FCBD Rosa

Fantagraphics is proud to announce its gold level title for Free Comic Book Day for Saturday, May 3rd 2014. WALT DISNEY UNCLE SCROOGE & DONALD DUCK "A Matter Of Some Gravity" can be yours by stopping by your local comic book store next year!

This full-color 32 page kid-friendly comic book by fan favorite Don Rosa, features saucy sorceress Magica De Spell, who turns Scrooge's life sideways — literally! — when she distorts the forces of gravity with a brand new magic wand! Then, in "The Sign Of The Triple Distelfink", Lucky Gladstone Gander faces a 24-hour luck jinx — and battles to hide it from a gloating Cousin Donald! Only ever published in the USA in underprinted mid-1990's editions, these Rosa classics are back like you've never seen them before! Prepare to whet your appetite for Uncle Scrooge & Donald Duck: "The Sun of the Son" (coming out a month later in June) with these excellent comics.

Only 141 days until Free Comic Book Day!

We're halfway there! New Blighted Eye prints & more
Written by Jen Vaughn | Filed under Robert WilliamsKim DeitchKickstarterJustin GreenGlenn BrayGary PanterDon RosaDisney 20 Nov 2013 1:28 PM

We've hit the halfway mark in the month of our Kickstarter campaign. To celebrate comics, and hitting our goal, we're offering a quartet of signed, limited-edition prints featuring artwork from our upcoming book The Blighted Eye. (You can also just get the book, signed by Glenn Bray.)

We also have the iconic cover of one of the seminal 1972 autobiographical underground comics: Binky Brown Meets the Holy Virgin Mary as a $150 print. Scanned from the original black and white art and signed by cartoonist Justin Green.

Also from The Blighted Eye is a six-panel painted comic strip titled “Henry Webb” (1992), starring Gary Panter’s every-idiot; a stand-alone painting and of course, signed for $150

Also from The Blighted Eye and $150Kim Deitch's “Hell.” A giclee print from a 25” x 18 ½” ink & watercolor masterpiece, 1985.

And the estimable Robert Williams also has a print. Entitled “Gaudi,” celebration of the architect Antonio Gaudi, originally published in Gothic Blimp Works, 1970. Signed by the artist for $175.

Don Rosa has been nice enough offer color headshot sketches and dedications inside the Uncle Scrooge and Donald Duck: The Son of the Sun. At $500, this is a steal given how much his drawings go for. You choose the character and expression but we all know that hot-tempered and at-the-end-of-their-ropes make the best duck drawings.

Thank your for your continued support and nagging your friends to contribute to our campaign.

Our campaign to support our Spring-Summer 2014 season on Kickstarter is ongoing, and we're continuing to spotlight the books in question, a couple at a time. We've also put our season catalog online for you to browse. (Please note that all artwork, contents, prices, specs, and release dates are preliminary and subject to change.)

Don Rosa Library 1 prelim cover

Walt Disney's Uncle Scrooge and Donald Duck: The Son of the Sun (The Don Rosa Library Vol. 1)
by Don Rosa

208-page full-color 8.5" x 11" hardcover • $29.99
ISBN: 978-1-60699-742-0

“Great howling crashwagons!” The Richest Duck in the World is back — and so are noisy nephew Donald, wunderkinder Huey, Dewey, and Louie, and rascally richnik Flintheart Glomgold! Because you asked for it, we’re proud to present our first complete, chronological book of Duck adventures by contemporary fan favorite Don Rosa — following in the footsteps of Disney legend Carl Barks with an exciting, lovingly detailed visual style all his own! Rosa, among the world’s most beloved modern cartoonists, launched his Barksian career in 1987. Famed for his prizewinning “Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck,” Rosa wrote and drew a whopping two decades’ worth of ripping Scrooge and Donald yarns! Presented with sparkling color and “extras,” these Duckburg epics are getting a definitive, comprehensive North American edition for the very first time — at a price even Scrooge would consider a bargain!

(Note: specifications for this book have changed from the catalog!)

For a Kickstarter pledge of $50 or more, pre-order this book signed by Don Rosa while supplies last! Or, for a pledge of $500 or more, Don will do a full-color head sketch of the character of your choice!

Trail of the Unicorn prelim cover

Walt Disney's Donald Duck: Trail of the Unicorn (The Complete Carl Barks Disney Library Vol. 8)
by Carl Barks

216-page full-color 7.5" x 10.25" hardcover • $28.99
ISBN: 978-1-60699-741-3

It’s off to Shangri-Lala for Donald, Huey, Dewey, and Louie, on a perilous expedition to bring back a rare unicorn for Uncle Scrooge! But it’s not as easy as it sounds, with a mysterious stowaway, intrigue, and double-crosses in this land of many secrets. But once you do catch a unicorn, what, exactly, do you do with him? Then, in a trio of frigid challenges — “Luck of the North,” “Land of the Totem Poles,” and “Serum to Codfish Cove” — the Ducks must face the perils of the north. Each story has been meticulously restored and re-colored. Insightful story notes by an international panel of Barks experts. Introduction by Jeff Kinney, bestselling author of Diary of a Wimpy Kid. Edited by Gary Groth.

New Nancy, Peanuts, and Don Rosa Kickstarter rewards
Written by Gary Groth | Filed under PeanutsPaul KarasikMark NewgardenKickstarterErnie BushmillerDon RosaDisneyCharles M Schulz 13 Nov 2013 1:14 PM

If you run over to our Kickstarter page, you'll find a few new -- and good -- premiums.

Nancy proof sheet

1. Paul Karasik and Mark Newgarden will collaborate on a drawing, and they will do this exactly five times before collapsing in exhaustion (the drawings will be that good). Plus, they'll throw in an original, 10" x 17" vintage syndicate proof for a week of 1960s Nancy dailies! This is the promotional part of the pitch because it primes the pump for their groundbreaking 200+ page analysis and historical monograph of NancyHow to Read Nancy, coming up in our Fall 2014 season. All this for a mere $250 beans.

Peanuts print

2. Do you like Peanuts? Well, of course you like Peanuts, and, if you're the kind of right-thinking comics fan I know you are you adore Charles Schulz for all the right reasons. We're offering a print of the last Sunday Peanuts strip he drew, which ran on February 14, 2000 (literally the day after he died). This is his farewell strip because he knew he couldn't carry it on, and certainly one of the most moving strips ever drawn. It even comes framed. $100.

The Son of the Sun prelim cover

3. As you may know, we have embarked on another classic comics reprint series: Don Rosa's complete Duck run. The first volume comes out in June, titled Uncle Scrooge and Donald Duck: The Son of the Sun. We have offered signed copies of the book, but Don has now offered to do a full-color sketch in your copy of a character of your choice. And that for $500.

There will be some amazing works of art for sale later this week. Stay tuned.

In the meantime, please send us all your money.
