Written by Larry Reid | Filed under Fantagraphics Bookstoreeventsawardsart shows 7 Jul 2014 1:11 PM

Every three months, Seattle's tony cultural journal City Arts awards cash prizes for the best artworks exhibited in local galleries. A panel of three guest jurors nominates finalists each quarter. Winners will be chosen by popular vote this Thursday, July 11 at the Summer Art Walk Awards party. Max Clotfelter's story from the Intruder 10 exhibition in April at Fantagraphics Bookstore & Gallery is up for an award. Show up at Sole Repair by 9:00 PM, have a drink, carefully consider all the nominated work, then vote for Max!

Blowout at Fantagraphics Bookstore

SoundWave

Honk Fest West on Friday was a blast! Over 30 cacophonous brass bands from across the country descended on Georgetown for this annual gathering. As was the case last year, the event began on a somber note with a funeral march in front of Fantagraphics Bookstore in memory of Kim Thompson on the first anniversary of his passing. The concerts climaxed with a pitched percussion battle between the Super Bowl champion Seahawks Blue Thunder and the Garfield Drumline (alma mater of musicians like Jimi Hendrix, Quincy Jones, and Macklemore.) Too much fun!

McGinn_Honk_Fest
Our good friend and former Mayor Mike McGinn dropped in to do some comix shopping during the festival. Lest we be accused of favoritism, we also played host to current Mayor Ed Murray a week earlier at the colorful Georgetown Carnival below. Good times.

Don't miss Fantagraphics Bookstore's latest creation in Hazardfactory's world famous Power Tool Races. This thrilling side-by-side spectacle is the centerpiece of Saturday's colorful Georgetown Carnival. Extreme Measures is powered by a DeWalt retractable tape. You'll just have to see it race. The bookstore  has entered wicked tools in every race since 2007 and won the top prize in 2011 with the Georgetown Chainsaw Massacre.

The Georgetown Carnival is a festive celebration of the creative diversity of Seattle's oldest neighborhood. Acrobats, aerialists, sideshows, stiltwalkers, interactive arts, carnival games and confections combine to create one of the region's liveliest art fairs. Musical highlights include Tummy, Ancient Warlocks, Mark Pickerel (formerly of Screaming Trees), Vaporland (featuring former Love Battery, Tad, and Fluid members), and more. Then get ready to Rumble with the architect of the Seattle Sound, Jack Endino's Earthworm. Seattle Mayor Ed Murray kicks off the festivities with opening remarks at noon. All free, all day, all ages. The Accidental Love God
Written by Larry Reid | Filed under staffPeter BaggeJessica AbelFantagraphics historyFantagraphics BookstoreeventsDame Darcy 9 May 2014 12:42 PM

About the time I began working for Fantagraphics as marketing and promotions director, Peter Bagge ran a contest in the third issue of his wildly popular Hate comic book. "Win a Date With Stinky" urged female readers to "Send in one or more glamorful photos and/or drawings of yourself" and "Explain in 25 words or less why you're worthy of Stinky's affection." What self-respecting woman, I wondered, would enter a contest to win a date with a comic book character? Named Stinky? I was about to find out. I spent several months acting as Peter's unwitting accomplice on a series of surreptitious "Stinky Dates" that saw me playing Leonard the Love God opposite lovely and talented young artists like Jessica Abel and Dame Darcy. This buffoonery was documented in the pages of Hate, much to amusement of my wonderful wife, not to mention the fashionable alternative rock band Babes in Toyland. (Don't ask.)

Hate_3Hate_9

Like countless members of my generation, Peter Bagge's Hate was a funny and affectionate chronicle of my misspent youth. Beyond that, his work played a pivotal role in shaping the ideology of a youth movement that penetrated popular culture on a global scale. His comix have enriched our lives in ways we can only now begin to appreciate.

Join us in celebrating the many accomplishments of this incredibly gifted artist on Saturday, May 10 at Fantagraphics Bookstore & Gallery as we debut the latest, and perhaps final chapter of the Buddy Bradley story, Buddy Buys a Dump. The reception includes an exhibition of original comix pages, complimentary beverages, a book signing, and special musical performances by Kelli Frances Corrado and The Hinges. See you all at 6:00 PM on Saturday.

Peter Bagge Party at Fantagraphics Bookstore on May 10!

Fantagraphics Bookstore & Gallery Presents Peter Bagge

Join us at Fantagraphics Bookstore & Gallery this Saturday at 6:00 PM to celebrate the publication of Peter Bagge’s new book with a show of original drawings, book signing and live music. The evening also marks the 10th anniversary of our retail partner Georgetown Records.

Peter Bagge’s Hate has chronicled the misadventures of Buddy Bradley and his crew of lovable losers since the formative period of the grunge era. Buddy Buys a Dump contains the last nine issues of Hate Annual and completes the current story arc with a new twenty-page conclusion, many of them on display for the occasion.

Visitors to the bookstore are invariably greeted with a delightfully esoteric soundtrack courtesy of Georgetown Records. Over the course of the last decade, they’ve earned a reputation as one of the region’s premier purveyors of vintage vinyl specializing in punk, prog, goth, garage, psychedelic, international, and other rare recordings. Come celebrate their 10th anniversary with Peter Bagge and live music by Kelli Frances Corrado and The Hinges.

These events coincide with the festive Georgetown Art Attack featuring colorful visual and performing arts presentations throughout the historic neighborhood. Fantagraphics Bookstore & Gallery is located at 1201 S. Vale Street, just minutes south of downtown Seattle. Open daily 11:30 to 8:00 PM, Sundays until 5:00 PM. Phone 206.658.0110.

A 10-Year Record!

Georgetown Records

Visitors to Fantagraphics Bookstore & Gallery are invariably greeted with a delightfully esoteric soundtrack courtesy of our retail partners at Georgetown Records. For seven and a half years, they've cheerfully accommodated our nerdy comix parties, panels, and presentations. Come celebrate their 10th anniversary this Saturday, May 10 from 6:00 to 9:00 PM, coinciding with Peter Bagge's Buddy Buys a Dump exhibition and book signing.

Over the course of the last decade, Georgetown Records has earned a reputation as one of the region's premier purveyors of vintage vinyl, specializing in punk, prog, goth, garage, psychedelic, international, and other rare recordings. It's a popular stop for both local and touring musicians as well as other cultural connoisseurs.

The party on Saturday features live music by Kelli Frances Corrado and The Hinges. It begins a series of events commemorating ten years of contributions to Seattle's music milieu. The Fantagraphics family congratulates our colleagues at Georgetown Records and encourages our customers to patronize their awesome store.

Support Your Local Shops on Free Comic Book Day!
Written by Larry Reid | Filed under FCBDFantagraphics Bookstoreevents 1 May 2014 5:08 PM

FCBD_logo_wide

The comix community celebrates the colorful diversity of our often-marginalized medium this Saturday, May 3 with Free Comic Book Day. In a show of appreciation unique to our industry, publishers and retailers go to great expense to make exclusive editions available at no charge to consumers. The goal is to attract new customers or introduce regular readers to books they might otherwise overlook. With that noble intention in mind, allow us to suggest that Free Comic Book Day in no way prevents patrons from purchasing comics on Saturday.

It would be wonderful to see comic book enthusiasts emulate the example of music fans on Record Store Day, when thousands of people flock to independent record retailers and stock up on product in a remarkable display of affection for their favorite shops. Your local comic book stores deserve similar support. So enjoy the free comic books and remember to purchase a few as well.

Intruder_poster

If you're near Seattle, complete your Free Comic Book Day adventure at Fantagraphics Bookstore & Gallery where we'll be hosting a tasty Intruder barbecue from 2:00 to 5:00 PM with hot dogs, refreshments, of course, and free comix.
