Disney's greatest villain steals the spotlight! The deadly Phantom Blot — a master thief clad in a ghostly black cloak — is turning Mouseton upside down in search of seemingly ordinary box cameras. But why? Mickey's determined to find out if it kills him... and it just might!

Floyd Gottfredson, artist of Mickey Mouse from 1930-1975 and creator of the Phantom Blot, produced the most exciting Mouse tales ever told in print! "[Gottfredson's Mickey Mouse] is not just a great Mickey Mouse comic, it's one of the best comics of all time." (Chris Sims, Comics Alliance)

And the Blot's epic mayhem is just the start! Our latest book also finds Mickey battling "Mighty Whale Hunter" Pegleg Pete on the high seas — and turning "Plumber's Helper" for a job with the infamous Joe Piper! Then "Miracle Master" Mickey meets a powerful genie... and tries to save his ancient homeland from modern-day disaster!

Lovingly restored from Disney's original negatives and proof sheets, Mickey Mouse Outwits the Phantom Blot also includes more than 30 pages of dark, spooky extras! You'll enjoy rare behind-the-scenes art, vintage publicity material, and fascinating commentary by a most-wanted list of Disney scholars.

Mickey Mouse is among the world's most recognizable icons. But do you know the wild, unforgettable personality behind the icon? Start reading... you might be wearing mouse ears before you're through.

Ghost of the Grotto Starring Walt Disney's Donald Duck by Carl Barks - Excerpt
Written by Sonia Lei | Filed under previewsDisneyCarl Barks 30 Jun 2014 1:10 PM

It's one harebrained adventure after another when Donald Duck and his incorrigible nephews Huey, Dewey, and Louie are at the helm. While aboard a kelp-harvesting boat in the West Indies, the entrepreneurially-minded ducks find themselves in the middle of a centuries-long mystery: a kidnapping every fifty years by a ghost in armor. This time, the ghost is after one of Donald's nephews!

This and other short stories are collected in the first of our new line of half-height, kid-sized Donald Duck books. Ghost of the Grotto is slated for an October 2014 release. Check out our downloadable 18-page excerpt (2.7 MB) and pre-order your copy here.

Walt Disney's Uncle Scrooge and Donald Duck: The Son of the Sun by Don Rosa - Excerpt
Written by Sonia Lei | Filed under previewsDon RosaDisneyComing Attractions 23 Jun 2014 6:34 PM

In this first volume collecting Don Rosa's prolific and well-loved work, Scrooge McDuck is curating a museum exhibit to display his vast collections of riches and wonders, making the bold statement that he is "both the world's richest duck and the champion treasure hunter." This statement is pompously challenged by Scrooge's longtime rival Flintheart Glomgold — and thus begins a frenzied contest to find a rare, long-lost Incan treasure: the legendary gold stores of Manco Capac, the Son of the Sun!

The Son of the Sun will be out in stores by late September. Read the first part of our intrepid ducks' journey with a downloadable 18-page excerpt, then continue the heart-pounding, high-flying adventure by pre-ordering your copy here.

"A revelation. As in his contemporaneous animated cartoons, this Mickey is a feisty, wisecracking daredevil... Gottfredson’s charmingly old-fashioned drawings accentuate the gags and briskly propel the plotlines." – Gordon Flagg, Booklist

"I have a feeling that [these] book[s], crafted with such obvious care, will earn Gottfredson a new legion of admirers." – Leonard Maltin

"From the beautifully reproduced strips to the densely packed ancillary features, this must be the book that editors David Gerstein and Fantagraphics’ co-founder Gary Groth wanted for years for their own libraries. Their enthusiasm shows in the wonderfully designed package. This book is highly recommended for any Disney fan and fans of America's rich comic strip history." – Rich Clabaugh, Christian Science Monitor

Paste Magazine's 100 Best Comic Book Characters
Written by Jen Vaughn | Filed under Stan SakaiPeter BaggeJaime HernandezDisneyDaniel ClowesCarl Barks 13 May 2014 2:58 PM
Paste
Paste Magazine released a list of the 100 Best Comic Book Characters and a few are from Fantagraphics books! Here are our highlights:
Buddy Buys a Dump Buddy
88. Buddy Bradley from HateBuddy Buys a Dump, etc.
"For some, though, Bagge's early ‘90s hipster caricature was the closest comics got to depicting the world Gen X'ers knew, or at least the world they thought would make them look cool if they acted like they knew it. Through Buddy, Bagge bitingly dredged up the paranoia at the core of every ‘90s alt doofus." – Garrett Martin
Ghost World Enid
35. Enid Coleslaw from Ghost World
"Teenage girls, in particular, get the short shrift in comics as Betties and Veronicas, but Enid is spunky, dangerous and recognizably human. In Ghost World, Enid brings her glorious three dimensions to the trials of adolescence." – Hillary Brown
Usagi  Usagi
28. Miyamoto Usagi from Usagi Yojimbo
"Whether training under his Lord Mifune or traveling as a directionless Ronin, this rabbit bodyguard holds more gravitas and depth than any other anthropomorphic animal." – Sean Edgar
Uncle Scrooge Scrooge
15. Uncle Scrooge from Carl Bark's Uncle Scrooge and Donald Duck
"His cantankerous, money-crazed persona is tempered by a sympathetic backstory from Barks, showing how the millionaire waterfowl earned every dime of his immense wealth through hard work and cunning. This simple setup has fueled decades of stories, the animated series DuckTales and, more recently, a new series of acclaimed reprints of Barks' classic comics by Fantagraphics." –Zack Smith
Love and Rockets Hopey
"Hopey is all spikes and broken glass - a kid at heart - and, as children are, often thoughtless, selfish and wild. That she manages to be completely endearing and relatable to the reader speaks to Hernandez's achievement in Hopey's characterization." – Hillary Brown

The Love Bunglers Maggie
10. Maggie
from Love and Rockets/Locas by Jaime Hernandez
"Maggie's evolving, deepening emotions since 1981 make her one of the most realized and substantial characters in the entire comics medium. She's stereotypically feminine in many aspects - emotional, irrational, eats her feelings - but she also bends gender norms, as evidenced by her talent as a mechanic." – Hillary Brown

ROlling stone

Rolling Stone recently listed it's Top 50 Non-Superhero Graphic Novels and we made up 22% of that list (including a few books that we published and have been rereleased by others). If you haven't picked up one of these books, get steppin' to your local comic book store, buy one from the website, visit the library---you've go so many options! Picks by Joe Gross also of the Austin-American Statesman.
Safe Area Gorazde
47 Safe Area Gorazde by Joe Sacco "Joe Sacco is one of the medium's premier journalists; that he has focused on war-torn regions makes his work feel that much more vital and impressive...Gorazde - is a great place to start."
 You'll Never Know
44 You'll Never Know series by C. Tyler "Tyler is a top flight memoirist, and You'll Never Know pulses with a maturity not often found in the medium.
Usagi Yojimbo
43 Usagi Yojimbo by Stan Sakai "Never less than thoughtful and entertaining, Usagi Yojimbo is one of the most consistent comics around."
Dal Tokyo
33 Dal Tokyo by Gary Panter "Pretty much anything the most punk cartoonist ever…
Uncle Scrooge
15 Uncle Scrooge by Carl Barks "His Donald Duck stories are a comedic blast, but his Uncle Scrooge stories are veritable silly symphonies of complicated plotting and intercontinental adventure. Need a master class in how to tell a great comics story? Read any Barks' Scrooge stories from 1950 until his retirement in 1966. It's all there.
Ghost World
9 Ghost World by Daniel Clowes "You're goddamn right it's the Catcher in the Rye of comics."
The Complete Crumb
5 The Complete Crumb by R. Crumb "To ignore him completely is only to invite accidentally ripping him off; he's the Bob Dylan of the comics underground, and his work is embedded in the medium's DNA now."
larn5 Love and Rockets  Love and Rockets 6
1 Love and Rockets by Gilbert and Jaime Hernandez "Imagine the Clash or R.E.M. or Run-DMC not only never broke up, but, for 30 years, never once released a less-than-excellent record. Imagine their command of their craft just became more pronounced year after year, earning the unshakable admiration of their fans and peers. Imagine they made the best record of their career, 30 years on, this decade. This is essentially what Jaime and Gilbert Hernandez have done with Love and Rockets, the greatest American comic book series of all time."
