Don't miss the wild party at Fantagraphics Bookstore this Saturday, December 13 as legendary artist Robert Williams unveils the Complete Zap Comix with an exhibition, book signing and reception from 6:00 to 9:00 PM.  Join us as we commemorate the 8th anniversary of the bookstore with another memorable holiday gala.

From the time it first appeared in 1968 - peddled from a baby carriage on the streets of San Francisco's Haight Ashbury district - R. Crumb's perversely perceptive observations altered the course of American counterculture. Crumb was soon joined by Robert Williams, Gilbert Shelton, Rick Griffin, Victor Moscoso, Spain Rodriguez, S. Clay Wilson, and Paul Mavrides. The Complete Zap Comix includes all prior issues plus the previously unpublished 17th issue. A limited number of this sold-out set will be available for sale, along with other subversive publications by Zap artists.

This event coincides with the festive holiday edition of the Georgetown Art Attack, featuring visual and performing arts presentations throughout the historic arts community. Fantagraphics Bookstore & Gallery is located at 1201 S. Vale Street (at the corner of Airport Way S.) just minutes from downtown Seattle. Open daily 11:30 to 8:00 PM, Sundays until 5:00 PM. Phone 206.658.0110.

Lonesome_Go2

Tim Lane will sign copies of his fascinating new graphic novel The Lonesome Go. His work is inspired by 1950s pulp magazines, film noir, and EC crime and suspense comic books. The atmospheric artwork perfectly complements the midcentury mythology of Lane's engaging stories.

Fantagraphics Bookstore & Gallery welcomes underground comix legend Robert Williams on Saturday, December 13 to celebrate the publication of the Complete Zap Comix Anthology with an exhibition and book signing. This event kicks off a weeklong series commemorating the monumental, multi-volume collection of comix that changed the future of this marginalized medium.

From the time it first appeared in 1968 - peddled from a baby carriage on the streets of San Francisco's Haight Ashbury district - R. Crumb's perversely perceptive observations in Zap altered the course of American counterculture. The Zap Comix collective came to include eight creative misfits, as Crumb was joined by Robert Williams, Gilbert Shelton, Rick Griffin, Victor Moscoso, Spain Rodriguez, S. Clay Wilson, and Paul Mavrides. Over the course of three and-a-half decades they produced 16 issues on an intermittent schedule. The Complete Zap Comix Anthology will include all prior issues plus the previously unpublished #17 and a fascinating oral history of Zap by underground comix scholar Patrick Rosenkranz. A special, limited edition of the anthology will include a portfolio of signed prints from the pages of Zap. The exhibition at Fantagraphics Bookstore will feature prints, posters, drawings and related ephemera from these master cartoonists.

Hysteria_in_RemissionMr_Bitchin

Robert Williams emerged on the American art scene in 1965 as a designer for notorious hot rod celebrity Ed "Big Daddy" Roth. In addition to his later work on Zap and other underground comix, Williams has enjoyed a successful career as a fine artist. His work was featured in MoCA's landmark "Helter Skelter" exhibition in 1992 and the travelling "Kustom Kulture" show, which appeared at Seattle's Center on Contemporary Art in 1994. His paintings have since been exhibited in prestigious galleries and museums worldwide. Fantagraphics Books has published three volumes of Williams work including Malicious Resplendence, Hysteria in Remission, and Conceptual Realism. Williams will sign copies of these and other books at the reception on December 13 from 6:00 to 9:00 PM, which marks the 8th anniversary of Fantagraphics Bookstore. This event also coincides with the colorful holiday edition of the Georgetown Art Attack.

On Sunday, December 14 at 4:00 PM, Fantagraphics Books co-hosts the Seattle premiere of Robert Williams: Mr. Bitchin' at Northwest Film Forum, 1515 12th Avenue on Capitol Hill. This wildly entertaining documentary, directed by Mary Reese and Nancye Ferguson, chronicles the career of this incredibly influential artist. Williams will introduce the movie and answer questions following the screening.

On Thursday, December 18, at 7:00 PM, editor J. Michael Catron will give a slide presentation on the history of Zap Comix and its lasting cultural implications. The festivities will conclude on Saturday, December 20 from 4:00 to 6:00 PM with a Tribute to S. Clay Wilson featuring Patrick Rosenkranz, Dennis Dread and Jim Blanchard. SEATTLE: Eroyn Franklin + Tim Lane in the Fanta Store
Written by Jen Vaughn | Filed under Tim LaneFantagraphics BookstoreeventsEroyn Franklin 26 Nov 2014 11:31 AM
Lonesome GO
Next Saturday, December 6th with the crisp air at your heels, warm yourself in the light of the Fantagrapahics Bookstore as two cartoonists present their modern comics. Neo-noir cartoonist Tim Lane and prolific self-publishing cartoonist Eroyn Franklin will fill the dark night with their tales of trouble and woe from 7pm on at the bookstore in Georgetown.
Dirt Bag
The event is also the Marathon II closing party! This is your last chance to ogle the curated work of Short Run Comix and Arts Festival exhibitors including John Porcellino, Pam Wishbow, Josh Simmons, MariNaomi, Ed Piskor, and Tom Neely.

Tim Lane Lonesome Go
Alternative cartoonist and illustrator Tim Lane resides in St. Louis, a bleak urban landscape that provides the backdrop for his austere suspense stories. Inspired by midcentury film noir, pulp adventure, and early EC crime comics, Lane constructs unflinching narratives with a seductively stark rendering technique. His acclaimed anthology, Abandoned Cars from Fantagraphics Books, is now available in trade paperback editions. Lane will present his latest collection of new American mythology, The Lonesome Go.

Eroyn
Eroyn Franklin
is a Seattle-based comics artist, illustrator, and co-founder of Short Run Comix and Arts Festival. As Short Run's final events come to a close, and everyone wants a little more comics culture, Eroyn will present a sneak preview of her upcoming graphic novel, Dirtbag. The book is filled with ink wash illustrations that evoke a palpable sense of place and cinematic nostalgia. After escaping the monotony of suburban Texas, Eroyn embraces a dirtbag lifestyle fueled by idealism and the search for authenticity in the world of drunks, radicals, and sundry riffraff. She embarks on a lowbrow grand tour - dumpster diving, scamming rides, and squatting her way through Europe. Dirtbag is Eroyn's third graphic novel and is being produced with a CityArtist grant from The Seattle Office of Arts and Culture.

late child jhu

Wednesday, November 26th

New York - The official release of the brand new graphic novel from Marguerite Van Cook and James RombergerThe Late Child and Other Animals, kicks off at Jim Hanley's Universe (or JHU) with a signing from 6-8 pm. Amidst all the other new comic releases this Wednesday, Late Child sticks out as a gorgeously illustrated tale of generational struggles and growth. The poetric lyricism of Van Cook and Romberger is swift and harrowing, told through a collage of memories and intimate moments that are often uplifting despite the difficult endeavours. So catch this and probably an X-Men book this Wednesday! (More Details)

sub pop

Saturday, November 29th

Seattle, WA - If you were born in Washington, or have ever landed at SeaTac airport, chances are you're familiar with the music of Sub Pop Records. But before the iconic label, there was Sub Pop USA, a fanzine of underground sound, and proponents of bands that would soon be national icons (Nirvana, Mudhoney, Sonic Youth, just to name a few), and featured cover by artists like Charles Burns and Lynda Barry. Fantagraphics Bookstore and Gallery will be hosting the release of Sub Pop USA: The Subterranean Pop Music Anthology, 1980-88, published by Bazillion Points. We will also be joined by Calvin Johnson, founder of K Records in Olympia and main man of Beat Happenings, who will be dropping some of those beats live in store. Event begins at 6 pm! The Seattle Collective Holiday Bazaar presents hand crafted and wholly loved items, which truly make the best presents for yourself (and I guess your loved ones) during the holidays. Stop by between 11 am - 6 pm where we'll have a gathering of new titles and well beloved ones to keep you company during these dark and rainy months. If that doesn't sound like a deal, there's also liquor. 'Nuff said? (More Details)

Blue Friday and Small Business Saturday
Written by Larry Reid | Filed under rockFantagraphics historyFantagraphics Bookstoreevents 24 Nov 2014 3:52 PM

 Blue_Friday

Don't miss another wild weekend at Fantagraphics Bookstore & Gallery. It begins with our annual Blue Friday celebration of all things Smurf. See our holiday Smurf Village and pick up a copy of the brand new Return of Smurfette, Finance Smurf, and other blue wonders, designed by former Fantagraphics art director Adam Grano for our good friends at Papercutz.

 Small_Business_Saturday

Come back the following day for Small Business Saturday, a national marketing effort aimed at encouraging holiday shoppers to patronize locally owned enterprises. Aside from the obvious irony of huge multinational corporations promoting a "Shop Small" campaign, we appreciate the sentiments. Please get out and support local independent businesses on Saturday - and every other day!

 Samll_Sub_Pop

Fantagraphics Bookstore commemorates Small Business Saturday with a party focused on an independent Northwest enterprise that changed the world. Sub Pop USA: The Subterranean Pop Music Anthology, 1980 - 1988 lavishly documents the early years of the legendary Seattle label. The zines, cassettes, and columns preserved in the book are prescient relics of a regional movement that left an indelible mark on our cultural landscape. Join author and Sub Pop founder Bruce Pavitt, DJ Dub Narcotic, and live music by K Records founder Calvin Johnson for this unforgettable celebration of creative independence on Saturday, November 29 at 6:00 PM.

Subterranean Seattle
Written by Larry Reid | Filed under staffrockFantagraphics historyFantagraphics BookstoreeventsCharles Burns 19 Nov 2014 12:43 PM

Casual fans of Fantagraphics may not be aware of the close association we have with Seattle's illustrious music scene. I was reminded of this relationship on Friday while attending a sold out Mudhoney and Tom Price Desert Classic concert. Nearly half the musicians on stage that night were former or current Fantagraphics staffers. What a great place to work!

  SubPopBarry

We'll celebrate the legacy of Seattle's early music and comix on Saturday, November 29 as Fantagraphics Bookstore & Gallery hosts the book launch party for Sub Pop USA: The Subterranean Music Anthology, 1980 -1988. The book documents the formative years of Bruce Pavitt's fiercely independent fanzine, cassette label and music column. Fantagraphics curator Larry Reid was a contributor to the fanzine (under the pseudonym Lewy Louie.). Bookstore staffer Russ Battaglia contributed graphics and photos to the zine, which were graced with covers by Lynda Barry and Charles Burns. It was amazing to see the almost immediate infleunce Pavitt's modest enterprise had on pop music. To those close to him, it came as no surprise that within a decade, Sub Pop would impact popular culture on a global scale.

 SubPop5   CalvinBeatHappening  SubPop7

The book includes essays by Reid, Charles R. Cross, Ann Powers, Gerard Cosley, and Calvin Johnson, founder of K Records and early Sub Pop fanzine collaborator. Johnson will perform music at the party, which is the first time he'll play Fantagraphics since Beat Happening rocked our wild warehouse party in 1994 (attended by newly anointed princes of punk, Nirvana). Many contributors to the old zine and new book will be at the November 29 reception from 6:00 to 8:00 PM - a great way to end Small Business Saturday.
