"Cult" cartoonist Frank Stack is best known as the artist behind Harvey Pekar's award-winning graphic novel, My Cancer Year (his art was featured in the American Splendor film), and as the creator of the first underground comic book, The Adventures of Jesus. Foolbert Funnies collects comics—inspired by Stack's pop culture-filled childhood and travails as a fine arts professor—that ran in National Lampoon and other publications. (For decades, Stack's work was published under the pseudonym "Foolbert Sturgeon" to protect his career.) In Foolbert Funnies, you will find adventuress Dirty Diana; nostalgic time traveler Frank Crankcase; commonsensical Dr. Feelgood; politician Paddy Booshwah; "Southern Fried Homicide"; and a host of Amazons, artists, and pulp heroes, all depicted in Stack's scratchy, hatchy "crowquill" style. This "best of the rest" is a tribute to a Texan who's been quietly creating observational, iconoclastic art for more than forty years.

What we've got here for you is the final cover art for Foolbert Funnies: Histories and Other Fictions, a collection of work and tribute to underground cartoonist Frank Stack. Stack, who published his comics under the pseudonym Foolbert Sturgeon to avoid prosecution, created iconoclastic comics featuring such characters as Dirty Diana, Dr. Feelgood, and Paddy Booshwah.

Joyce Farmer and Frank Stack at San Diego Comic-Con 2011
Everyone adores Frank Stack! // seen here with Joyce Farmer, San Diego Comic-Con 2011

Good thing the Charlotte Street Foundation presents an exhibit on underground comix legend Frank Stack, titled: Good Thing I Used a Pseudonym: Work From a Three-Part Career: Frank Stack as Painter, Connoisseur, and Incognito as Graphic Novelist Foolbert Sturgeon.

PHEW! You gotta have a long title for an exhibit encapsulating Stack's five-decade-long career! Not to mention, this is the very first exhibit of Frank's that will include his traditional artwork made under his real name alongside the comix he created as "Foolbert Sturgeon." A very special exhibit, indeed!

The opening reception is this Friday, January 20th from 6:00 to 9:00 PM, and the exhibit will run through March 3, 2012.

And on Saturday, January 21st, join Frank Stack along with curators Anne Thompson and Nathan Boyer for a public discussion of his work at 2:30 PM.  Anyone who saw his panel at San Diego Comic-Con last year can tell you, you will not want to miss this as Frank is a delightful and brilliant storyteller!

It all goes down at Project Space [ 21 East 12th Street, Kansas City, MO ], a Charlotte Street Foundation Urban Culture Project venue.
