Robert Pollard in Group Art Show in Phoenix, AZ!
Written by janice headley | Filed under Robert Pollardeventsart shows 23 Apr 2014 9:13 AM

We're thrilled to see Robert Pollard is still at it!

We don't mean his band, Guided By Voices -- the indie rock veterans released seven albums just last year, and have at least five new releases planned for 2014... No, we're thrilled to see that among touring and recording, he's still making his gorgeous collage-based artwork, as featured in our 2008 collection Town of Mirrors: The Reassembled Imagery of Robert Pollard!

A few of his pieces are being featured in the exhibit, Chimerical, now on view at the Modified Arts gallery in Phoenix, Arizona -- this group art show is on view through May 10th, with a closing reception on Friday, May 2nd, from 6:00 to 10:00 PM.

Modified Arts is located at 407 E. Roosevelt St. in Phoenix, AZ.

This Thursday, April 24th, the Society of Illustrators will host an evening so fun you're sure to plotz!

Get off your tuches and catch the panel discussion From the Borscht Belt to Seinfeld: The Evolution of Jewish American Comedy, and learn more about how Jewish humor grew out of Yiddish culture, defined New York City's character in the early 20th century, and filtered into our American culture, literature, art, film and television from the 1950's to the present.

The event runs from 7:00 to 9:00 PM. Panelists include our own Drew Friedman, who will be joined by Edward Portnoy, Ph.D, Yiddish language, literature and theater expert who will serve as moderator; Larry Storch, renowned vaudeville, film and TV comedian; Bill Persky, legendary TV sitcom writer; and Tom Leopold, contemporary sketch comedy writer.

A question-and-answer session will follow the panelists' presentations. Shmooze with Drew and Larry afterwards as they sign copies of the Old Jewish Comedians trilogy and limited edition exhibit poster!

Tickets are on sale now for the mishegas! The Society of Illustrators is located at 128 East 63rd Street. If you can't make it Thursday night, you still have time to catch the exhibition, Drew Friedman's Old Jewish Comedians, through May 3, 2014.

Today is the Last Day of the Rest of Your LIfe The End

As we mentioned back in February, Fantagraphics has not one, but two, books nominated in the Graphic Novel/Comics category of the 34th annual Los Angeles Times Book Prizes!

This Friday, April 11th, the winner will be awarded in a sold out event. Is it corny to say they're already winners to us? 'Cause it's true!

Depending on how things go, you can stop by the Festival of Books on Saturday, April 12th to either congratulate or console Anders Nilsen, who will be in town to participate in the panel "Illustrating the Point: The Art of the Graphic Novel" at noon, alongside fellow artists Mimi Pond, Ben Katchor and Vanessa Davis. The panel will be held in the Seeley G. Mudd. Auditorium, Room 123.

Janet Hamlin Lecture at ICON8 in Portland, OR!
Written by janice headley | Filed under Janet Hamlinevents 4 Apr 2014 11:13 AM

Portland is priviledged to host the next installment of the national Illustration Conference, ICON, and on Saturday, July 12th, they welcome special guest, visual journalist Janet Hamlin!

"Author and illustrator Janet Hamlin has been where very few journalists or artists have dared to tread. Ms. Hamlin has had a front seat to history as the only courtroom artist to sketch the military tribunals in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. Her drawings and accompanying text provide rare insight to the military court and are the only visuals the world is allowed to see."

Experience her collection, Sketching Guantanamo: Court Sketches of the Military Tribunals, 2006-2013, in person from 11:35 AM to 12:00 PM at the Portland Art Museum [ 1219 SW Park Ave ]. She will share the stage with artist Victor Juhasz, who has been documenting the military since 2006, from training to battle to hospital wards.

Registration to the conference is required to attend. No tickets for individual main stage sessions will be sold. A "Day Rate" ticket will be announced later depending on availability. ICON8: The Illustration Conference will be held across Portland from July 9-12, 2014.

Joyce Farmer Discusses Underground Comics at Penn State!
Written by janice headley | Filed under Joyce Farmerevents 1 Apr 2014 1:23 PM

She's a superhero to us, and that's why Joyce Farmer will present the lecture “No Superheroes: Creating Underground Comics” on Thursday, April 24, at Penn State.

It's a topic Farmer knows a little thing or two about -- as the co-creator of Tits & Clits Comix series in 1972, the work of her and her contemporaries countered the sexism they saw in male-produced underground comix of the time. Come hear her talk about this revolutionary time in comics history from 7:00 to 8:30 PM.

Joyce will also discuss her amazing graphic memoir, Special Exits, that we published in 2010. None other than R. Crumb has said of this book: "One of the best long-narrative comics I've ever read, right up there with Maus... I actually found myself moved to tears."

Joyce will be speaking at Foster Auditorium inside Paterno Library at Penn State, located at 510 Paterno Library, University Park, PA.
