Saturday also marks the first national Independent Bookstore Day. Following a successful inaugural year in California, Independent Bookstore Day hopes to attract legions of literati the way Record Store Day rallies audiophiles to their local record retailers. No fewer than 17 bookstores in the Seattle area are joining forces in an unprecedented effort to draw attention to the wonders of the written word. Details of this promotion can be found in this story in the current issue of The Stranger, complete with cautionary comments from Fantagraphics Bookstore curator Larry Reid.
Fantagraphics Bookstore is located at 1201 S. Vale Street in the heart of Seattle's historic Georgetown arts community. Open daily 11:30 to 8:00 PM, Sundays until 5:00 PM. Phone 206.658.0110. Wherever you are, please support your local comic book shops and independent bookstores on Saturday.
New York, NY - The man of many talents, Ed Piskor will be joined by notable New Yorkers in the hip hop scene to discuss the dynamic intersectionality of hip hop and comics in an event called New York Comics & Picture-Story Symposium. Eric Orr - creator of "Rappin' Max Robot", the first ever Hip-Hop comic book. Orr is a graphic designer, illustrator, graffiti artist, and visual innovator.
Jazzy Jay - a DJ and produver whose career began in the '70s as a DJ for Afrika Bambaataa and the Universal Zulu Nation.
DJ Johnny "Juice" Rosado - best known for his work as producer and DJ artists such as Public Enemy, the Beastie Boys, Slick Rick, Leaders and the New School, and DMC.
All moderated by Patrick Reed, who puts together Hip Hop and Comics panels at conventions all across the country. He also contributes to Comics Alliance and edits Depth of Field magazine.

The comix community celebrates the colorful diversity of our often-marginalized medium this Saturday, May 3 with Free Comic Book Day. In a show of appreciation unique to our industry, publishers and retailers go to great expense to make exclusive editions available at no charge to consumers. The goal is to attract new customers or introduce regular readers to books they might otherwise overlook. With that noble intention in mind, allow us to suggest that Free Comic Book Day in no way prevents patrons from purchasing comics on Saturday.
It would be wonderful to see comic book enthusiasts emulate the example of music fans on Record Store Day, when thousands of people flock to independent record retailers and stock up on product in a remarkable display of affection for their favorite shops. Your local comic book stores deserve similar support. So enjoy the free comic books and remember to purchase a few as well.
Toronto, put on your party pants! Ed Piskor is gonna shake the shack this Saturday at The Beguiling's Free Comic Book Day event! On Satuday, May 3rd from Noon-6pm, Ed Piskor will be signing and sketching in free copies of his Hip Hop Family Tree Two-in-One comic book (in addition to your Hip Hop Family Tree Vol. 1 graphic novels). Cartoonist and Ed's studio mate, Tom Scioli, will also be there signing his FCBD book, Transformers Vs. G.I. Joe.
The fun is only a few days a way. Show up EARLY 'cause those books are gonna be gone fast!
We got our advance shipment of Hip Hop Family Tree Two-in-One and it is looking gooood. This Ed Piskor joint drops on Free Comic Book Day, May 3, 2014, exclusively at participating comic shops worldwide. This sampler of material from the first two volumes includes some exclusive guest pinups by Alexis Ziritt, Toby Cypress, Natalie Andrewson, Jasen Lex, and Johnny Negron, plus some other special touches and surprises courtesy of Jim Rugg. All at the cost to you the consumer of zip, zero, zilch, nada.
Ed himself will be on hand to launch the comic at a certain "beguiling" comic shop in Canada on FCBD... stay tuned for details.
