Johnny Ryan's Chicks with Dicks in Los Angeles This Saturday!
Written by janice headley | Filed under merchJohnny Ryanfashioneventsart shows 21 Jul 2013 10:25 PM

Johnny Ryan's Chicks with Dicks

Johnny Ryan will be whippin' it out with a solo art show, Johnny Ryan's Chicks With Dicks, opening this Saturday, July 27th at Мишка in Los Angeles!

Johnny Ryan's Chicks With Dicks will feature over sixty illustrations based on Jack Chick religious pamphlets from the 1960s onward. Our friends at Мишка explain: "For those who aren't historians on religious propaganda from fifty years ago, Jack Chick was an artist who published wild fire and brimstone comics about everyone going to hell for pretty much any minor offense. The comics read as a something an Evangelical Sunday school teacher might create, if they were possessed by the same demons that inspire death metal cover art. Obviously, Chick was very successful in saving souls of the damned, and obviously Johnny Ryan needed to recreate these images with dicks inserted throughout."

Johnny will also be debuting two exclusive new t-shirt designs, available only at this art show (pic swiped from his Instagram, below, and yes, he's back on there!):

Johnny Ryan's Chicks with Dicks

The opening reception for Johnny Ryan's Chicks With Dicks runs from 7:00 to 10:00 PM.  There'll be booze and some blasphemous tunes to really cement your place at the left hand of Beezlebub. There'll also be some regular Johnny Ryan pieces for sale as well, for all of you more pious folks. Мишка is located at 128 S. La Brea Ave. in Los Angeles.

Introducing the Second Elysian Jim Woodring Oddland Beer!
Written by janice headley | Filed under Jim Woodringart 18 Jul 2013 11:13 AM

Woodring Oddland Spiced Pear Beer

You may recall, our own Jim Woodring has teamed up with local beer experts Elysian Brewing Company for a new line of flavors dubbed the Oddland Series!  Here's how the collaboration works: Elysian comes up with a kooky flavor, runs it past Jim who sketches an idea; the recipe is tweaked, ingredients secured, and we're off to Oddland!

For the second flavor in the series, the brewers at Elysian present the Oddland Spiced Pear Ale, brewed with pears, Northwest premium 2-row and German Cara-hell malts, bittered with German Northern Brewer and finished with Yakima Cascade and Czech Saaz hops. Cumin and cardamom give it a heady and exotic touch, offsetting a drinkable and refreshing beer of 6.25% alcohol by volume.

Jim's label is also exotic and heady: a buxom songstress sitting on a rock, accompanying herself on a banjo, surrounded by blue alligators and many eyeballs. I'm drunk just looking at it!

Available in stores and on draft beginning July 15th, and at the Oregon Brewers Festival July 24-28 on the Willamette waterfront in Portland.

Lilli Carré and Paul Hornschemeier at the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago!

Bubbleheads by Paul Hornschemeier

In conjunction with the exhibit Modern Cartoonist: The Art of Daniel Clowes, the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago is hosting the all-day event Saturday Strip on Saturday, July 27th, showcasing all that is amazing in the world of independent comics, cartoons, and animation in their town!

Paul Hornschemeier will discuss the Chicago comics scene, and Lilli Carré will give tips on how to make your own mini-comics and animated films, alongside many other awesomely talented artists during panels and workshops.

You can also buy rare books and original artwork at a pop-up comic fair co-presented by the MCA Store and Chicago’s renowned Quimby’s Bookstore; enjoy screenings of animated short films programmed by the Eyeworks Festival of Experimental Animation; and take part in a large-scale, collaborative comic jam with local comic collective Trubble Club.

Phew! And all this awesome comics madness is FREE with museum admission, and you know you were gonna go see that Daniel Clowes exhibit for the second time anyway.

The Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago is located at 220 E Chicago Avenue, just one block east of Michigan Avenue, in the heart of the Magnificent Mile in downtown Chicago.

Fantagraphics Bookstore at the Anacortes Unknown Music Series!

Anacortes Unknown Music Series

Larry and Janice will be bringing the grungey-ness of the Fantagraphics Bookstore & Gallery to the loveliness of Anacortes, WA, for the Unknown Music Series! (What? The store is grunge-y! Have you looked at the floor? Don't!)  Now in its third year, this summer music & arts festival is co-organized by Northwest comic artist Geneviève Castrée.

On Saturday, July 20th and Sunday, July 21st, we'll be on-site during the festival's Small Press Book Fair, carrying a handful of our titles alongside some of the self-published mini-comix and zines that we carry at the store.

Not only will the festival host a book fair, but there will also be a rummage sale, a talent show, and, of course, tons of music from Mount Eerie, Ô Paon, LAKE, D+, Hive Dwellers, Karl Blau, Ashley Eriksson, and many, many more. (In fact, several of these artists have performed at our store!)

If you haven't been to Anacortes yet, this is the weekend to do it! Passes are on sale NOW, so don't hesitate, because the full passes usually sell out. Come by our table and say hi!

Ron Regé Jr. Cartoon Utopia Signing in Los Angeles!

The Cartoon Utopia

Named one of the “The Best Damn Comics of the Year” by Tom Kaczynski in Boing Boing‘s survey and one of “The Best Reads of 2012″ by musician Dan Willson in The Scotsman‘s survey, Ron Regé, Jr'The Cartoon Utopia was one of the most enchanting books of last year!

And he'll be signing and discussing his magnum opus on Wednesday, July 17th at The Last Bookstore in Los Angeles, starting at 7:00 PM!  Learn more about the magic from the man himself, and get yourself a copy of this psychedelic, philosophical tale.

The Last Bookstore (which is such a great name, by the way) is located at 453 S. Spring Street, but the entrance is on 5th Street. (Note: they are on the corner of Spring and 5th, which are both one-way streets.  Spring runs south, 5th runs west.)

Down with OPP*: Marble Season

Marble Season
* Other People's Publications
** Yeah, You Know Me.

It's summertime, and the perfect way to spend it is with the "semi-autobiographical" novel Marble Season by the great Gilbert Hernandez, published by our dear friends at Drawn & Quarterly!

Sure, I s'pose it takes place during the school year, but there's just something about Beto's stories of kids staging backyard plays, shooting marbles, and holding initiations for secret clubs that made me think of my own childhood and running around with no parents around during summer vacations!

Even though it was inspired by Gilbert's own childhood growing up in suburban 1960s California, anyone can relate to the family relationships, to crushes on classmates, and, of course, to the developing love of comic books! (Although I will admit I kept thinking, "Is that s'posed to be baby Jaime?! Is Mario the older brother with bad grades?! Hee!")

Get your copy of Marble Season along with many, many, many other Gilbert Hernandez titles at the Fantagraphics Bookstore & Gallery, located at 1201 S. Vale Street in Seattle's Georgetown district. Open daily 11:30 to 8:00 PM, Sundays until 5:00 PM. Phone: (206) 658-0110.

SODA POP announcement

Saturday, July 13th

Seattle, WA:  Everyone in the city will be in Georgetown for Sub Pop Records' Silver Jubilee, and the Fantagraphics Bookstore & Gallery will be launching its latest exhibit, SODA POP: Super Sugar Big Buzz, featuring art and artifacts from the formative years of Sub Pop by Lynda Barry, Peter Bagge, Charles Burns, Daniel Clowes, Owen Connell, Charles Peterson, Art Spiegelman, Jim Woodring, and more.

At 1:00 PM, Larry will host the panel “Pop Goes Seattle,” featuring some of the principals of the early Sub Pop period including founder Bruce Pavitt, cartoonist Peter Bagge, photographer Charles Peterson, and author and musician Danny Bland. At 2:00 PM, Bland will read passages from his debut novel In Case We Die, a fictional account of the grunge era in Seattle. Danny will be joined by guest reader Greg Dulli, who will later perform music outside the store. A limited number of advance copies of the book will be available at the reading. (more details)

The Lexicon of Sexicana with Esther Pearl Watson in Chicago!
Written by janice headley | Filed under eventsEsther Pearl Watson 3 Jul 2013 2:00 PM

What more do I even need to say here?!  The great Esther Pearl Watson + something called "The Lexicon of Sexicana" = your guaranteed attendance!

Oh, fine, more details...

The Ladydrawers Comics Collective is an unofficially affiliated group of women, men, transgender, and non-binary gender folk who research, perform, and publish comics and texts about how economics, race, sexuality, and gender impact the comics industry, other media, and our culture at large. This summer, they have launched SEX. MONEY. RACE. GENDER., an exhibition and workshop series at the A+D Gallery in Chicago.

And, on Thursday, July 11th from 5:30 PM to 7:30 PM, Esther will join sexual health educator and critic Terri Kapsalis to create a work exploring sexual health based on Mort Walker’s satirical look at comics devices for cartoonists, The Lexicon of Comicana. They’ll look at cartoons from around the world with an eye to the formation of bodies, sex, and gender in order to collect this international set of new cartoon symbols. Perhaps they’ll even coin new symbols and terms that will one day be found in dictionaries!

I told you, this event =  your guaranteed attendance. The A+D Gallery is located at 619 South Wabash, in the Art + Design Department at Columbia College Chicago.
