Janet Hamlin Lecture at ICON8 in Portland, OR!
Written by janice headley | Filed under Janet Hamlinevents 4 Apr 2014 12:13 PM

Portland is priviledged to host the next installment of the national Illustration Conference, ICON, and on Saturday, July 12th, they welcome special guest, visual journalist Janet Hamlin!

"Author and illustrator Janet Hamlin has been where very few journalists or artists have dared to tread. Ms. Hamlin has had a front seat to history as the only courtroom artist to sketch the military tribunals in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. Her drawings and accompanying text provide rare insight to the military court and are the only visuals the world is allowed to see."

Experience her collection, Sketching Guantanamo: Court Sketches of the Military Tribunals, 2006-2013, in person from 11:35 AM to 12:00 PM at the Portland Art Museum [ 1219 SW Park Ave ]. She will share the stage with artist Victor Juhasz, who has been documenting the military since 2006, from training to battle to hospital wards.

Registration to the conference is required to attend. No tickets for individual main stage sessions will be sold. A "Day Rate" ticket will be announced later depending on availability. ICON8: The Illustration Conference will be held across Portland from July 9-12, 2014.

Joyce Farmer Discusses Underground Comics at Penn State!
Written by janice headley | Filed under Joyce Farmerevents 1 Apr 2014 2:23 PM

She's a superhero to us, and that's why Joyce Farmer will present the lecture “No Superheroes: Creating Underground Comics” on Thursday, April 24, at Penn State.

It's a topic Farmer knows a little thing or two about -- as the co-creator of Tits & Clits Comix series in 1972, the work of her and her contemporaries countered the sexism they saw in male-produced underground comix of the time. Come hear her talk about this revolutionary time in comics history from 7:00 to 8:30 PM.

Joyce will also discuss her amazing graphic memoir, Special Exits, that we published in 2010. None other than R. Crumb has said of this book: "One of the best long-narrative comics I've ever read, right up there with Maus... I actually found myself moved to tears."

Joyce will be speaking at Foster Auditorium inside Paterno Library at Penn State, located at 510 Paterno Library, University Park, PA.
