His irreverent observations inspired a new breed of post-war comedians and cartoonists. Known by his signature, “Vip,” his work adorned books, advertisements, album covers, beer cans, cocktail napkins, and other accoutrements of mid-century American culture. The show at Fantagraphics Bookstore will demonstrate the diverse range of Partch’s appealing aesthetic.

The opening this Saturday coincides with the festive Georgetown Art Attack, featuring colorful visual and performing arts presentations throughout the historic arts community. Fantagraphics Bookstore & Gallery is located at 1201 S. Vale, only minutes south of downtown Seattle. Open daily 11:30 to 8:00 PM, Sundays until 5:00 PM. Phone 206.658.0110.

Mark your calendars for Saturday, February 22 when we host a signing by talented young cartoonist Gregory Benton followed by an in-store session with original Fleetwood Mac guitarist and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame member Jeremy Spencer.

Famed Fleetwood Mac Guitarist Jeremy Spencer at Fantagraphics Bookstore/Georgetown Records!
Written by Larry Reid | Filed under rockFantagraphics Bookstoreevents 4 Feb 2014 4:18 PM

Visitors to the Gregory Benton signing on Saturday, February 22 are in for an unforgettable evening as Fantagraphics Bookstore and Georgetown Records host an in-store performance by celebrated blues musician Jeremy Spencer. An original member of Fleetwood Mac, Spencer was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1998. He played on the band's timeless early hits like "Black Magic Woman," "Albatross," "Oh Well," and countless others. He frequently fronted Fleetwood Mac, channeling legends like Elmore James and Elvis during their raucous live shows. Check out vintage Jeremy Spencer in Paris on New Year's Eve 1968.

Spencer will play songs from his recent International Record Store Day release Bend in the Road and the forthcoming Coventry Blue LP in advance of his show at the Columbia City Theater the following day. He's also an accomplished illustrator and cartoonist, as seen in his portraits of former band mates Mick Fleetwood, John McVie, and fellow blues guitarist Eric Clapton below. Spencer's original artwork will be on display for the occasion. Don't miss this amazing evening of art, comix, and music.
