Celebrating Seven in Seattle
Written by Larry Reid | Filed under Jim WoodringFantagraphics historyFantagraphics Bookstore 17 Oct 2013 1:03 PM

Seven years ago this weekend, Fantagraphics Bookstore & Gallery quietly opened for business in Seattle. (Following a 6-week shakedown, we hosted our grand opening gala in December 2006.) Featuring challenging contemporary comix, graphics, illustration, experimental music and other marginalized media, the space was quickly woven into the cultural fabric of the region. We have since attracted a remarkable array of artists and patrons from across the country and around the world. Thank you all so much!

Please come visit the store and see the astonishing new exhibition by Jim Woodring. (Yes. He really drew them with the giant pen.) Peruse our wonderfully diverse, yet cohesive selection of comix, graphics novels, and badass books. Check out the colorful collection of new and vintage vinyl offered by our retail partner Georgetown Records. Explore the historic Georgetown industrial arts colony. Hope to see you soon.

Down with OPP*: In Case We Die Audiobook
Written by janice headley | Filed under Fantagraphics BookstoreeventsDown with OPPDanny Bland 10 Oct 2013 12:11 PM

* Other People's Publications, er... "Production"!
** Yeah, You Know Me.

It's not enough that Danny Bland's debut novel is amazing, no.  Local 638 Records had to go and release an audio version of this semi-autobiographical wicked tale that takes "amazing" to a whole 'nother level!!!

Just take a look at this stellar roster of readers: Duff McKagan (Guns & Roses), Mike McCready (Pearl Jam), Mark Lanegan (Screaming Trees, Queens of the Stone Age), Steve Earle, Aimee Mann, Mark Arm (Mudhoney), Marc Maron (WTF With Marc Maron)... and that's just to name a few! See the complete star-studded line-up and sample some passages at their Bandcamp page. Together, the audio book is over seven hours long! Hello, road trip accompaniment!

Plus, each incredible artist, actor, and musician who recorded a chapter DONATED their time and talents.  If that's not a testament to the powerful prose of Bland, I don't know what is.

Believe it or not, it gets even better:  a portion of all audiobook proceeds will go to MusiCares, a non-profit arm of the Grammy Foundation providing medical care and sobriety resources for musicians. (Once you read the book, you'll understand why!)

If somehow I still haven't convinced you, then stop by Elliott Bay Bookstore in Seattle on Saturday, October 12th to witness a riveting reading by Bland himself at 7:00 PM! Then come get your CD at the Fantagraphics Bookstore & Gallery, located at 1201 S. Vale Street in Seattle's Georgetown district. Open daily 11:30 to 8:00 PM, Sundays until 5:00 PM. Phone: (206) 658-0110. (Don't live in Seattle? Click on over to Local 638 Records for all your purchasing needs!)

Fantagraphics Bookstore & Gallery presents Jim Woodring: Fran

September 27, 2013 – Seattle, WA . Join visionary artist and cartoonist Jim Woodring at Fantagraphics Bookstore & Gallery on October 12 for an exhibition and book signing commemorating publication of his latest graphic novel Fran. The event features works created with his giant quill pen and musical entertainment by Stephen Steinbrink.

Seattle-based iconoclast Jim Woodring has enchanted readers for years with the improbable adventures of Frank and a supernatural cast of supporting characters. Metaphysical romance enters the picture in Fran, when the title character seduces Frank. Woodring describes this latest wordless volume as both a sequel and prequel to his sensational graphic novels Weathercraft and Congress of the Animals – completing a surrealistic circle. The idiosyncratic artist will display imaginative artworks created with his giant quill pen, as well as the 7 foot-long-pen itself.

The opening reception on Saturday, October 12 from 6:00 to 9:00 PM includes musical entertainment by K recording artist Stephen Steinbrink. This event coincides with the colorful Georgetown Art Attack featuring visual and performing art presentations throughout the historic business district.

On Saturday, October 26 from 6:00 to 8:00 PM, Fantagraphics Bookstore and Elysian Brewing host a preview of the latest Woodring-inspired Oddland beer series. Woodring will demonstrate his prowess with his giant pen while costumed revelers sample his latest concoction.

Celebrate Baseball’s Golden Age at Fantagraphics Bookstore on Saturday

With baseball’s pennant races heating up, Fantagraphics Bookstore & Gallery looks back to an earlier era of the national pastime. Willard Mullin’s Golden Age of Baseball: Drawings 1934 – 1972 chronicles the game and its legendary players. The bookstore will display pages from the artist’s long career opening Saturday, September 14.

As America’s premier sports cartoonist, Willard Mullin was in New York to record the careers of Babe Ruth, Joe DiMaggio, and Lou Gehrig. He witnessed Jackie Robinson’s historic integration of the game and documented the departure of the Dodgers and Giants to the west. In many significant ways, the game of baseball reflected the changes in mid-century American society, and Mullin’s delightful drawings captured the essence of the era with both humor and reverence.

Fantagraphics' deluxe hardcover edition of Willard Mullin’s Golden Age of Baseball preserves the legacy of this American master for posterity.
