Written by janice headley | Filed under Lilli Carréevents 8 Dec 2011 9:32 AM

Lilli Carre exhibit in Chicago

The cartoonist Lilli Carré has an exhibit opening tonight at the Ralph Arnold Fine Arts Annex in Chicago, entitled... Lilli Carré, Cartoonist.  It's so apropos!

But the exhibit also spotlights Lilli's animation work, as a series of short animated films she describes as “moving drawings” will be projected on the windows facing Sheridan Road.  Inside, you'll find a collection of Lilli's recent string drawing pieces, along with some books and comics.

The free reception goes from 5:00 to 6:30 PM tonight, and you should be able to make an online reservation here.  Loyola University Chicago's Ralph Arnold Fine Arts Annex is located at 1131 W. Sheridan. And the exhibit will be up until January 21, 2012!

33 Days with Pat Thomas This Saturday
Written by janice headley | Filed under Pat Thomasevents 7 Dec 2011 12:21 PM

Listen, Whitey! The Sights and Sounds of Black Power 1965-1975 won't be out until February 2012, but author/editor Pat Thomas has another music-related book he's celebrating this Saturday, December 10th here in Seattle.

Join Pat at Vermillion as he hosts a reading for the book 33 Days: Touring In A Van, Sleeping on Floors, Chasing A Dream by Bill See. As Pat describes it: "If you remember when R.E.M was an indie-rock band, when the Minuteman were a source of political inspiration, when the Dream Syndicate was the most visceral guitar band in America, when college radio and not the internet was the only way to discover new music, when fanzines and not Facebook was how you made new friends, then Bill See's book about being 'on the road' with his band Divine Weeks in 1987 will entertain and inspire you...along the way the band discovers not just America, but themselves."

Pat welcomes both author Bill See and Divine Weeks' guitarist Raj Makwana. They'll also be joined by Fantagraphics friend, local journalist Chris Estey, who will be doing a reading as well. This free event starts at 6:00 PM at Vermillion [ 1508 11th Ave, Seattle ].

Drawing Pop Culture: The Art of Jack Davis poster

Thank you so much to everyone who made it out to The Strand last night as our own Gary Groth chatted with the legendary cartoonist Jack Davis!  If you missed out, or you're just MAD for more, you're in luck!

Tonight, Friday, December 2nd, the Scott Eder Gallery in Brooklyn is proud to present an exhibit showcasing Jack Davis: Drawing American Pop Culture, with the artist himself in attendance! (And it's his birthday so you can wish him a happy birthday in person!)

In his first solo exhibition at the gallery, the iconic artist will present a collection of his ingenious drawings from across his half-century long career. Included are watercolors used on the cover of Time and TV Guide; comic book pages from MAD; Davis' famously gnarled football illustrations; and a rogue's gallery of cowboys, hunters and frustrated politicians. Plus, there will be a surprise or two from his classic Bill Gaines' 1950's EC Comics The Crypt of Terror and Two-Fisted Tales. This exhibition offers a rare glimpse into the process and career trajectory one of America's greatest visual commentators.

Join Jack Davis at the opening reception, from 6:00 - 8:00 PM at the Scott Eder Gallery [ 18 Bridge St. #2i, Brooklyn ]. This exhibit is presented in conjunction with The Brooklyn Comics and Graphics Festival (where you can also meet Jack on Saturday, December 3rd)!

Steve Brodner in Being American at the Visual Arts Gallery NYC
Written by janice headley | Filed under Steve Brodnerevents 1 Dec 2011 8:34 AM

We're excited to announce that satirical illustrator Steve Brodner is part of an exhibit currently showing at the SVA Visual Arts Gallery in NYC. Tonight, Thursday, December 1st, they'll be celebrating with a reception from 6:00 to 8:00 PM!

Titled "Being American," this collection was curated by Francis Di Tommaso who says, “The twenty artists in this show have twenty stories to tell about the experience of being American today. Though many would not normally exhibit in the same venue — the work of some is almost never seen outside of the printed page — they all have immediately accessible and also exquisitely nuanced commentaries to make on American culture.”

That's one of Steve's pieces in the show above, and you can check out his blog to see a few more, or check them out in person if you live in New York City! The exhibit runs through December 21st.

Jack Davis: Drawing American Pop Culture

Oh, New York City... I know you've already bought your tickets for this, right? RIGHT?!

'Cause holy hell, you do not want to miss this incredible event.  The legendary MAD Magazine cartoonist Jack Davis will be at the Strand Bookstore on Thursday, December 1st for a discussion and signing for Jack Davis: Drawing American Pop Culture.

How often do you get the chance to hear Jack Davis speak about his extensive and influential career?  And how often are we able to pair him on stage with our one and only Gary Groth leading the interview?

You can either buy the book or a $10 Strand Gift Card in order to attend this event, but I'm sure you've already done that, RIGHT? Both options admit two people.

So, join Jack and Gary for this exciting event Thursday night at 7:00 PM, in the Rare Book Room on the 3rd Floor of The Strand [ 828 Broadway (at 12th St.) ].

And don't forget, Jack will be signing at the Brooklyn Comics & Graphics Fest this Saturday, too, and has an exhibit opening at the Scott Eder Gallery on Friday... Oh, you lucky, lucky city.
