Willard Mullin's Golden Age of Baseball featured at Fantagraphics Bookstore starting Saturday, 9/14

With baseball’s pennant races heating up and the postseason fast approaching, Fantagraphics Bookstore & Gallery looks back to an earlier era of the national pastime. Willard Mullin’s Golden Age of Baseball: Drawings 1934 – 1972 chronicles the game and its legendary players. The bookstore will display pages from the artist’s long career opening Saturday, September 14.

As America’s premier sports cartoonist, Willard Mullin documented the game of baseball in a more genteel era. He was in New York to record the careers of Babe Ruth, Joe DiMaggio, and Lou Gehrig. He witnessed Jackie Robinson’s historic integration of the game and the departure of the Dodgers and Giants to the west. In many significant ways, the game of baseball reflected the changes in mid-century American society, and Mullin’s delightful cartoons and caricatures captured the essence of the era with both humor and reverence. Fantagraphics' deluxe hardcover edition of Willard Mullin’s Golden Age of Baseball preserves the legacy of this American master for posterity.

The opening of the exhibit on Saturday, September 14 from 6:00 to 9:00 PM coincides with the colorful Georgetown Art Attack featuring visual and performing arts presentations throughout the historic arts community. Fantagraphics Bookstore & Gallery is located at 1201 S. Vale Street, minutes south of downtown Seattle. Open daily 11:30 to 8:00 PM, Sundays until 5:00 PM. Phone 206.658.0110.

Brian Ralph at the Fantagraphics Bookstore & Gallery!
Written by janice headley | Filed under Fantagraphics Bookstoreevents 5 Aug 2013 2:13 PM

On Saturday, September 7th, the Fantagraphics Bookstore & Gallery welcomes Drawn & Quarterly cartoonist Brian Ralph to celebrate the launch of the highly-anticipated Reggie-12, a hilarious pop-culture send-up of the infallible boy hero first presented in the seminal Asian culture magazine Giant Robot.  Join us from 6:00 to 8:00 PM as The Cave-In and Daybreak author presents a hilarious slide show with a signing to follow.

Reggie-12 is a young robot with endless enthusiasm. He lives with a bumbling sad-sack friend, a wise-cracking cat, and a well-meaning but forgetful inventor. Laughs explode from the page in this work, which reinterprets classic Japanese adventure manga through Brian Ralph's trademark style. Come along for a wild ride with Reggie-12, Casper, and Professor Tinkerton as they eat pizza, play video games, and get dissed by bad guys.

The Fantagraphics Bookstore & Gallery is located at 1201 S. Vale Street in Seattle's Georgetown district. Open daily 11:30 to 8:00 PM, Sundays until 5:00 PM. Phone: (206) 658-0110.

Our longtime friend Duff McKagan of Guns and Roses fame dropped by Fantagraphics Bookstore & Gallery on Thursday to pick up copies of Henry and Glenn Forever ahead of a national tour with his group Loaded. "Don't tell Henry," he implored. (Ooops.)
