You're all invited to join a stellar group of accomplished cartoonists in the "Friends of the Nib Comics Jam" at Fantagraphics Bookstore & Gallery this Saturday, March 8 from 6:00 to 9:00 PM. Celebrated cartoonist and visual artist Jim Woodring will preside over the activities, which will include a guest appearance by New York underground comix legend Kim Deitch. Aspiring cartoonists of all ages are encouraged to participate in this lively session, which will include a rare screening of Deitch's 1960 short film "Dial M for Monster."
Friends of the Nib is an informal cartoonists' solon formed by Woodring that meets weekly at Café Racer in Seattle's Ravenna neighborhood. Acclaimed artists such as Ellen Forney, David Lasky and animator Bruce Bickford regularly attend to mentor emerging cartoonists and network with their peers. Kim Deitch is among America's most prominent and influential alternative cartoonists. The astonishingly sophisticated animated and live-action film short "Dial M for Monster" he created as a teenager with his friend Tony Eastman has become legendary among Deitch fans; it was never released, and has only been shown a handful of times in small venues. Prior to the 7:30 screening, he will introduce the film with a brief media presentation.

Georgetown Second Saturday Art Attack Continues with Spring Surge on March 8!
The inaugural “Georgetown Second Saturday Art Attack” in February attracted countless throngs of art enthusiasts to Seattle’s colorful and creative Georgetown community. This lively event continues on Second Saturday, March 8, from 6:00 to 9:00 PM. The list of participants has expanded to more than 30 galleries, studios, nightclubs, boutiques, and cafes. The public of all ages is invited to explore the singular appeal of this diverse industrial arts district.
Come dine, drink, shop and socialize in one of our region’s most entertaining and engaging cultural environments. Most participating businesses cater to all ages clientele and admission is free. Deitch's work has been featured in Art Spiegelman's RAW and R. Crumb'sWeirdo anthologies. In a recent review of Deitch's Shadowland graphic novel, New York Times book critic John Hodgman observed, "Few underground cartoonists deserve that subterranean title so fully as Kim Deitch. He was there at the beginning of the movement, drawing for The East Village Other in 1967, and his work retains much of that psychedelic, R. Crumb-like earthiness." In addition to Shadowland, Fantagraphics Books has collected Deitch's work in Beyond the Pale and published comic book series including The Stuff of Dreams, Mishkin File, and Waldo World.

Book Launch Party and Original Art Exhibition on Sat., Feb. 9, 2008.
Fantagraphics Books celebrates the publication of cartoonist Ellen Forney's provocative "LUST" collection with a book launch party and art exhibition befitting the romantic Valentine's Day occasion. This festive event takes place on Saturday, February 9 from 6:00 to 9:00 PM at Fantagraphics Bookstore & Gallery, located at 1201 S. Vale Street in Seattle's lively Georgetown district. The display of original art from the book continues through March 17, 2008.
"LUST: Kinky Online Personal Ads From Seattle's The Stranger" (Fantagraphics Books, Seattle, 2008) takes a peek at the alluring deviance revealed in the alternative weekly's "Lustlab" section. Each week for the past several years Forney has selected one ad to illustrate as a "Lustlab Ad of the Week" cartoon in both the print and online versions of the newspaper. "LUST" collects these images and includes fascinating interviews with several of the advertisers, with an introduction by Stranger editor Dan Savage. Forney recently illustrated "The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian" by Sherman Alexie, winner of the prestigious 2007 National Book Award for young people's literature. Alexie contributed the introduction to her wildly successful anthology "I Love Led Zeppelin" (Fantagraphics Books, Seattle, 2006). Forney is a regular contributor to The Stranger and other periodicals, and a highly regarded illustrator, painter and performance artist. She was chosen to participate in the Seattle P. I.'s 2007 Writers in Residence program.
The exhibition, opening Saturday, February 9, will include more than two dozen seductive selections from the book. Creative custom LUST chocolate Valentine novelties will be dispensed by sensuous hostesses to an exotic mix of love songs by DJ David James. Forney will present a short multimedia performance based on the book's contents. The "LUST" launch party coincides with the inaugural "Georgetown Second Saturday Art Attack." More than twenty-five galleries, studios, nightclubs, boutiques, and cafes will participate in this monthly showcase of Georgetown's creative diversity.
