This week's comic shop shipment is slated to include the following new titles. Read on to see what comics-blog commentators and web-savvy comic shops are saying about them (more to be added as they appear), check out our previews at the links, and contact your local shop to confirm availability.

Fran
Fran

by Jim Woodring

104-page black & white 7.25" x 9.75" hardcover • $19.99
ISBN: 978-1-60699-661-4

"a simultaneous prequel *and* sequel to Jim Woodring's excellent Congress of the Animals from 2011, a book which seemed to shatter the cyclical exploits of the artist's "Frank" universe so as to provide an ending of sorts, though surely you want to know more about that nice friend Frank shacked himself up with for the denouement" –Joe McCulloch, The Comics Journal

Love and Rockets
Love and Rockets: New Stories #6

by Gilbert & Jaime Hernandez

100-page black & white 7.5" x 9.25" softcover • $14.99
ISBN: 978-1-60699-679-9

"In the 30 years they've been writing and drawing Love and Rockets, Los Bros Hernandez have created wonderfully complex story lines and characters... This web of superior magical-realistic storytelling involves readers in the perplexed yearnings of a huge cast of unforgettable characters unaware of their own capacity for general self-delusion and occasional self-discovery." –Publishers Weekly

"There are acclaimed filmmakers and novelists who can't do what Jaime Hernandez does - or Gilbert, for that matter. When the two of them are at their most inspired, as they are here, they make almost every other comics creator today look like a fumbling hack. [Grade] A" –The A.V. Club

Xmas on Bear Mountain
Walt Disney's Donald Duck: Christmas on Bear Mountain

by Carl Barks

216-page color 7.5" x 10.25" hardcover • $28.99
ISBN: 978-1-60699-697-3

"One of comics revered masters gets a fresh new reprinting worthy of his work and accessible to kids.... This volume finds [Barks] at a creative peak, combining the bold adventuring of Tintin with the wisely cynical view of human weakness of John Stanley.... Despite the dark undertones, the comic expressions and dialogue is still laugh-out-loud funny. A wonderful project that should put Barks's name in front of new generations of admirers." - Publishers Weekly (Starred Review)

The Complete Crumb Vol. 17
The Complete Crumb Comics Vol. 17: Cave Wimp (New Printing)
by Robert Crumb

136-page black & white/color 8.5" x 11" softcover • $19.99
ISBN: 978-1-60699-684-3

"The Complete Crumb series is especially useful in reminding us that Crumb has continued to evolve through the sixties. His more recent work is quieter and more literary... The most recent installment, collecting material originally published in Weirdo magazine, contains some of Crumb's best work." The National Post

Love and Rockets enters its fourth decade with this installment of its acclaimed graphic novel-format iteration, featuring both old friends and new faces, and some genuine surprises...

The cover shows Gilbert's new star Killer in a pose and milieu that will bring back memories for long-time fans — imitating the hammer-wielding Luba in her adopted Palomar. That’s because Killer has discovered that her great-grandmother Maria (Luba's mother) starred in a late 1950s crime movie, and begins to delve into the details of her family's twisted history. Complicating things is the fact that Luba's half-sister Fritz played Maria in an amped-up bio-pic version of her life, creating a postmodern alternate version of the classic "Poison River" which originally told Maria's story (in a tie-in release, see the graphic novel version of this movie, Maria M. Book One)! In the other half of the book, Jaime continues to explore his intriguing new character Tonta: In "Fuck Summer," Tonta is talked into joining the summer swim team but can't figure out why the brand new swim coach knows her — so, with help from friends, she sets out to find the answer. Meanwhile, something far more sinister is brewing behind the scenes...

This week's comic shop shipment is slated to include the following new titles. Read on to see what comics-blog commentators and web-savvy comic shops are saying about them (more to be added as they appear), check out our previews at the links, and contact your local shop to confirm availability.

Love and Rockets: The Covers
Love and Rockets: The Covers
by Gilbert, Jaime, and Mario Hernandez

144-page full-color 10.25" x 13.25" hardcover • $35.00
ISBN: 978-1-60699-598-3

"As you might expect, Love And Rockets: The Covers is very attractive, very well-put together, and the fact that the production values on display flatter the work inside gives you an idea of just how far ahead of the curve the Hernandez Brothers could work at times." -Tom Spurgeon, Comics Reporter

"Love and Rockets #1 is marvelous. I hope one day to attain the level of the cover drawing myself... it is a perfect drawing." - Moebius, 1982

Wandering Son Vol 5

Wandering Son (Hourou Musuko / 放浪息子) Vol. 5
by Shimura Takako

228-page black & white (with some color) 7" x 9.5" hardcover • $24.99
ISBN: 978-1-60699-647-8

"...what continues to make Wandering Son a fantastic read is the frankness it presents developmental sexual identity...Few comics will challenge you like Wandering Son. It covers a topic not widely written about or discussed, and does so in a tactful, warm, embracing manner." -Nick Rowe, Read Comic Books

"While most manga about cross-dressing involve lots of shrieking and embarrassment, Wandering Son takes a quieter, more introspective approach.... It's a very sweet manga with realistic characters - no dead parents or crazy teachers, just ordinary, loving families and supportive friends. This manga is a beautifully produced, hardcover book, and... it's worth every penny." - Brigid Alverson, MTV Geek

Heroic Tales

Heroic Tales: The Bill Everett Archives Vol. 2
by Bill Everett; edited by Blake Bell

248-page full-color 7.25" x 10" hardcover • $39.99
ISBN: 978-1-60699-600-3"

"For fans of comics from the dawn of the comic book era, this book is an indispensable gift from Blake Bell and Fantagraphics." - Jason Sacks, Comics Bulletin

"What's exciting for me about this book is watching Everett develop as an artist and storyteller and figure out the medium in relatively rapid fashion.... What you see here are the glimmers of an artist struggling to comprehend the potential of this relatively new medium [and] how he can push it to match his own interests." - Chris Mautner, Robot 6

Five women stand in a police lineup; four of them are garishly dressed super-women — perfectly normal, because this is, after all, the cover of a comic book. A closer look, however, reveals a fifth woman who seems thoroughly out of place — mousy, in a bathrobe and curlers, smoking a cigarette. Surely she's here by mistake — or is she?

From this very first cover of the very first issue of Love and Rockets in 1982, Gilbert and Jaime Hernandez (along with their brother, Mario) have created artwork that has subverted, contradicted and celebrated the history of comics while making it their own.

For the first time, these iconic comic book covers from the original Love and Rockets comic book series (and the earliest trade paperbacks) have been restored and collected.

This is a gorgeous, oversized art book and the perfect gift for fans of the series that virtually defines alternative comics.
