Down with OPP*: New Jobs

** Yeah, You Know Me.

This Saturday, May 4th, we're thrilled to present a signing with acclaimed artist Dash Shaw for his latest Fantagraphics titles 3 New Stories and his ambitious hardcover graphic novel New School.

We'll also have this new mini-comic available, New Jobs, published by Tom Kaczynski’s mighty imprint Uncivilized Books. This limited edition mini measures a mere 1/2 page, but packs in as much emotional resonance as the brick-sized Bottomless Belly Button.

A couple living in Bed-Stuy are going to have a child. To support the child, they need to get new jobs. It's a story any of us could relate to. My heart especially went out to the panel with a stack of stark bills piled on a table.

Dash will be signing with us from 6:00 to 9:00 PM, and will discuss his work and screen short animations, including Seraph, which premiered at the recent Sundance Film Festival. Hurry out here and get your copies of his new work while they last, especially this limited edition mini!

Fantagraphics Bookstore & Gallery is located at 1201 S. Vale Street in Seattle's Georgetown district. Open daily 11:30 to 8:00 PM, Sundays until 5:00 PM. Phone: (206) 658-0110.

** Yeah, You Know Me.

Dig your teeth into Relish: My Life in the Kitchen, the new graphic memoir from New York cartoonist Lucy Knisley, out now from our friends at First Second!

Larry had an advance copy behind the counter a few months ago, and I was instantly charmed by Lucy's stories of growing up as the daughter of "foodies."  Her love of food propels her around the world, finding the perfect croissants in France and addictive candy in Tokyo.

And perfectly enough, interspersed between these vignettes is recipes from Lucy herself!  A comic that helps promote healthy eating? Yes, it's true!

You can get a taste of Relish: My Life in the Kitchen this coming Friday, April 19th at the Fantagraphics Bookstore & Gallery as Lucy herself stops by for a slideshow and signing at 7:00 PM! And our own Chef Larry Reid will be whipping up some of the dishes from the book, which is something you won't want to miss in itself!

Fantagraphics Bookstore & Gallery is located at 1201 S. Vale Street in Seattle's Georgetown district. Open daily 11:30 to 8:00 PM, Sundays until 5:00 PM. Phone: (206) 658-0110.  Bon Appétit!

Not only am I thrilled when a new issue of Cometbus comes out, but I'm thrilled to find it on the shelves of our very own Fantagraphics Bookstore & Gallery!

Aaron's up to issue 55 now, wow, and this one boasts a most beautiful wraparound cover by our own Jordan Crane. "Pen Pals" is the story of Aaron and Yula, his Ukranian friend.  It's gorgeous, beautifully-written, and I can't believe it's only three stupid bucks.

If you're "friends" with Johnny Ryan on Facebook, chances are you've seen quite a few of these drawings before: in 2012, he waged a six-month-long artistic-battle against Frédéric Fleury (founder of Frederic Magazine), with each gentleman retaliating with drawings even more obscene than the one before it!

Italian publisher The Milan Review has collected their illustrated insults into this fine 140-page book (140 pages?! Wow, guys...), which we now have in stock at the Fantagraphics Bookstore & Gallery! Is this the most penises ever drawn in one comic book? I'm inclined to believe it is!

You can choose from two covers: “America Wins!” by Johnny or “France Wins!” by Frédéric.

Tout Seul dans la Forêt en Plein Jour, Avez-Vous Peur?

Ever since her performance at our Love and Rockets Anniversary Party, we've just been entranced by artist and musician Geneviève Castrée!

And for a limited time only, we have some of her comics and music for sale at the store, including this particularly exquisite album, recorded under the alias Woelv for K Records in 2007.

Not only does this record feature Geneviève's beautifully haunting music, but it also comes with a 60-page book of her lovely illustrations that exists to better understand the stories that are melodically expressed in her songs.

This entire record is sung in the French language, so if you're not Kim Thompson, you can read the translations of the lyrics included in the book, which is greatly recommended by Geneviève.

Down with OPP*: Don't Forget This Song

** Yeah, You Know Me.

I almost hesitate to spotlight this book, 'cause we can hardly keep it in stock! Thanks to rave reviews in Time Magazine and Seattle's own The Stranger, no one is forgetting The Carter Family: Don’t Forget This Song, out now from Abrams ComicArts.

It's been an honor watching this book unfold from local fellas, cartoonist David Lasky and writer Frank M. Young, and the finished product is even more beautiful than I could've imagined!

Don’t Forget This Song is more than just an "graphic novel" bio on country music legends The Carter Family; it's a really lovely, sensitive look at the bond of family. As our own Kim Deitch says on the back of the book, "Young and Lasky do a winning job presenting this absolutely charming tale of romance, compulsion, anthropology, great meteoric success, and all the ironic baggage that usually goes with that kind of success."

The dialogue is written in the Southern dialect of the time, which gives the book an added dreamy, transportive feel. And the whole dang thing even comes with a CD of rare Carter Family radio recordings, so you can listen to the music as you follow their lives!

And, oh, hey, whaddaya know... David Lasky will be signing The Carter Family: Don’t Forget This Song at the Fantagraphics Bookstore & Gallery this Friday, November 2nd, from 6:00 to 9:00 PM!  He'll be joined by Noah Van Sciver, who'll be signing his latest The Hypo: The Melancholic Young Lincoln. And we'll be joined by K Records artist Dennis Driscoll, who promises to cover some Carter Family material! Be sure to join us for this very special celebration!

** Yeah, You Know Me.

While we all eagerly await the release of Barack Hussein Obama, Larry has somehow unearthed an older title from cartoonist Steven Weissman!

Originally released in 1999 on Alternative Press, The Lemon Kids, Book 1 is a collection of stories that Steve was self-publishing under the Yikes title, and some stories that were included in the Last Gasp Comix & Stories anthology.

Fans of our other Yikes titles like Chocolate Cheeks and Chewing Gum in Church will definitely want to get their hands on this lost classic while supplies last!

The Fantagraphics Bookstore & Gallery is located at 1201 S. Vale Street in Seattle's Georgetown district. Open daily 11:30 to 8:00 PM, Sundays until 5:00 PM. Phone: (206) 658-0110. Closed this Labor Day, Monday, September 3rd.

** Yeah, You Know Me.

I'm super-excited to announce that the Fantagraphics Bookstore & Gallery is now carrying work from Koyama Press, one of my absolute favorite small press publishers, run by the lady I've deemed "The Nicest Woman in Comics"™, Ms. Annie Koyama.

And one of the titles we now have in stock is Root Rot, the forest-themed anthology edited by Annie and Michael DeForge last year, featuring Mome-vets like T. Edward Bak, Joseph Lambert, and Jon Vermilyea, alongside some other excellent artists like Derek M. Ballard, Dan Zettwoch, Hellen Jo, and many more.

Some of the contributions are singular drawings over two-spreads, like T. Edward's gorgeous opening piece, or Robin Nishio's hilarious squirrel sketches. Others submitted short strips, like Joe Lambert and Angie Wang's family portraits. They all do what a good anthology should do: which is leave you wanting more!

Get some Root Rot and other Koyama Press titles while supplies last at the Fantagraphics Bookstore & Gallery is located at 1201 S. Vale Street in Seattle's Georgetown district. Open daily 11:30 to 8:00 PM, Sundays until 5:00 PM. Phone: (206) 658-0110.

** Yeah, You Know Me.

Hark! It's Kate Beaton calendars! And, you can get them now, only at the Fantagraphics Bookstore & Gallery, fresh from their debut at the Drawn & Quarterly booth at San Diego Comic-Con!

Before you scoff and say, "No one uses calendars anymore," I want to point out that at my day job, my officemate and I each have paper calendars at our desks, (his, a boring Office Max one; mine, an excellent Apak Little Otsu one) and we work in the same room!!! Everyone needs a calendar!

There are two different designs to choose from: one has a literature theme and the other has a more general theme. Both feature page after page of Kate's delightful strips that landed her on the New York Times Bestselling Graphics Novels list and on the Best of 2011 list in Time Magazine!

Get 2013 off to a great start, and get one today! The Fantagraphics Bookstore & Gallery is located at 1201 S. Vale Street in Seattle's Georgetown district. Open daily 11:30 to 8:00 PM, Sundays until 5:00 PM. Phone: (206) 658-0110.

Darth Vader and Son by Jeffrey Brown

* Other People's Publications
** Yeah, You Know Me.

"Down With OPP" is our erratically-scheduled column where we spotlight books by other publishers that we carry at the Fantagraphics Bookstore & Gallery.  And I'm excited to announce we just got in a batch of Darth Vader and Son by Jeffrey Brown, out now from our friends at Chronicle Books!

This is a charming little book that depicts what it might've been like if Darth Vader had raised Luke Skywalker as a kid: bedtime stories about Darth Maul, trips to the zoo to see the banthas, afternoon baseball games with the lightsaber. You don't have to be a parent to appreciate the book, and you don't even have to be a Star Wars fanatic. After all, this kind-of humor is universal, amiright?:

Darth Vader hit in the groin with a soccer ball

But, y'know, Fathers Day is coming up on Sunday, June 17th, and this nice little embossed hardcover book makes a great gift for any Dad, even if he isn't a dark lord of the Sith. Why, you could even get it personalized this Saturday, June 2nd as Jeffrey will be making an appearance at the Fantagraphics Bookstore & Gallery from 6:00 to 8:00 PM!

Yours truly will be awkwardly interviewing him about comics and his new film (!!!), the romantic comedy Save the Date, which will be screening Thursday, May 31st and Friday, June 1st at the Seattle International Film Festival.  (In fact, I'm told there's artwork by fellow Fantagraphics artists Paul Hornschemeier and Anders Nilsen around the set of the movie!) It's going to be a great night, and we may even have some special guests joining us... Plus, our own Larry Reid will be unveiling his latest power tool racer!

The Fantagraphics Bookstore & Gallery is located at 1201 S. Vale Street in Seattle's Georgetown district. Open daily 11:30 to 8:00 PM, Sundays until 5:00 PM. Phone: (206) 658-0110.
