Introducing Fantagraphics' Fall 2014 Books
Written by Mike Baehr | Filed under Coming Attractions 5 Mar 2014 11:32 AM

Fantagraphics Fall 2014 Catalog

Behold: the future! Our catalog for titles from September through the end of the year is out and details are leaking into the infosphere, so we're opening the floodgates and giving you the complete rundown.

The headliner is, of course, the massive, no-holds-barred Complete Zap Comix box set, which is still currently evolving in format — stay tuned! Fall will be a banner season for Peanuts and Disney fans, with a bounty of new volumes and fun, attractive new packages of old favorites. We welcome Lucy Knisley, Dylan Horrocks, and the Massive gay manga phenomenon to the Fantagraphics fold this season, and bring back stalwarts like the Hernandez brothers, Wilfred Santiago, Dash Shaw, Marguerite Van Cook & James Romberger, Richard Sala, Jordan Crane, Hans Rickheit, and Max. We also have new editions and packages of some contemporary favorites. Beloved classics series continue, with new volumes of Nancy (along with the long-awaited How to Read Nancy), Prince Valiant, and The EC Comics Library, along with a major Basil Wolverton collection/bio. And it wouldn't be Fantagraphics without a couple of curveballs: a collection of jazz photography and our very first (non-vispo) poetry book! Plus, as they say, more.

All of these titles are now listed on our website — peruse our 2014 Releases category for all the listings with the most up-to-date information and pre-order links as they become available. Read/download a digital version of our print catalog for some additional info bits and sneak-peek artwork (keeping in mind that all product data and imagery is preliminary and subject to change).

Written by Mike Baehr | Filed under Usagi YojimboStan SakaipreviewsComing Attractions 28 Feb 2014 5:28 PM

Another teaser from our new reprint of Stan Sakai's Usagi Yojimbo Book 3: The Wanderer's Road for you: a downloadable excerpt with 19 pages from the book, including most of the first story, "The Tower." When Usagi comes to the aid of a hungry tokagé (the little dinosaur-like lizards that populate the Usagiverse), they both find themselves in peril at the hands — and cleaver — of an angry cook. The exciting conclusion, and six other stories (helpfully listed in the included Table of Contents), await you in this timeless classic, which you can pre-order now for shipment in April.

We all get pretty excited when the first advance copies of a new book arrive at the office, but the gasps were extra-audible this morning as we all beheld for the first time The Best Graphic Novel of 2014. OK, we're a little giddy and that may be a presumptuous designation, but given all the accolades these stories received when they were serialized in Love and Rockets, maybe not. The Love Bunglers by Jaime Hernandez is coming in a couple of months and it has that scene that made you cry, that scene that made you gasp, those scenes that made you laugh, that scene that made your heart skip a beat, and that other scene that made you cry, all between magnificently designed hard covers.

You Need This Book. I'm on the verge of shaking you all by the shoulders, the excitement is getting to me so much. Deep breaths. Please proceed calmly to pre-order a copy and be one of the first to have it in your mitts, and read a 14-page excerpt for free, all right here.

Nothing brightens up the day like a little day-glo chartreuse, glittery orange, and the gap-toothed smile of Tammy Pierce! Fresh out of the box, here's an advance copy of Unlovable Vol. 3, the new upcoming installment in Esther Pearl Watson's hilarious and heartbreaking saga of a teen on the bottom of her high school pecking order and her misguided attempts to fabulize her humdrum small-town existence. In this volume, it's summer break, which means fun in the sun (sunburn), boys (disastrous crushes), cheerleader tryouts (egad), and... hold up, wait... oh no... summer school!

Vol. 3 joins its predecessors on the shelves in May; we have an excerpt for you to read and a pre-order button for you to click right here. You can also get all 3 volumes, with the first 2 in a jammin' slipcase, for a nice thrifty discount!

Bomb Run and Other Stories (The EC Comics Library) by John Severin - Excerpt
Written by Mike Baehr | Filed under Will ElderpreviewsJohn SeverinHarvey KurtzmanEC ComicsComing Attractions 13 Feb 2014 12:50 PM

Harvey Kurtzman's taut, humanistic scripts and John Severin's gritty, detailed artwork (inked with preternatural precision, usually by Will Elder) combined to make some of the finest war stories ever told in any medium in the pages of EC Comics. Bomb Run and Other Stories collects all of this essential work in one hardcover volume for the first time.

Our downloadable excerpt comes complete with the Table of Contents and three full stories: the centuries-spanning "How They Die!"; the cautionary WWII tale "Weak Link!"; and the high-flying, Greek myth-inspired title story. Originally on the calendar for July, we wrapped this one a little early, so it might move up on the schedule. Either way, you can pre-order your copy right now and be among the first to get a copy (and combine it with the upcoming Joe Orlando volume Judgment Day for 20% savings!).
