Our exhibit of Dash Shaw's artwork launched at the Fantagraphics Bookstore & Gallery this past weekend, and boy, is it a beauty!

If you live in Seattle, you should definitely drop by and see his original artwork in person. I'm especially in love with the piece drawn on polka-dot fabric! If you live too far away, you can also check out photos on the Fantagraphics Flickr.

Dig your teeth into Relish: My Life in the Kitchen, the new graphic memoir from New York cartoonist Lucy Knisley, out now from our friends at First Second!

Larry had an advance copy behind the counter a few months ago, and I was instantly charmed by Lucy's stories of growing up as the daughter of "foodies."  Her love of food propels her around the world, finding the perfect croissants in France and addictive candy in Tokyo.

And perfectly enough, interspersed between these vignettes is recipes from Lucy herself!  A comic that helps promote healthy eating? Yes, it's true!

You can get a taste of Relish: My Life in the Kitchen this coming Friday, April 19th at the Fantagraphics Bookstore & Gallery as Lucy herself stops by for a slideshow and signing at 7:00 PM! And our own Chef Larry Reid will be whipping up some of the dishes from the book, which is something you won't want to miss in itself!

Fantagraphics Bookstore & Gallery is located at 1201 S. Vale Street in Seattle's Georgetown district. Open daily 11:30 to 8:00 PM, Sundays until 5:00 PM. Phone: (206) 658-0110.  Bon Appétit!

Lucy Knisley Presents Relish: My Life in the Kitchen at Fantagraphics Bookstore

April 11, 2013 - Seattle, WA. New York cartoonist Lucy Knisley will appear at Fantagraphics Bookstore & Gallery on Friday, April 19 at 7:00 PM to discuss her new graphic memoir Relish: My Life in the Kitchen.

As the daughter of a chef, the artist examines her life in the context of cooking, from casual childhood comfort food to exotic gourmet cuisine. Knisley's engaging narrative is interspersed with appealing recipes, resulting in readers working up quite an appetite. With that in mind, her slide talk will be followed by a tasting of some of the delicious offerings in the book: Sautéed mushrooms, pasta carbonara, chocolate chip cookies, and more. The perfect complement to a comic book about food!

Shaw is the creator of several highly regarded comix and graphic novels including Bottomless Belly Button in 2008. Sub Pop Rocks

Sub_Pop_All_Stars

A flock of rock stars descended on Fantagraphics Bookstore yesterday following a video shoot for the forthcoming Sub Pop Silver Jubilee celebrating 25 years of the storied Seattle record label. From left: producer and musician Jack Endino, Soundgarden guitarist Kim Thayil, brother TAD Doyle, and (former Fantagraphics staffer) Mudhoney front man Mark Arm.

Mark your calendars - and make hotel reservations - for Saturday, July 13 when Sub Pop presents 15 bands on two stages of free, all-ages entertainment right outside our bookstore. Inside the store, Fantagraphics curator Larry Reid is teaming with Sub Pop founder Bruce Pavitt for an exhibition focusing on the formative years of the Sub Pop phenomenon, including seminal works from cartoonists that would later become legends in their own right. This event also marks the world premiere of Danny Bland's highly anticipated first novel In Case We Die, from the world's greatest pop culture publisher. Time your summer vacation accordingly.

YourHeartBreaks

Join us this Saturday, March 23 from 4:00 to 8:00 PM for the 2nd annual Georgetown Music March. Just as the monthly Art Attack draws attention to the visual arts in Georgetown, the Music March features the many musicians that live, work, and play in the historic arts community. Over a dozen eclectic acts will perform all over the neighborhood. All shows are free and most venues are all ages.

Among the many highlights will be Clyde Petersen's Your Heart Breaks at Fantagraphics Bookstore, Blue Star Creeper on the Trailer Park Stage, Earl Brooks at Calamity Jane's, and Jack Endino's Rocket Surgery, featuring former Fantagraphics marketing assistant Allison Maryatt at the MIX. Come early for comix and stay late for another evening of raucous revelry in Georgetown.

We're Susceptible to Geneviève Castrée at the Fantagraphics Bookstore & Gallery!
Written by janice headley | Filed under Fantagraphics Bookstoreevents 14 Mar 2013 11:13 AM

Geneviève Castrée at the Fantagraphics Bookstore!

Thank you so much to everyone who came out this past weekend for our signing with the wonderful Geneviève Castrée, whose debut graphic novel Susceptible is out now from our friends at Drawn & Quarterly!

Geneviève Castrée at the Fantagraphics Bookstore

She gave a wonderful and spirited slideshow presentation, and at one point she had to don her husband's glasses in order to see the slides herself!  I learned so much from her talk that even though I was halfway through reading the book, when I got home, I started over again with all this new, fascinating information in mind!

Geneviève Castrée at the Fantagraphics Bookstore

And huge kudos to our manager/curator Larry Reid for going the extra mile in making the accompanying exhibition happen... no, literally. He drove many, many miles to Geneviève's home in Anacortes, WA, to pick up these original drawings from the book! Can you believe? These are in scale! Seeing the stunning artwork and the meticulous lettering in person, and at size (and in French!), was truly a special treat!

As she signed copies of the book for attendees, her good friend Ashley Eriksson (of K Records band LAKE) performed music.

Her opening track, she explained, was about working from home, which she said always made her think of Geneviève!  There was a very sweet vibe watching these two artists at their craft, smiling at each from across the room in equal admiration of each other's talents. Yes, aww! It was a very wonderful evening -- thank you to everyone who came out for it, and thank you especially to Geneviève, Ashley, and all Anacortesians for making the trek!

We're Susceptible to Geneviève Castrée at the Fantagraphics Bookstore & Gallery!

Our exhibit of original artwork from Susceptible will be on display through Saturday, April 6th at the Fantagraphics Bookstore & Gallery, located at 1201 S. Vale Street in Seattle's Georgetown district. Open daily 11:30 to 8:00 PM, Sundays until 5:00 PM. Phone: (206) 658-0110.  Live far away? You can check out more photos from our opening reception in the Fantagraphics Flickr!

** Yeah, You Know Me.

Not only am I thrilled when a new issue of Cometbus comes out, but I'm thrilled to find it on the shelves of our very own Fantagraphics Bookstore & Gallery!

Aaron's up to issue 55 now, wow, and this one boasts a most beautiful wraparound cover by our own Jordan Crane. "Pen Pals" is the story of Aaron and Yula, his Ukranian friend.  It's gorgeous, beautifully-written, and I can't believe it's only three stupid bucks.
