Join us this Saturday, February 1 from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at Fantagraphics Bookstore & Gallery as rising star Julia Gfrörer signs her sensational new book Black Is the Color. The story of a castaway sailor’s attraction to a sinister mermaid examines the dubious value of maintaining dignity to the detriment of intimacy, and the erotic potential of the worst-case scenario. (The perfect Valentine’s gift, right?)

Saturday is also one of your last opportunities to see the enchanting Ron Regé, Jr. exhibition The Cartoon Utopia. Fantagraphics Bookstore is located at 1201 S. Vale Street in the heart of Seattle’s historic Georgetown industrial arts community. Open daily 11:30 to 8:00 PM, Sundays until 5:00 PM. Phone 206.658.0110.

Guantanamo Sketch Artist Janet Hamlin at Fantagraphics Bookstore on Saturday

Please join us in Georgetown at Fantagraphics Bookstore on Saturday, December 28 from 6:00 to 8:00 PM as we host a reception and book signing with Janet Hamlin. Her fascinating book, Sketching Guantanamo, captures the conditions faced by detainees in the makeshift island internment compound.

Journalists at Guantanamo were subject to draconian security measures. Courtroom photography was banned. As a result, Hamlin's deft imagery provides the only visual record of these unparalleled proceedings. According to The New York Times, "When future historians search back in time to 'Camp Justice' and the rigidly controlled, tightly censored terrorist trials in Guantánamo, Cuba, they will likely linger over the vivid courtroom sketches of Janet Hamlin." The Stranger declares, "This is important."

Fantagraphics Bookstore & Gallery is located at 1201 S. Vale Street (at Airport Way S.), only minutes from downtown Seattle. Open daily 11:30 to 8:00 PM, Sundays until 5:00 PM. Phone 206.658.0110.

An Appreciation of Palestine
Written by Larry Reid | Filed under Joe Sacco 24 Dec 2013 1:16 PM

Every year at this time, as much of the world turns its attention to momentous events in the small West Bank town of Bethlehem two millennia ago, I ritually read Joe Sacco’s Palestine. Sacco’s comic book serial was among the first projects I was asked to promote when I was hired as Fantagraphics marketing and promotions director. At the time, even referring to the occupied territories as Palestine was considered by many to be provocative.

Palestine

While the semantics of the discussion may have changed, the situation in Palestine has remained remarkably unchanged since Sacco visited the region and the first issue appeared two decades ago. In re-reading the Palestine collection each holiday season, I’m reminded how the promise of Peace on Earth remains elusive. And I renew my hope that a lasting peace will finally prevail in that troubled land.

The Cartoon Utopia

Fantagraphics Bookstore & Gallery is pleased to present The Cartoon Utopia, an exhibition and book signing with visionary cartoonist Ron Regé, Jr. opening Saturday, January 11 with a festive reception for the artist. The show continues through February 5, 2014.

In The Cartoon Utopia, Regé examines religious, mystical, and spiritual philosophies employing an imaginative narrative construct. The subject ideally suits the artist’s intriguing rendering technique. In the words of cartoonist Chris Ware, Regé is "One of a handful of cartoonists in the history of the medium to not only reinvent comics to suit his own idiosyncratic impulses and inspirations as an artist, but also to imbue it with his own peculiar, ever changing emotional energy. To me, he is unquestionably one of 'the greats.'"

The opening reception on Saturday, January 11 from 6:00 to 9:00 PM coincides with the colorful Georgetown Second Saturday Art Attack featuring challenging visual and performing arts presentations throughout the historic arts community. Fantagraphics Bookstore & Gallery is located at 1201 S. Vale Street, at the corner of Airport Way S. Open daily 11:30 to 8:00 PM, Sundays until 5:00 PM. Phone 206.658.0110.

Guantanamo Courtroom Sketch Artist Janet Hamlin at Fantagraphics Bookstore on December 28

Please join us at Fantagraphics Bookstore & Gallery on Saturday, December 28 from 6:00 to 8:00 PM as we host a reception and book signing with Janet Hamlin. Her fascinating book, Sketching Guantanamo, captures the conditions faced by detainees in the makeshift island internment compound. Hamlin served as the media pool sketch artist, and was among a handful of journalists to bear witness to the military tribunals of accused terrorists and “enemy combatants.” Neither sentimental nor didactic, Hamlin’s evocative drawings provide a revealing look at this enigmatic episode of American jurisprudence.

Journalists at Guantanamo were subject to draconian security measures. Their living and working conditions were arduous. Courtroom photography was banned. As a result, Hamlin’s deft imagery provides the only visual record of these unparalleled proceedings. Her work was subject to approval by not only the military authorities but also the defendants themselves. Hamlin boldly persevered, and her chronicle of this unprecedented period of American history is captivating.

This inspiring artist will appear on December 28 at an informal reception and book signing event at Fantagraphics Bookstore, located at 1201 S. Vale Street in the heart of Seattle’s historic Georgetown art community. We can’t wait to meet her.

Don't miss a minute of the action at Fantagraphics Bookstore & Gallery this holiday season. We kick off the fun on Saturday, December 7 with an extraordinary event featuring Sub Pop founder Bruce Pavitt. His new book, Experiencing Nirvana: Grunge in Europe, 1989 documents a pivotal period in late 20th century pop culture. In an improbable effort to attract international attention to the fledgling label, Sub Pop sent Nirvana, Mudhoney, and TAD to Europe. Pavitt chronicled the triumphant tour with candid observations and captivating images. Members of all three bands will attend this monumental party. Georgetown Records will have recently reissued vinyl from the featured groups and the bookstore will stock merchandise from last summer's Sub Pop Silver Jubilee. See you all this Saturday at 6:00.
