Written by janice headley | Filed under Monte Schulzevents 9 Apr 2012 11:20 AM

The Big Town by Monte Schulz

Author Monte Schulz is bringing The Big Town to the big town of San Francisco on Tuesday, April 10th!

A novel of the Jazz Age, The Big Town is the story of a failed businessman whose dreams of prosperity hinge on the secret proposition of a millionaire industrialist and a dangerous relationship he finds with a poor orphan girl chasing love in the great American metropolis.

Join Monte for a signing, starting at 7:00 PM at the Modern Times Bookstore Collective [ 2919 24th Street ].  And, we're pleased to announce that Modern Times invests 10% of the total sales on all events books to community organizations, so not only will you get to meet an engaging storyteller, but you'll also be helping support an organization working towards social justice in San Francisco's Mission District!

T Edward Bak Talking at the Portland Central Library!

T Edward Bak Talking at the Multnomah County Library!

I could listen to Mome-vet T Edward Bak talk for hours, and if you live in Portland, OR, you can have the less time-intensive honor on Tuesday, April 24th!

The Portland Central Library is proud to present "Cartoonists Talking," an evening event in conjunction with the Stumptown Comics Fest!

Bak (or "Tebs," as I like to call him) will deliver a presentation on WILD MAN: The Strange Journey and Fantastic Account of the Naturalist Georg Wilhelm Steller, which was serialized in Mome. The artist has conducted his own research in Southeast Alaska and the Aleutian archipelago, as well as St. Petersburg (Russian Federation) where he recently delivered presentations of his work for this ongoing project.

He'll be joined by artist Vera Brosgol for the event. "Cartoonists Talking" is from 6:30-7:45 PM at the Portland Central Library  [ 801 S.W. 10th Avenue ]!

Fantagraphics artist Ivan Brunetti

The Art Insitute of Chicago is holding a panel on "Comic Art and Fine Art," and who better to speak on that than our own Ivan Brunetti!

Join Ivan this Thursday, April 12th, along with fellow panelists Neal Adams, Geofrey Darrow, and J.J. Sedelmaier (YES! Saturday TV Funhouse!). They'll be discussing the history and future of this popular -- and populist -- art form. Richard Holland, co-founder of Bad at Sports podcast moderates.

The panel starts at 6:00 PM in the Rubloff Auditorium of the Art Insitute of Chicago [ 111 South Michigan Avenue, Chicago ]. Free with museum admission and for students with ID. "Comic Art and Fine Art" is held in advance for their major summer exhibition, Roy Lichtenstein: A Retrospective.

Editor Pat Thomas is bringin' it all back home with a signing and discussion at Booksmith in San Francisco this Tuesday, April 10th!

Pat was living in the Oakland area nearby when he began researching this project, and he discovered rare recordings of speeches, interviews, and music by noted activists Huey Newton, Bobby Seale, Elaine Brown, and others that form the framework of Listen, Whitey! The Sights and Sounds of Black Power 1965-1975.

Their friends from down the street, Amoeba Music, will be on hand to sell copies of the companion soundtrack album on Light in the Attic Records!

Paul Karasik Summer Workshop at the Center for Cartoon Studies

Take a master class from a man of class this summer: our editor extraordinaire Paul Karasik is teaching at the Center for Cartoon Studies in White River Junction, Vermont!

During the week-long on-campus workshop, students will participate in lectures, collaborative exercises, book discussion sessions, events, and group critiques, with the goal of producing the first draft of a longer comics project.

During the next 8 weeks, students will develop and refine their work through online collaboration with faculty and peers, and complete comprehensive final drafts of their projects.

The Master Class in Comics Narrative is taught by Eisner-winning cartoonist and experienced comics educator Paul Karasik, in conjunction with CCS instructors. In the words of Art Spiegelman, “Paul has a kind of intelligence combined with earnestness that comes from someplace deep, not a recipe book. He is very, very, very intelligent.”

You will leave this class a stronger cartoonist than when you entered.

This fantastic experience goes from August 20-24th on campus, and then continues from August 27-October 19th online. To find out more about registration, visit our friends at www.cartoonstudies.org.

Students at The Center for Cartoon Studies will have a chance to learn from the best, as our own Gary Groth is heading to White River Junction, Vermont for their annual Industry Day!

It kicks off tomorrow, Wednesday, April 4th, with a Pizza Party with Gary in the Colodny classroom! The party runs from 7:00 to 9:00 PM, and at 7:30 PM, Gary will regale the guests with "an evening of insight and wisdom," so say our friends at CCS. It's Gary and it's pizza -- that's a surefire recipe for a great night!

And then Thursday, April 5th marks Industry Day, a chance for students to have their portfolios looked at by the best in the business, while the publishers get a chance to see the future of the comics industry and know what talent to look out for. Gary will be joined by fellow industry professionals Judith Hansen, Annie Koyama, Heidi MacDonald, and Terry Nantier.

Industry Day is only open to students of The Center for Cartoon Studies, so I'm not even gonna bother giving you directions, 'cause you should know where your school is already!!! Get to class!!!
