Fantagraphics at the International Comic Arts Forum in Portland!

Portland, get ready for a lot of cool accents in the comics community this weekend as the Rose City hosts the 2013 International Comic Arts Forum!

From Thursday, May 23rd through Saturday, May 25th, you are invited to attend this annual academic conference, featuring Fantagraphics special guests Megan Kelso, Tommi Musturi, and T. Edward Bak!

The entire weekend is jam-packed with wonderful panels, discussions, and papers, but here are a few highlights we thought you'd particularly enjoy! (... 'cause they feature our artists!... )

Thursday, May 23rd

7:30 - 9:00 PM // A Celebration of Finnish Comics at Floating World Comics: Comics illustrator Tommi Musturi, whose work is featured in Kolor Klimax: Nordic Comics Now, and editor Ville Hänninen will discuss their work on Finnish comics at Floating World Comics [ 400 NW Couch Street ]. Max Andersson at the Seattle International Film Festival!

Fantagraphics is thrilled to welcome world-famous cartoonist and filmmaker Max Andersson to town for the Seattle International Film Festival. He'll be screening his first feature-length film Tito on Ice at the SIFF Cinema Uptown on Sunday, May 26th at 8:00 PM, with an encore screening on Tuesday, May 28th at 3:30 PM.

To promote their Fantagraphics book Bosnian Flat Dog, Andersson and fellow Swedish artist Lars Sjunnesson toured the countries of former Yugoslavia with a mummified Marshal Tito in a refrigerator.

Now comes the documentary, Tito on Ice, which takes Super 8 footage of their tour and animates it with cardboard cutouts and garbage and other recycled materials. The result is a surreal trip through the Balkans that is part promotion, part performance art, and part history of Marshal Tito and the dissolution of Yugoslavia in the early 1990s. It’s also about the underground arts and music venues that popped up when the country split apart.

Through it all there is a comics creator’s eye at work: live-action interviews suddenly switch to animation, and more than 50 sets were built for the film, all shot and animated on Super 8 film. Tito on Ice is a joyous trip through the war torn subconscious of an underground artist.

Max will be in town on Sunday night to introduce the film and engage in a Q&A afterwards. Fantagraphics will be on site, selling you copies of Bosnian Flat Dog to get signed. Tito on Ice is screening at the SIFF Cinema Uptown, located at 511 Queen Anne Avenue North. See you there!

Jaime Hernandez at COMICA: The London International Comics Festival!

As we mentioned yesterday on FLOG, comics legend Jaime Hernandez is returning to London after nearly twenty years, and he'll be the guest-of-honor at a special Comica Conversation, hosted by Comica: The London International Comics Festival, on Thursday, May 30th!

Jaime will discuss the lives and loves of his crazy ‘locas’ -- Maggie and Hopey -- and other much-loved characters from the independent phenomenon Love and Rockets.

Doors open at 6:00 PM, and the event starts at 6:30 PM sharp! The discussion runs through 8:00 PM, followed by a signing.

Tickets are selling FAST, and they've already moved the event to a larger venue to accomodate all you Love and Rockets fans! Do not sleep on this: get your tickets today either online, or by calling the box office at 020 7871 3515.

Don't let the name fool you: the Ciné Lumière Cinema at the Institut Francais is located in London at 17 Queensberry Place. The nearest tube station is at South Kensington on the Piccadilly, Circle & District lines.

Jaime Hernandez Signing at Gosh! Comics London!

It's been twenty years since comics legend Jaime Hernandez visited London, and we are making up for it in a big way!

Not only will Jaime be a guest of honor at COMICA: The London International Comics Festival, but he kicks off his UK visit on Wednesday, May 29th with a special appearance at Gosh! Comics! This signing and the COMICA talk are Jaime’s only two engagements in London, so catch him at one, or both, or miss out entirely!

Jaime will be signing from 5:00 to 7:00 PM, and our friends at Gosh! state:

As yet we do not have a limit of how many things can be signed other than the usual ‘Please be polite to your fellow fans and do not bring a suitcase full of stuff’. We’ll have a look at the line on the day and see if we need to put a limit on – if we do it will probably be something like three items. Also! Because we’ve only got Jaime for a couple of hours, we will not be able to take signed requests for this one, sorry. If you can’t make it just bribe your friend with beer or chocolate (those new Malteaser bars are pretty good) or owe them a dinner. If Jaime’s got a spare ten minutes before he’s whisked away to his own dinner we will ask him to sign some stock for us, and if that happens we will announce it. I promise. Cross my heart and hope to die.

Dash Shaw Animation Screening at Light Industry Brooklyn!

The genius Dash Shaw has been touring across the country in support of his latest graphic novel, New School, as well as the one-shot comic book, 3 New Stories. On Tuesday, May 21st, he brings at all back home to Brooklyn with an animation screening at Light Industry in the lovely Greenpoint neighborhood. Dash will screen his animation works, from cinematic permutations of his own comics, as well as adaptations of game shows and reality tv that marry their source materials' original audio tracks with a series of static illustrations to uncanny effect — Wheel of Fortune never seemed so heartbreaking, or so strange. Rounding out the lineup is a film chosen by Shaw that he finds resonant with the concerns of his particular hand-drawn animation techniques: Bobby’s Girl, an '80s anime rarity about a teenage biker, his pen pal, and his death drive.
I have to tell you: having seen Dash's presentation at the Fantagraphics Bookstore & Gallery earlier this month, I cannot encourage you more to go! The entire audience was hanging on his every word, and his explanations on his process were absolutely fascinating. You don't want to miss this, Brooklynites.
Please note: seating is limited, and first-come, first-served, so get there early! Box office opens at 7:00 PM. Tickets are $7.00, and are available at door. Johnny Ryan in VICE Illustration Art Show in London!

We've mentioned before how our own Johnny Ryan is a frequent contributor to VICE Magazine. Why, he can sometimes be found drawing chipmunks blasting Ted Nugent with semen, for example!

This Friday, May 17th, at the appropriately named Pure Evil Gallery, VICE will be holding an exhibition of work from some of their favorite illustrators, including Johnny -- "just so we can stick all their drawings up on a wall and show everybody else how great they are," they say.

The exhibition is going to include a selection of new prints, work that's been featured in VICE and original drawings especially for the show, which are designed to give an insight into how the people who do drawings for them go about doing their drawings.

The Pure Evil Gallery is located at 108 Leonard Street in London. The show runs through Sunday, June 2nd.

Caravan of Comics Heads from Australia to Seattle!

A metaphorical Winnebago (one that drives on water) containing 7 Australian comics creators has embarked upon a three-week North American tour, and this Saturday, May 18th, they'll stop at the Fantagraphics Bookstore & Gallery!

Come meet Scarlette Baccini, Mirranda Burton, Marijka Gooding, Patrick Alexander, Gregory Mackay, Dan Hayward and Bruce Mutard from 1:00 to 8:00 PM! They'll be giving a short presentation, discussing their work, and screening the feature-length documentary Graphic Novels! Melbourne!, which illuminates how Melbourne's strange water produces so many good comics.

Join us for the International Comics Celebration this weekend, and let's help welcome them to Seattle!

Her debut full-length graphic novel Today Is the Last Day of the Rest of Your Life won huge acclaim in 2011, including taking the prestigious Angouleme “Revelation” prize. Now this important work of memoir and reportage has made its way to English audiences, and Ulli Lust and Verlag Der Tagesspiegel journalist Lars von Torne as they explore this important and highly-anticipated TCAF debut. 12:15 – 1:15pm // Spotlight: Gilbert Hernandez’s Marble Season
Gilbert Hernandez is the co-creator of the acclaimed series Love & Rockets, which just celebrated its 30th anniversary. Gilbert is attending TCAF in support of his highly-anticipated, semiautobiographical new graphic novel, Marble Season. Marble Season tells the untold stories from the American comics legends’ youth, but also portrays the reality of life in a large family in suburban 1960s California. Pop-culture references—TV shows, comic books, and music—saturate this evocative story of a young family navigating cultural and neighborhood norms set against the golden age of the American dream and the silver age of comics. Michel Gagne: An Insanely Twisted Animation Saga in Portland!

We may have mentioned this before, but Michel Gagné, the editor behind Young Romance: The Best of Simon & Kirby's Romance Comics, is also a lovely artist in his own right!

And this Saturday, May 11th, Portlanders can see it for themselves as ASIFA Portland and the Art Institute’s Inkwell Animation Club present Michel Gagné: An Insanely Twisted Animation Saga!

Gagné will give a special presentation about his life in the pop-culture art world from 1:00 to 4:00 PM at the Art Institute of Portland [ 1122 NW Davis Street ]. Tell him we say hi!

Toronto Welcomes Justin Hall at the Glad Day Bookshop!

Toronto is rolling out the rainbow carpet for Justin Hall, our wonderful editor/artist behind the stellar anthology, No Straight Lines: Four Decades of Queer Comics!

On Friday, May 10th, the Glad Day Bookshop (the world's oldest LGBTQ bookshop) will be hosting a special evening with Justin, starting at 7:00 PM. Beat the (non-straight) lines at his TCAF table, and come out (no pun intended) and get your books signed!

Fantagraphics at VikingCon 2013 in Bellingham!

Montreal, get ready to laugh so hard you choke on your poutine. Michael Kupperman and Lisa Hanawalt, two of the funniest people in comics, will be signing at the Librarie Drawn & Quarterly on Monday, May 13th!

Join them starting at 7:00 PM for a slideshow presentation, jokes, drinks, and for a signing of Kupperman's greatest works, including his most recent, Tales Designed to Thrizzle, Vol. 2!

Carol Tyler at the Cincinnati Library Comic-Con!

The Public Library of Cincinnati is kicking off their very first Comic-Con this Sunday, May 5th, and they couldn't have chosen a better guest than our own Carol Tyler!

From 1:00 to 5:00 PM, they will feature a panel discussion with writers and illustrators working in the field (like Carol!), free comic books (in celebration of Free Comic Book Day), a comic book swap, artist and writer's booths, the Comic Con Drawing Contest award ceremony, and more. It's an all-ages event, and a wonderful way to celebrate comics!

Andrice Arp at SoHiTek Gallery in Portland!

We're still keeping tabs on our Mome-veteran Andrice Arp, and tonight, Thursday, May 2nd, she has some original artwork debuting at the SoHiTek Gallery in Portland, OR!

To celebrate the gallery's birthday, they have curated a show dedicated to our astrological sign, the Taurus. Dig In Your Heels: A Taurus Art Show features work from Sean Christensen ABT, Cameron Hawkey, Graham Kahler, Marsuplala, Mark Quemada, Amber Smith, Daria Tessler, Rebecca Urias, as well as Andrice! So maybe I've been looking at too many sci-fi paperback covers from the '70s lately. Whatever, I think maybe it's OK. I'm also super excited to be OIL PAINTING again! I've been thinking about it for quite a while, and this show seemed like a good opportunity to pull out my box of oil paints that I haven't opened since I moved to Portland.

Dash Shaw at Floating World Comics Portland Tonight!

Portland, if you missed Dash Shaw last weekend at Stumptown Comics Fest, or if you simply can't get enough of him (we understand), join him tonight, Thursday, May 2nd, at Floating World Comics for a signing of both his new graphic novel, New School, as well as the one-shot comic book, 3 New Stories.

If you weren't one of the lucky few to get your hands on a copy of New School, then you definitely don't want to miss this chance! Library Journal and Paste both named it one of their most-anticipated books of the year. And, as Mike put it, it's a big honkin' book!

Dash will be signing copies of his new books from 6:00 to 10:00 PM, with a gallery full of original artwork. At 7:00 PM, he'll do a presentation of his animation works (including the Sigur Rós video, “Seraph”). The exhibit of his work will be on display through May 31st.

Graham Chaffee at Meltdown in Los Angeles!

Release the hounds! Graham Chaffee will be premiering his latest graphic novel Good Dog on Friday, May 17th at Meltdown Comics in Los Angeles!

We can't wait for everyone to see Graham's latest work! Over the past few years, he's been devoting himself to the art of tattooing, but he's back with this beautiful story about Ivan, a good dog, who is plagued by terrible nightmares about chickens and rabbits. Readers accompany the stray as he navigates dog society, weathers pack politics, and surveys canine-human interactions.

And while supplies last, you can also get a copy of the FBI•MINI comic Bad Dog, a charming story of Ivan's buddy Kirby!

This Saturday, May 4th, we're thrilled to present a signing with acclaimed artist Dash Shaw for his latest Fantagraphics titles 3 New Stories and his ambitious hardcover graphic novel New School.

We'll also have this new mini-comic available, New Jobs, published by Tom Kaczynski’s mighty imprint Uncivilized Books. This limited edition mini measures a mere 1/2 page, but packs in as much emotional resonance as the brick-sized Bottomless Belly Button.

A couple living in Bed-Stuy are going to have a child. To support the child, they need to get new jobs. It's a story any of us could relate to. My heart especially went out to the panel with a stack of stark bills piled on a table.

Dash will be signing with us from 6:00 to 9:00 PM, and will discuss his work and screen short animations, including Seraph, which premiered at the recent Sundance Film Festival. Hurry out here and get your copies of his new work while they last, especially this limited edition mini!

12:00-12:45 pm // Meathaus Reunion: Becky Cloonan, Brandon Graham, Farel Dalrymple and Dash Shaw: A reflective spotlight on Meathaus luminaries, Becky Cloonan, Brandon Graham, Farel Dalrymple and Dash Shaw whose work has appeared in various Meathaus anthologies since 2002. These artists have each maintained their own strong modern stylistic identity receiving both critical and commercial acclaim. Marc Arsenault (Alternative Comics) will introduce the panel with a look at the SVA art groups and graduates that led to the creation of the Meathaus comics collective. (Room B114)

Clay Wilson, from the self-mythology that Wilson invented and polished over the years as a dashing and dangerous figure, to his personal inner landscape where his archetypal characters dwell when they arena gracing the pages of Zap Comix, Thrilling Murder, or Insect Fear, to the body of language and lore passed down from his hillbilly ancestors. 2:00-2:45 pm // Two-Faced Artist Lives Double Life in Single Body!: The joys and perils of straddling the worlds of fine art and comics with cartoonists Jon McNaught, Julia Gfrörer, and Daniel Duford, moderated by Chloe Eudaly. Join us for a conversation with our panel of artists, each of whom are experienced in the realms of fine art and comics. We'll explore how they came to work in two seemingly disparate mediums, how their work in each converges with, diverges from, and influences the other, and the the sometimes arbitrary or artificial distinction between the two. 5:00-5:45 pm // Dylan Williams Tribute Panel: Share some time with the friends and colleagues of comics' best friend as we all recount our favorite stories about the late Sparkplug publisher's life and celebrate his philosophy and work as an artist, scholar and publisher. Time permitting, we will also attempt to make sense of his passion for unsettling any and everyone who dared point a camera at him at festivals like this one. Panelists include: T Edward Bak, Julia Gfrörer, Tim Goodyear, David Lasky, Tom Neely; moderated by Milo George. (Room B114)

1:00-1:45 pm // Submissions Do's and Don'ts: Jen Vaughn (Fantagraphics), Jamie Rich (formerly Oni Press), Bob Schreck (Legendary Comics), Allison Baker (Monkeybrains Comics), and Sina Grace (Image/Skybound) will share their experiences slogging through the submissions pile, everything from finding a diamond in the rough to bartering with the mailman to stop delivering submissions. 2:00-2:45 pm // Dash Shaw's New School: Dash Shaw is a cartoonist and animator whose graphic novel New School debuts at Stumptown from Fantagraphics Books. In this spotlight presentation, he will screen and discuss his animations, including his Sigur Ros video and Sundance short Seraph, and show slides of the process behind creating New School as well as some of his other comics. Moderated by Fantagraphics' Jen Vaughn. (Room B111)

4:00-4:45 pm // DIY Publishing: For many micropublishers, making good books is easy; it's the marketing and the selling that's hard. Panelists Tom Kaczynski (Uncivilized Books), Zack Soto (Study Group), Chloe Eudaly (Reading Frenzy), Jason Leivian (Floating World Comics), Keenan Keller (Drippy Bone), and moderator Milo George will look at different printing processes and their costs and compare notes on production/distribution issues including pricing and sustainability. 5:00-5:45 pm // Spain Tribute Panel: Spain Rodriguez, legendary underground cartoonist, tore his way into hearts of readers like the beloved motorcycles that grace the pages of his comics. Patrick Rosenkranz, Jen Vaughn, Eric Reynolds, and Charles Brownstein take you though the wild days of Spain's work from his groundbreaking ZAP anthology contributions to adapting the life of Che Guevara. Get acquainted with this revolutionary cartoonist and his award-winning work. (Room B117)
