Whoa! Did you see that? Click here to see it again if you missed it!
We're pleased to unveil the final cover art for the eagerly anticipated Hernandez Bros. art book Love and Rockets: The Covers, off to the printer now! The black art on the cover will be printed on a transparent acetate overlay. Devilishly clever designer Jacob Covey explains: "It's essentially identical to how these old covers were proofed — with a hand-colored background and a black line art overlay. The case will be printed with a reproduction of the color art from a 1994 proof we had at the office. Only with the jacket in place will the art and title appear. Cool? Cool." Cool!
The book will include the front and back cover art by Gilbert, Jaime and Mario (without logos, prices or other distractions) from all 50 issues of the original series and the 15 original trade collections, plus some scans of original art and other surprises, all meticulously restored from the best available source material (remember folks, this stuff predates digital) and faithfully recolored.

We've just uploaded a 16-page excerpt (comprising the entire first chapter) of Goddamn This War! by Jacques Tardi & Jean-Pierre Verney for your perusal. This section of Tardi's second WWI masterwork covers 1914, the first year of the war, told from the somewhat jaundiced (though not completely despairing yet) point of view of a French infantry soldier, illustrated in Tardi's loose-yet-precise pen and striking watercolors. View the preview in the embedded reader here or get the PDF directly. We've just approved the printer's proofs which means the book should be hitting shelves in June or so — you can get it a little sooner if you pre-order direct from us.
In a couple of months we have a new reprint of The Complete Crumb Comics Vol. 5: Happy Hippy Comix coming your way, and we got an advance sample copy to show off to you. As you might surmise from the title, this volume has some of Crumb's most transgressive and drug-influenced stuff, with Fritz the Cat, Mr. Natural, and Angelfood McSpade all taking star turns, among other kooky characters, in material from Zap, Snatch and elsewhere. Plus Janis Joplin! It's wild, man! The original edition brought in a 1991 Harvey Award for Best Domestic Reprint Project and Booklist had this to say:
"Fantagraphics' Crumb project advances into wilder, woolier, scarier, more fantastic, and lewder and still lewder territory in [Volume 5]... This is definitely X-rated material — make that triple-X! — but it's brilliant, scabrously hilarious, absolutely basic to understanding the 1960s American counterculture, and authentically mind-blowing."
In other words, don't miss it! We'll have a bunch more preview snapshots for you soon; in the meantime, hop on the early pre-order train right here.
Reason to rejoice: the new, expanded and complete Castle Waiting Vol. 2: Definitive Edition by Linda Medley is almost here, and we've got advance copies in the office to prove it. Compiling the 15 issues that came out 2006-2009 and the 3 new issues that came out last year, this new edition finally tells the whole story. (Editor Kim Thompson explains how and why this new edition came to be.) Unexpected visitors, a secret passageway, ladies' undergarments, compelling character backstories, mysteries, laughter, tears, bowling action, a ghost... this story has it all! We won't keep you waiting long for more extensive previews; in the meantime, read a 20-page excerpt and pre-order a copy right here. (And order it together with Vol. 1 for super savings!)
The next issue of Love and Rockets: New Stories is still about 6 months away from hitting shelves. Too early to get hyped up for? Never, says we! And excitement reaches a fever pitch whenever Gilbert Hernandez sends in his original pages for scanning. More Killer in Palomar... Poison River revisited... oboy! I snuck the stack out of safekeeping in our art department for a quick snapshot.
