Listen, Whitey at the Life Enrichment Bookstore in Seattle Tonight!
Written by janice headley | Filed under Pat Thomasevents 20 Apr 2012 8:11 AM

Listen, Whitey! The Sights and Sounds of Black Power 1965-1975

It's a homecoming tonight for our editor Pat Thomas, who is back in town in the middle of his book tour for Listen, Whitey! The Sights and Sounds of Black Power 1965-1975!

And it's an extra special event, because it's also a benefit for the Life Enrichment Bookstore, Seattle's only Black-owned and operated bookstore. It has been in business for more than 17 years and has provided healing, history, support, and transformation through educational workshops, book clubs, and celebrations.

Join Pat there tonight, Friday, April 20th, from 6:00 to 9:00 PM! He will be doing a reprise of the tremendous multimedia presentation for Listen, Whitey! that he did at Washington Hall last month.

He will be joined by special guest, Aaron Dixon, the founder of the Seattle Black Panther Party back in the '60s.  His lecture will capture first-hand knowledge of the legendary Black Panthers, as well as Seattle’s contemporary African-American landscape.

Pat will also be joined by Dr. Maxine Mimms, founder of the Tacoma campus of Evergreen State College, which has provided the Black community of Tacoma the opportunity of the Evergreen college experience. In the early 1960’s, when she taught in Seattle, one of her students was Jimi Hendrix!

This is sure to be a very special night to benefit a very special bookstore!  Proceeds will help keep the Life Enrichment Bookstore thriving as a business and gathering place for village building activities. The Life Enrichment Bookstore is located at 5023 Rainier Avenue South in Seattle.

[UPDATE: The Seattle Weekly recommends it! –Ed.]

Still from In Suspense by Lilli Carre
Still from "In Suspense" by Lilli Carré

A "moving hold" is an animation technique that involves cycling several drawings of a stationary character, giving the drawn lines a sense of vibration and energy. And it's also the title of the Lilli Carré exhibit opening in Chicago this week!

Moving Holds opens this Friday, April 20th at Western Exhibitions. For the show, Carré has created three different sets of work that all incorporate moving holds, as an idea, a technique, or both. Don't miss the opening reception from 5:00 to 8:00 PM this Friday!

Western Exhibitions is located at 119 N Peoria St, 2A, in Chicago, IL.  Moving Holds runs through May 19, 2012.

12 Beers of the Apocalypse: Peste

This is one plague you'll want to be infested by!

Yes, the countdown continues with the latest beer in our 12 Beers of the Apocalypse series, a collaboration with our friends at the Elysian Brewing Company in Seattle.

And on this Saturday, April 21st, they'll introduce you to Peste, a chocolate chili ale sure to swarm your taste buds!  Peste will be available on cask, draft and in bottles with labels featuring the artwork of the great Charles Burns from his weirdly apocalyptic Black Hole series.

The official tapping of Peste begins at 2:00 PM, followed by a brand-new survival demo by Bryan and Co. at 4:00 PM.  There will also be Peste vaccinations and rat games... rat games!

So, join us at the Tangletown location of the Elysian Brewing Company, located at 2106 N 55th Street in Seattle!  And bring along your Apocalypse Beer Survival Guide to collect your next survival stamp. (It's never too late to start collecting -- we'll have more guides available at this event.) Fill your book with survival item stamps at our Apocalypse events throughout the year for an outstanding experience at our final End of the World Celebration on 12.20.12!

Remember: the end is BEER!

Editor Michel Gange at the Fantagraphics Bookstore & Gallery

Thank you to everyone who came out to the Fantagraphics Bookstore & Gallery for the opening reception of our new exhibit, “Young Romance: The Best of Simon & Kirby’s Romance Comics” with our special guest, Michel Gagné (seen above), editor of our brand new collection of the same title!

Young Romance at the Fantagraphics Bookstore & Gallery

Young Romance at the Fantagraphics Bookstore & Gallery

Gagné's interpretive exhibit features enlarged examples of Simon and Kirby’s romance comics, which he spent five years restoring for this gorgeous new collection.

Young Romance at the Fantagraphics Bookstore & Gallery

Michel gave a great presentation on his delicate restoration process, which you can watch below (YouTube link)! WARNING: I have to apologize -- I'm not the best filmographer, and as the sun was setting in Seattle, the lighting in the video gets kinda weird. But please don't let the lousy lighting detract from Michel's great presentation -- it's really fascinating to hear how he cleaned up all those old images and restored them for this book!

Jack Kirby original art at the Fantagraphics Bookstore & Gallery

Also, our exhibit features an original Jack Kirby page from 1967's "Fantastic Four #65," thanks to Gary Groth, of course!

“Young Romance: The Best of Simon & Kirby’s Romance Comics” will be available for viewing through May 9, 2012, and you can get the book any ol' time! If you can't make it to Seattle, check out more photos of the exhibit at the Fantagraphics Flickr! The Fantagraphics Bookstore & Gallery is located at 1201 S. Vale St. (at Airport Way S.) just minutes from downtown Seattle. Open daily 11:30 to 8:00 PM, Sundays until 5:00. Phone 206.658.0110.
